I'm sorry the OP feels that way. I know it may seem like people don't want you around because of politics, but you are valued in of yourself.

I don't know who "them" and "he" is in the above spiel. But Trump has given them as little as he can get away with.

Of course! Cuomo also said that he'd praise Trump as if he were a demi-god if that helped him get a single piece of equipment that would save even one life.

Trump is the President. He has decided to use his power to gain any sort of leverage.... praise... or anything that he thinks will help him in the elections. You still don't understand that that means he has a gun to the head of the governors. And he's willing to use it because his goal is not to save any lives. It's to get himself reelected.

But I don't. I'm designated as an essential worker and therefore, I have to leave the house often. So people who are stupid enough to not heed what experts tell them can kill me.

Old people are free to cordon themselves off as long as they want to.

Most of them are retired and do not need to go to work.

Plus, I find it outrageous that you, Golem are complaining about conservatives, when we all know that even if the virus was completely eliminated in this country, it only takes one person (such as an illegal alien sneaking across the border) to bring it back in, and start the pandemic all over again.

It just might be retirement age is now the best we can hope for, old age may be a thing from the past, unless one takes extraordinary measures to protect themselves.

Politicians are optimistic but the scientists are not convinced an effective vaccine will ever be available. This virus, just like the common cold coronavirus, may be with us for a very very long time.

WTF? I know right wingers don't understand how this pandemic works. But do they at least understand how the world works?

Old people can't cordon themselves off! They need lots of help. Medical workers. Assisted living. Often people who get their groceries and medications or clean their homes.

And look... defending older people should not be a partisan issue. Remember: they represent the large majority of Trump's base. And Trump and the ignorance he exudes is killing them!

But here we are. Liberals defending the life of the demographics that, in a majority, would vote for Trump. And right wingers promoting actions that would kill them.

    Ironic!

I know. Trump might pass a policy saying doctors don't have to treat me if they don't like me. If I get sick, I don't know if I could go to the hospital. Not because I know I wouldn't be treated, but because I don't think I could handle someone saying it would be better if I was dead.

Who was the one that sent those infected people into that nursing home? (see here)

Risk is very low, going to get groceries once a week.

I think you are making a big stretch to say that (at least for the majority) old people can't stay in their homes if they want to.

Very densely populated cities like NYC are free to come up with whatever sort of specific policies they want, however.

Many old people do become sick and die in hospitals, but that has been an issue going on for a long time.
I think there was some study years ago that more old people die from diseases they catch in hospitals than the total number of gun homicides in the country.

When they say you can come outside when it's safe again what they mean is you're not coming back out for years, and you're going to be broke, homeless, hungry, and dirty in need of a shower.

Old age sends them to a nursing home. There is a nursing home right across my backyard. There have been several deaths there. There are six nursing homes in the city where I live. 60% of deaths in my county have occurred in nursing homes. 95% of those dead in my zip code are over 70

It is right now. But not if some idiots out there get their way and reopen the state.

I see. So it's only the ones who can't that you don't mind seeing dead.

Keep in mind that the majority of them are Trump supporters. And I only mention this because, since logic and rational thought doesn't get to you... .maybe political partisanship might.

Not every old person is in a nursing home. For those that are, quality of life is not that good, and they often don't have that many years of life left anyway.

I have an uncle, 93 years old, and he can still walk around pretty much just fine, he lives alone, doesn't have anyone take care of him, although his family checks on him to make sure he's still okay once a week.

Those that have to go to a nursing home typically already have some serious health condition, or mental decline. Despite what some people think, it's not the "normal" for old people to go to nursing homes.

More than once, I've heard an old person say if they ever become permanently bedridden, or lose all cognitive sense of what's going on around them, to please just pull the plug.

Long enough to vote for Trump, unless he and his blind followers get them killed. You have no soul.

How many people are going to be pushed to suicide because of economic factors because the economy is not opening up?

We also have to think of middle aged people.

A 10% increase in the suicide rate would still likely end up meaning more deaths than the number actually dying from Covid-19.

How many normally give into despair because economic opportunities where they live haven't opened up in years?

Why do I have a strange feeling everything needs to be shut down just long enough until the next presidential election?

You'd have to ask all those people in the depressed Rust Belt area who voted for Trump, hoping that a change in trade policies could reverse all that outsourcing of manufacturing that has taken place over the years.

I did, they're drinking themselves to death, smuggling drugs, and having heart attacks because they're so lonely. Those that have succeed are few and far between, and most are caught surviving off of government welfare, like raccoons in your trash.

Yes, loneliness is one of the contributing causes of suicide.
Keeping everything shut down for so long isn't helping with that.

Thank you for sharing. Discrimination against anyone is Evil -- for their gender orientation, Autism, or age.

Many Conservatives have anti-Humane ideas. Many Liberals have other inhumane ideas -- Presumption of Guilt, Censorship, Reverse Discrimination.

I am neither Liberal nor Conservative.

There would most likely be discrimination under a socialized National Health system, based on perceived quality of life and underlying health factors. We can already see this in countries like the UK. People who are smokers get bumped down and given lower priority on the list for organ transplants, and knee surgeries are delayed or even denied for older aged, because it's expected they won't live long enough to get the full benefit, or are likely to just become bedridden anyway.
