Carbon Tax Good / Bad Idea Inspired by https://www.yahoo.com/finance/news/trudeau-hikes-carbon-tax-positions-183915766.html Trudeau Hikes Carbon Tax in Bid to Reach 2030 Climate GoalTheophilos Argitis Fri, December 11, 2020, 3:50 PM PST (Bloomberg) -- Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stepped up efforts to hit Canada’s emissions targets by 2030, pledging billions in new money to combat climate change and increasing his government’s carbon tax. The measures, announced Friday in Ottawa by Trudeau and Environment Minister Jonathan Wilkinson, seek to put the resource-rich northern nation on track to cut greenhouse-gas emissions by as much as 40% below 2005 levels by the end of this decade, versus the current 30% goal. Central to achieving that will be an increase in the government’s carbon price to C$170 ($133) per metric ton by 2030. It was already on track to hit C$50 two years from now, and will increase by C$15 a year after that. Though revenue from the levy is returned to the provinces via consumer rebates, it’s being challenged in the courts by oil-producing Alberta and others. . . Is the carbon tax a good idea? A bad idea? And why. Moi Across an immense, unguarded, ethereal border, Canadians, cool and unsympathetic, regard our America with envious eyes and slowly and surely draw their plans against us.
A 'carbon tax' is just another hyperliberal Leftist scam to force people to pay billions of dollars to some bunch of internationalist 'enforcers', based on the completely WRONG assumption that the world is at death's door because of carbon dioxide! I've posted this many time during the past few years, but here it goes again -- CARBON DIOXIDE MAKES UP 0.04% OF THE EARTH'S ATMOSPHERE! BUT, if CO2 is indeed a major contributor to air pollution throughout the planet -- as it certainly is in INDIA and CHINA, then, INDIA and CHINA should clean up their own damned 'carbon dioxide' problem, not tax-paying citizens of the United States! Long ago, we did have substantial problems with smog and air pollution in the U. S., but starting in the 1970's we mounted huge efforts to clean it up, and now, almost fifty years later, WE'VE been very successful! Based on 2017 data:
Ultimately the planet is going to change by itself regardless of what we do. It's kind of this thing it does. Any belief that you can stop that is completely moronic. "Well we can slow it down" says the left which is probably the most irresponsible thing to do. Their belief that avoiding this issue and letting a future generation worry about shows you just how self serving they actually are. Right now we have time to get ready for the climate change that is going to happen and we should be moving cities back from the coast, building new waterways to accommodate the new floods we will have, investing in technology to create crops we use in a different environment but you never hear this from the left. There really is no excuse for their behavior.
The hyperliberal Left likes to try to tyrannize anyone and anything it can with its Loonie Tunes, half-baked 'science'. They can't inflict their agenda on volcanoes, the sun, and the Earth's core, so, they inflict it on ignorant, gullible people instead.... And you'd have to be an exceptionally ignorant and gullible American to think that allowing some bunch of Leftist 'overlords' to tax YOU unmercifully is going to ameliorate the horrible smog problems in India and China. . "Hey, America, it's YOUR fault that that New Delhi is so fugged up!"
Funny... I looked your list of countries over and over and never did see the two biggest polluters in the ENTIRE WORLD on it: INDIA, and, CHINA.... Until or unless they are, this whole 'carbon tax' gambit is nothing but manipulative nonsense!
Anything to do with global warming is designed to lead to government controls over the people. Scientifically it's a fraud, and the people pushing know it - just goes to show how gullible the rank and file on the left are. Unfortunately, their authoritarian agenda is pressing ahead and making progress. We're eventually going to have stop them one way or another.
Personally, Anything we can do within reason to curb our addiction to non renewable energy is a good thing. Personally, I would like to see nuclear expanded as a good stop gap until we have the battery technology to store more amounts of wind / solar. Stop burning coal and oil.
We need more coal and nuclear plants contributing to the grid. What Obama and his merry band of zealots did to the coal industry was nothing short of criminal. Wind and solar aren't needed at all.
This is the kind of nonsense the left uses to deceive the public and drain the public treasury. https://justthenews.com/accountabil...re-500-million-solar-power-plant-never-became This one was about as expensive as the Solyndra scam. Solyndra was a scam from the get-go with Obama donors walking away with hundreds of millions. Lots of money to be stolen out of the public treasury if you're connected and claim you're all about "going green".
