I hope you'll remember that KKK membership in the North was at least as high as down South(1) and the North didn't have to endure an oppressive "Reconstruction" infected by plundering Carpetbaggers.

It would be helpful to understand conditions in the defeated and destroyed South to understand that the early KKK membership wasn't exclusively based on racism.

For example, Northern occupiers would give political positions to Blacks who could not even read. Leaders who can't read are beneficial to neither Blacks or Whites.

Additionally, it's at least my opinion that he KKK wouldn't have come into existence if it had not been for the draconian policies of the Northern occupiers immediately after the War.
