Bet the guy with a weapon will think twice before getting into an unnecessary confrontation with people when carrying. If you wouldn't go there unarmed, don't go there armed.

The job of protecting public property belongs to the police, not armed citizens. He should not have mixed it up with the types trashing statues when he was armed.

 

Watched the video. Seems to me that the shooting is self defense. Not condoning Bacas actions of tossing the woman from behind to the ground. That could be a prosecutable offense. But he was basically retreating and the mob was chasing him and I heard “gonna ****ing kill you” at least twice. Baca was retreating. They kept pursuing and attacking with stated intent to kill. Weapon or not, the shoot itself was self defense. Just because he attacked somebody prior doesn’t give the mob the right to kill him. That is beyond escalating.

His actions of throwing the woman to the ground prior however should get him some punishment.

I'll re-watch this on a pc where I can see and control it better. Either way, I don't think that would change anything. The mob was still aggressively attacking Baca as he continued to retreat, and the gun was drawn for quite a while as a warning. While I still think the shooting in and of itself will be considered self defense, there are certainly other laws broken - throwing that woman to the ground from behind for starters. Not even sure if he was carrying legally or not.

 

He did not have a license for concealed carry. I don't know if he could legally carry

 

Chicago is one of the hardest cities in the US to obtain a fire arm. They pride themselves on the strictest gun laws...

Having an unlicensed firearm in your possession should get you years in prison. Their gun laws don't work because there isn't effective punishment for their use in committing crimes and in having them in your possession.

There were multiple knives at the scene:

The video was too grainy for me to make out if one of those knives was in Scott Williams' hand when he was shot, but I also don't think it's terribly relevant to the legal question of whether the shooting was justified self defense or not. The mob and skateboard attack provided more than enough justification for the self-defense shooting. I think the DA realizes this, which is why he's dropped the charges related to the shooting (and is looking for other crimes to hang Mr. Baca for).
