"Flu" is a particular set of symptoms caused by a viral infection, such as fever, muscle aches, cough, ... ...

    Data will tell the tale.

Just out is that African Americans appear to be more at risk as a group. Dr. Ben Carson was asked about this on Fox News just now. His thought is that African Americans are afflicted with hypertension at a greater rate. That is one of the listed preconditions and a good example of the granularity of data alerting at risk persons who might not be aware.

Actually, I was thinking about that this morning and it made me so ****ing mad, I devised a plan and sent it to the Governor of Ohio per Email, namely, that the police should show up at the church doors of such gatherings and as people are walking out, stamp their wrists with a large C in purple indelible ink that doesn't wash out for at least six weeks. And then, when anyone of them show up at a hospital because they are sick as dogs and dying of COVID-19, they should be sent to the back of the line and only be treated if they bring enough PPE for all of the attending personnel because by G-d, they could have avoided all of this bullshit in the first place.

They want their free choice to be stupid as loons and get infected? Well, ok. I can't stop them from being stupid, irresponsible loons.

But then, doctors, nurses, EMTs and the like should have the freedom of choice whether or not to treat such disease-grifters to begin with.

    And therein lies your problem.

The "Flu" is not a "set of symptoms." It is a term which is a shortened version of Influenza and Influenza is caused a specific type of virus, from which the Coronavirus is wholly distinct.

Sorry to hear that. We have friends who were on the Zanndam. They are fortunately fine and back in California.

If you can't find a single person that agrees with you and yet you claim that you are still correct, then you are explicitly endorsing the theory that you alone understand math and the study of pandemics.

    It's ****ing useless.

You have the exact numbers of flu deaths and the estimated numbers of flu deaths of the UK, you have the exact numbers of flu deaths and the estimated numbers of flu deaths in Germany. The CDC uses similar statistical methods like the UK and Germany and you can compare the estimated flu deaths in the US according to the exact numbers in other countries. So, yes, the estimated US flu deaths numbers cannot be used to compare them with exact corona death numbers.

New Jersey's governor, during today's briefing, issued an order to close all state and county parks in the state (too many people gathering in parks and not social distancing). He's leaving the decision for municipal parks up to the city which runs the municipality.

The US estimate for the 2017 - 2018 flu season is 80,000 flu deaths. What do you estimate the real death number is ???

No, your problem is that you don't understand philosophy. Your problem is that you can only look to Wikipedia or some other "holy source" to "do your thinking FOR you" instead of being a free thinker.

You are attempting to call a specific virus family (orthomyxovirus) "flu" even though it already has a name. How do you define "common cold" then? Is that limited only to rhinovirus? ;)

Truth is, "common cold" can be caused by various virus families, including coronavirus, rhinovirus, RSV, HPIV, orthomyxovirus, and other unidentified viruses). Likewise, "flu" can be caused by various virus families, including coronavirus, orthomyxovirus, etc... It makes much more sense, to me anyway, to think of "flu" and "common cold" as a specific set of symptoms rather than as a specific virus family, which already has a name (rhinovirus, coronavirus, etc).

Plenty of people agree with me. Plenty of others do not agree with me. Who cares... That has no bearing on the reasoning behind the arguments themselves.

I believe that I am correct, yes.

No I'm not. I've made no such claim.

    That's not very nice.

This particular coronavirus jumped from animal hosts to humans. That makes it particularly rare and unpredictable. Previous SARS/MERS viruses burned themselves out. This one is more intelligent and contagious...making it more deadly. Last Sunday, a lion at the Bronx Zoo was diagnosed with this SARS-Covid-2 virus. It had jumped from the human zookeeper to the lion.

Humans get human coronaviruses. Animals get animal coronaviruses, specific to species. Common viruses do not jump species. This is a species-hopping SARS virus, not the flu or a cold.

The governments of the world are not shutting down activities and economies just for giggles.

The fairly new Minnesota Department of Health & University of Minnesota model shows 50 - 55K death in the next 12 months. However that may be the prediction for Minnesota only and not a national estimate.

Prove it. Find a single person who believes you can find the mortality or the infection rate in the manner that you did.

So, the USA has now posted over +1,500 COVID-19 deaths today, it could get closer to 2,000.

And there are still 3 hours left in my day and 9 to 12 hours left in this day in the USA....

Until we have more and better data the statistic based on population is the most stable. When the appropriate data is available the mortality rates based on infection rates can be calculated.

Why are you going ballistic over a difference of opinion ??

The 2019-2020 Coronavirus final death tally will not be published until 2021. We have people who died in Jan/Feb/March not counted, and who knows how many people dying where tests are not available to confirm that the person was infected with Coronavirus. Since the government is telling people to stay home and self-quarantine unless they are really very sick, people may be dying at home from the virus and not counted in the current count.

    https://www.newsmax.com/us/coronavirus-cdc-death-count/2020/04/06/id/961591/

"The federal government estimates it will not be able to produce a final tally of coronavirus deaths until 2021. Coronavirus will be in an annual report that outlines the country’s leading causes of death."
