Yes even the Spanish flu went away and this is definitely no Spanish flu but people choose to treat it as such.

You are aware that you will die of something some day likely cancer or more likely CVD but it’s very unlikely to be this virus.

Obsession with safety is the opposite of thriving.

    I choose to thrive.

Yes c-19 may kill millions of people or it may go away on it’s own as exposure increases all over the world. Had nothing been done that exposure would likely have happened by now. The fact is that we cannot prepare for every contingency. As for taking one’s shoes off in airports this was the result of one man’s actions and was done after the fact. What’s odd is that he was flying TO the US from Europe and I’ve never been asked to remove my shoes at any European airport when returning to the US. As for masks and their efficacy, this from medicinenet helps to explain a few things:

Can wearing a face mask protect you from the coronavirus (COVID-19)?

Face masks can play a role in preventing the infection, but that role is limited. A healthy individual in a normal situation does not need to wear a mask, as per CDC recommendations. A face mask is not the ideal solution for protection from the new coronavirus for the following reasons:

    • A surgical mask does not fit tightly over the nose and mouth.
    • It is not possible to prevent airborne virus infection.
    • It is difficult to keep a mask on for long periods of time.
    • When you touch the mask, you lose the protection and must replace the mask, and dispose of it safely.
A surgical face mask is highly recommended for people who have the coronavirus infection or have a high risk of exposure. It offers a certain amount of protection against infection from your own hands or droplets from the cough or sneeze of an infected person. You should wear a face mask if

    • you are infected and sick with the virus,
    • you are caring for a person infected with the virus,
    • you are a health worker, or
    • you are in contact with infected people for any other reason.
It is essential that caregivers dispose of the mask after every interaction and use a new one any time they are in close confines with an infected person.

People who care for infected people in a medical setting wear an N95 respirator, a mask with a special air filter designed to protect one from tiny airborne particles.

These masks are designed to fit a person's face and are usually rounded in shape. Medical personnel receive special training to fit them properly so they do not breathe around the edges of the mask and defeat its purpose.

These N95 masks are not recommended for the general public.

Derek Stonebarger, owner of ReBar, a bar that doubles as an antique store in the Las Vegas Arts District, was just starting to get back on his feet when Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak ordered bars to once again close.

“It's a scary time to be a small business owner. It's a scary time to have your American dream literally ripped from you,” Stonebarger said.

Less than two months after reopening businesses and the iconic Las Vegas Strip, a rise in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations prompted Gov. Sisolak to scale back the state’s reopening plan.

If the bars are to close, they close. That's all there is to it. COVID-19 is on the rise and that's the reason

I can’t help but notice that virtually nothing is getting shut down again as virus cases continue to increase. This is of course because the lockdown politicians began to notice that it was severely impacting tax revenue which pays their paychecks.

Now it’s all about face masks. And their efficacy is questionable.

So we move from one placebo to another.

But we moved from climate related human extinction to this “crisis” pretty quickly.

I’m not sure if this is evidence of societal ADD or if we truly enjoy just terrifying ourselves. When this virus thing is over I imagine there will have to be another terror.

    And this is worth repeating:

The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins.

When millions of jobs are lost forever because small businesses could not weather prolonged forced shutdowns and when I hear about third world people saying they are more concerned about starvation because they are day laborers and are not allowed to work. Then yes I care. There is absolutely no evidence that the lockdowns saved enough lives (or even any) to justify the destructive consequences. These are the highest unemployment numbers since the Great Depression and we did it to ourselves.

I’m nearly seventy. If I catch the virus I may well die but if not will most likely suffer other unpleasant complications of the virus.

My father died of cancer. A year of complete misery.
That is what I am much more afraid of. Two others in my life died this way also miserably. Then there were the others in my life who died of heart disease. These are the things Westerners don’t seem to worry much about.

Yet we are dismissive of the more than 6 million who have starved to death just this year and of other communicable diseases or malaria or so many other things in favor of the drama of this virus.

We’ve given trillions to the service of c-19 with far fewer casualties.
    Where have you been?

    No. Actually we haven't.
We have given trillions to lessen the impact, but not a lot to actually solving the problem.

US President Donald Trump has vowed not to order Americans to wear masks to contain the spread of coronavirus.

His comments came after the country's top infectious disease expert, Dr Anthony Fauci, urged state and local leaders to be "as forceful as possible" in getting people to wear masks.

Wearing face coverings, Dr Fauci added, is "really important" and "we should be using them, everyone".

The wearing of face coverings has become highly politicised in the US.

The majority of state governors have now ordered that the wearing of masks outdoors be mandatory, rather than a personal choice. Among them are Republican governors, including Kay Ivey of Alabama, who have reversed their initial opposition to the mandates.
That we have when we have those that don't want to go by the rules. There are those that don't care if they die, they want to live for the moment and that's all. As we all know, this coronavirus won't go away tomorrow. It will be with possibly through the middle of next year or longer, who knows? I know you and I are concerned about this and we'll to wait and see what happens next.

How much has been given to alleviate malaria or starvation or other communicable diseases or HIV which claim far fewer lives. What economy has shut down because of these things?

No one can be totally safe.
Embrace life and take your chances at every gambling table.
Your odds of surviving this virus are greater than every time you drive your automobile.
Life is short, don’t make it miserable by hiding from every threat no matter how small or media driven!

I think you're right when there isn't anyone is totally safe and this pandemic can go up and/or down as we've seen in the past months. Anyone can get it at any time and we don't know where it's going to hit next. We've got to keep a close watch on ourselves and those around us. It can get better and it can get worse. as I say it can go either way. We'll have to wait and see what happens from here and what happens today, tomorrow, next week, next month, next year, and beyond. There's no telling what will happen. We'll have to keep a close watch on it. I'm pleased that you are concerned like me and everyone else that care what goes on with this and thank you.

There are just too many things to worry about to focus on just this one but I agree seniors need to be especially protected.

It is said that these are lifestyle diseases.
It’s sad that your fathers dying was so awful.

My dad died of prostate cancer. My aunt died of pancreatic cancer and my ex father in law died of melanoma. Hardly lifestyle choices.

5 others in my family died of CVD.

Cancer and heart disease are my enemies.

This virus is a distraction from the real killers to me!
