Homemade masks CAN be made such that they are effective:

There are various organizations that have carried out tests on various fabrics and combinations of fabrics. I've seen sites where fabrics are rated for COVID effectiveness.

    https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/ar...-masks#How-well-the-mask-fits-is-also-crucial

Also, the central idea is too protect others as the main idea is to stop your particles. Masks work way better when everyone wears them. Since there is at least 2 weeks of communicable infection before symptoms, you and those near you may be spreading the disease without even knowing it.

When the nation is on the grip of a global pandemic... the opposite is true

Yup, so the whole "six feet apart" thing is quite stupid, ain't it?

For the most part... Not completely. But even so, viruses spread in many ways other than sneezing/coughing.

Masks and gloves don't stop viruses. Plain and simple.

So you're denying immunology now, along with the method by which ICUs sterilize their equipment?? Interesting...

Hospital staff and first responders and care givers, are still short of N95 masks.

Competing with them for masks just exacerbates the problem for those who are being exposed on a continuing basis.

These people are dying at a disproportionate rate by working to keep us well.

I do not believe they need more competition.

It's six feet apart while wearing a mask.

But they can effectively limit the spread of viruses when used appropriately. Why do you think ICU nurses wear PPE?

    Plain and simple.

With respect, I don't think you do see the point. We have no real way of knowing who is compromised, so can't possibly make that a factor in our behaviour. Even if you quarantined every person over 40 who is overweight, or smokes, or drinks, or doesn't get enough exercise (and all of these are at risk, if not of death then of a long battle and potential permanent damage), you'd still have no way of knowing if that thin, fit, 30 year old you just breathed on is not going to then breath on someone who is at risk.

There's no getting around it unfortunately .. it's on every one of us to do the right thing, irregardless of our comfort.

As a nurse, I agree. I hope that you could detect a bit of sarcasm in my post.

The best thing Average Joe can do right now is just stay TF at home.

In this case, it is acting as if wearing a mask and social distancing gives you moral superiority over those who don't.

    ~500nm, give or take.

Yes, spittle flies around. It hasn't bothered you for your whole life up until you were now told to freak out about it.

Much of that spittle gets contained within the mask. That still does not contain a virus.

True. Only when you go to indoor public places, or crowded outdoor public places.

That's the point of wearing a mask, to keep YOUR spittle on YOUR face.

Do you wear goggles? Is it not stupid for "society's most vulnerable" to not Quarantine? What is the percentage of "society's most vulnerable? Would it not be more reasonable for that percentage to quarantine?
You still sound judgmental with an air of moral superiority when you call others stupid.

Medical science calls for wearing masks, serious hand washing and 6 feet of separation for the general pubic.

Would greater separation be better? Maybe, but there are limits to what is possible given our designs for places people go and how they get there.

    No corporations... just science.

Do ICUs use UV light to sterilize their equipment, or do they stand 6ft apart from it, put a mask on it, put gloves on it, close down the economy around it, etc...???

Too much bother, so you're just going to give up? Lie down and take your fate?

    Nice.

I hope you know that the virus has not got a brain to figure out how to escape out of the mask so perhaps you could explain how the virus is not contained. The virus is effectively a blob of fat easily absorbed by masks

Thanks for posting! They'll still argue, though. They'll claim magical good luck pixies intervened on behalf of all of those 'lucky' countries, and it had nothing to do with lockdowns and/or masks.

They don't wear masks to stop viruses.

No it doesn't. Viruses are smaller than N95 specs.

IMHO anyone that is at risk personaly knows they are (unless to proud to admit it) I have three very good friends right now that are extreme risks due to transplants. The China Virus is in no way gonna find them! I know others that are so obese they need knee operations yet they cannot admit why. I say let 'em risk it.

Have you actually referenced any of those things because I have a healthcare qualification and from what I have read it looks less like academic level critique and more like “making **** up’

The idea of allowing unchecked pandemic and letting our already strapped hospitals try to handle that is absolutely not acceptable.

And, it can't be claimed to be an economic stimulus.

    :roflol::roflol::roflol:

Now I would concede a point if it were not for the fact that N95 masks are designed to protect healthcare workers from virus infections and have been used in the healthcare system for years

Oh! And when you provide references for your claims I will also do so

I am not wasting my time on people who will not read the science
