Apparently Trump is holding COVID aid hostage for his #1 priority, defunding social security.

Sounds like a real nice plan to get Biden elected, I mean, not exactly a good way to win friends and influence people, especially if they are senior citizens.

Go for it Trump, can't wait to see what the Lincoln Project does with this.

    https://socialsecurityworks.org/202...-for-his-1-priority-defunding-social-security

(Washington, DC) — The following is a statement from Nancy Altman, President of Social Security Works, in response to Donald Trump demanding that the next coronavirus relief package include a cut in the payroll tax, Social Security’s dedicated revenue:
“The coronavirus pandemic is raging across America. Essential workers are in desperate need of tests and personal protective equipment (PPE). Millions of Americans are at risk of eviction. Over 57,000 nursing home residents and workers are dead. Hospitals are in danger of becoming overwhelmed.

Donald Trump is doing nothing to address any of this. Instead, he’s stated his intentions to hold any Congressional relief package hostage for his top priority: Defunding Social Security by starving it of its dedicated revenue.

Your Whois search proves nothing. Proxying addressess on whois searches on websites is a common practice. You'd be dumb not to do it in this age of crazy people.

She gives her full name & contact email address in the link, if you took a moment to read it.

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
    Thursday, July 16, 2020
    Contact: Linda Benesch, lbenesch@socialsecurityworks.org

Your ad hominem comment is meaningless, and, as such, is incompetent. Moreover, the reportage is factual:

    https://www.cnbc.com/2020/05/04/trump-wants-a-payroll-tax-cut-why-some-say-its-a-terrible-idea.html

You failed to refute the OP. See my sig:

Incompetent rebuttals are non arguments, especially those which contain vacuous (unsubstantiated) declarations, rebuttals rife with weasel words ( improper use of generalities ) ad hominems, loaded phrases, egregious logical fallacies and misuse of logic terms, off topic, off point, (includes 'kill the messenger" tactics which are highly debatable [unless the messenger is a well-established unreliable source; a CTer, etc.] ), flaming, and otherwise disingenuous remarks, childish and simplistic thinking, including, but not limited to, comments of self puffery and all it's variants (such as shaming, trivializing opponent's argument, mockery) etc.. If overdone, likely to be ignored.

Professor Peabody claimed 'anonymous', but the link reveals she gave her full name and contact email address, and the reportage is factual, Trump does want to kill the payroll tax, which is the primary source of funding for social security.

the rest of his comment was a gratuitous ad hominem

I thought it was something like that, but it's not even 5AM here, and I was too lazy to do more.

Basically, you can assume anything from the Right is fiction now, unless proven otherwise. I like to do documentation, mostly because the Mods won't let me describe the comments and commenters accurately..

Don't worry. After the liberals de-fund the police they'll be no one left to get Social Security.

Politicians have been defunding SS on the back end long before Trump. I know the intention was to stir up panic, but getting rid of SS is a good idea. Its a bad deal.

Memes are great. Why think for ones self when it has already been done for you. SS was a great idea and served its purpose. We can do much better.

That's because they added general revenue transfers into SS to make up for the loss.

Other way around, If there were actually SS trust fund properly invested, it would have more than enough money. The congress has raided it since its inception.

Which has nothing to do with your original point and my counter point.

Not what he said or I said. He said Obama/Biden's stimulus had a payroll tax cut and nobody complained. The counterpoint is that they added general revenue transfers to make up the loss.

The validity if the program or the health of the funding level are immaterial to the point at hand.

The payroll tax SHOULD be killed. What should replace it is government mandated retirement savings, with rules similar to today's Social Security, except ownership of the funds never transfers from Taxpayer to Government, it's an asset that can be willed to children (or whomever) in the event that after a lifetime of paying, the intended recipient dies 24 hours short of when they would start drawing money out resulting in Uncle keeping it all. They can set the rules about what investments are allowable, when people can begin to draw, etc.. Perhaps Uncle can backstop Disability claims, or maybe we get some actual private insurance policies that work the same.

There would have to be 3 categories of people for the next few decades, though. Younger folks for whom it takes effect immediately, older folks who remain on the existing rules, and in betweeners. I'll let people smarter than me figure out where those cutoffs should be and how best to handle the in betweeners. Once all the older folks and in betweeners are deceased, and everybody still alive has been on the new rules their whole (or vast majority) of their adult lives, moving forward those categories would be completely unnecessary.

It would be a slow motion solution, but would solve most if not all of SS's problems, except for Uncle stealing people's lifetime savings. That's their problem.

Well now, that is a drastically left wing distorting the way of looking at things. President looking to help businesses and left wingers create a conspiracy about Social Security. Wow, now that is wack. Nobody mentioned anything about Social Security or funding it except some wacko left wing conspiracist.
