How would you determine if someone can be "trusted with a gun"???

    I would defer to you.
What do you believe constitutes proof that a violent felon can be trusted with a gun?
Whatever your thresshold, the felon stays in prison until he reaches that point.

wouldn't it depend on the type of crime this felon committed. Not all felons are guilty of violent crimes. Anyone that commits a violent crime should not have access to weapons. But that might be impossible........given how easy guns can be obtained. When dealing ht wit issues of trust and responsibility....... some psychological testing might be in order..........but that would be denounced before the idea was uttered out loud One cannot measure trust and other human personality characteristics........ except with psych testing. Even that might not be foolproof......but it would provide a good idea of the felons mental status. and level of handling responsibility. "trust " itself might not be the issue. Handling themselves in a responsible manner is. decision making ability factors in too.

    I said:
"Do not release violent felons from prison until they can be trusted with a gun"
    "Violent felon"
Whatever your threshold, the felon stays in prison until he reaches that point.

Most conservatives truly believe that nothing legislatively can or should be done to solve mass shootings.

To them, this is the price we have to pay to live in a free society.

While I do not own a gun and likely never will, I disagree with the notion that owning a gun equates to fear. Since owning a gun is in preparation for a potential eventuality where it could be needed, I fail to see the logic behind the rationalization that being prepared equates to fear. If anything, NOT being prepared is more closely associated with fear as opposed to the opposite.

Being prepared for eventualities is sensible and responsible. The reason we do prepare is out of concern.....fear of that eventuality.

I don't have any weapons either. And would not. If anything.....I am more afraid that something would go very wrong while using it........... as emotions are usually rather high when one resorts t o use weapons. Fear being one of them. Anger being another.

I share a similar "fear". Living in a good neighborhood, in my estimation, the odds of something bad happening with an accident or child getting ahold of it etc., outweigh the odds of me needing one. Although if there were an intruder in my house, I would rather have one versus not.

At any rate, I disagree with the notion that owning a gun equates to fear.

The problems with guns develop from folks who don't weigh all the consequences for their family and living situation like you just did. There used to be a time in the distant past now, where that was indeed one of the many valuable services an organization like the NRA performed, but as soon as they became a lobbying organization, that went out the window. Purchasing a gun in America has become way too easy, and leaving it to the consumer to seek out proper safety training isn't cutting it anymore.

Good point about the lobbying factor. Seems when politics come into play........things go south.;-)

It -should- be easy for the law abiding to exercise their rights.
    Why do you disagree?
Unsupportable nonsense, as proven by the minuscule number of accidental shootings in the US.
Never mind the state can no more require gun safety training as a requirement for the exercise of the right to keep and bear arms a sit can require sex-ed classes before the exercise of a right to abortion.

    Re:
How difficult should it be to exercise any of the rights guaranteed by our Bill of Rights?
    For example:
Should we have to have a government issued permit before posting on public forums like this one?

    Re:
People who want to learn to drive can and do find driving instructors.
Please clarify in which way finding proper safety instruction "... isn't cutting it anymore"

Because almost all mass shooters were law-abiding citizens at one point!

Because every criminal was once law abiding, we should make it harder for the law abiding to exercise their rights?
Why do you think this makes sense?

I know your posting history. What would be the point of discussing "sense" with someone who doesn't appreciate any sense but their own?

    Ah.
So, you're good with the the police randomly stopping and frisking inner-city youths - especially at night.
    Thanks.
As I figured - you cannot answer the question.

Well, actually both learn how to drive and pass the driving exam but you're right, there is no equivalent to that for guns.
At the same time, you don't have to pass an exam or require a license to be able to publicly express yourself by writing a newspaper editor, this forum or any other public assembly.

According to our government, driving on the public roads is a privilege while owning a firearm is a Constitutionally protected Right.

That's just the way it is.

You don't need a license to buy a car, own a car, possess a car, or operate a car on private property.
In this, the are exactly equivalent to firearms.

@Golem has a thread on here about the wording of the 2nd Amendment. Something has changed with the way it has been interpreted over the past 100 years. I realize all too well trying to have this discussion with 2A advocates is pretty futile, that's just the way it is.

However, this response, or rather to be more accurate, lack of wanting to address the problem with guns, is what will eventually undo the 2nd Amendment in its current form.

On the contrary - Heller is entirely consistent with all relevant jurisprudence from the USSC; the text of the opinion itself, demonstrates this to be true.
I know you will claim, but cannot demonstrate, otherwise - that's just how it is with anti-gun extremists.