@Turin @wist43 Remember: Nuclear It only takes one oopsyAnd the true clean up takes tens of thousands of years depending on the half life of poisons I would like to see more small scale production such as, no naked roof tops. Small residential wind. Solar roads and building surfaces. Residential solar water hydrolysis harvesting the H2. Store and run through fuel cells as needed. We tend to concentrate, centralize production when we could lessen the central production burden. Electric Company. Rent my roof. Don't wait for me to buy and service the panels. ttfn
Trudeaux should perhaps have learned from precedent established by France's Macron, but is instead going forward with the global elites' plan to tax the working and middle-class of western countries out of their independence to make for a more subservient global citizenry. When Macron instituted carbon tax policies, the rural people who could not afford to live in expensive cities but who did need employment opportunities in those cities felt the economic pinch at the gasoline station and at home with their electric billings. The Yellow Vest protests were initially a grassroots counter effort to protest the fact that carbon taxes get passed down to the end consumers of energy products, thus harming the poor the most. The protests were quickly used by other political activist groups to take advantage of the media spotlight which the original protesters drew, but not before Macron backed down a bit and reversed some of the tax hikes. Is Trudeaux prepared for the coming protests, or does Canada not have many rural people who need to drive to city jobs in order to put food on their tables? It is very apparent that all of the globalist programs for higher taxation do no damage to the elites, but are tragically devastating to the millions of people struggling to make ends meet. They should just stop lying that such programs are for the good of humanity and instead just be honest that the design is to force as many people as possible into total government dependence.
I chuckle when I think about half-witted hyperliberals freezing in the dark because they're too broke to pay their new 'carbon taxes'. But, if they are successful in keeping radical Democrats power, they'll probably get barely enough additional welfare handouts to keep from dying in the cold, pitiless winter nights. While you shiver in your homeless camps, remember that CARBON DIOXIDE MAKES UP 0.04% OF THE EARTH'S ATMOSPHERE....
I chuckle at yet another "conservative" who can't remember 15 years of history. BTW, I am opposed to the carbon tax and similar programs in any form. What it says is that if you have enough money, pollute to your heart's content. My preference is to stop polluting and if you can't stop polluting, shut down.
I agree, Dado! If I had my way (which I never do), I'd spend every penny of R&D money on hydrogen fusion energy-producing plants (no pollution, endless cheap energy)! But you're forgetting that the huge polluters are INDIA and CHINA -- not the U. S. since the 1970's! The hyperliberal Left wants to shackle you and me to 'carbon taxes', but you can bet your last dime that nobody (NOBODY) is going to force Xi Jinping to pay any notice (or money) to some internationalist bureaucracy of 'enforcers' who want to suck up billions of dollars in carbon taxes! . "Hey, shut up! I just got me a cool job at the IEA!" -- "With a degree in Sociology...."
the oil industry is responsible for much of the blue collar workforce, it has to be subsidized with taxes and wars. manufacturing jobs left to china, japan, and korea.
You almost have that right..........China CO2 emission is 28%, USA is second with 15% and India, third, puts out 7% of the worlds CO2 emissions. Is that your reason to do nothing?
Here's a list of countries and their 'emissions', using data that are three years old (the most recent I could find without spending hours sifting through it all): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_carbon_dioxide_emissions The interesting thing you'll note is that China and India's pollution is increasing rapidly, while ours in the U. S. has been decreasing. Why do we need to have some big, bloated international bureaucracy coming in now forcing 'carbon taxes' on Americans -- especially in light of the fact that the Chinese and Indians have expressed nothing but indifference and scorn at the idea that anybody might try to do that to them! Why is it always AMERICANS who everybody else in the world expects to pay for everything that everyone causes...?
"Why is it always AMERICANS who everybody else in the world expects to pay for everything that everyone causes...?" That is a bizarre, untrue statement and doesn't answer my question.
BTW China has nearly five times the population of the US and produces twice the CO2, therefore the US produces much more pollution pre capita than China. The EU has 50% more people than the US and is doing much better with pollution control than the US with the help of carbon taxes.
