I wonder why Russia has hardly used their airforce this whole time.

So far it's been old tanks that have been gathering rust in the fields up until now. That and the use of a whole bunch of young recruits.

My thoughts is that Russia didn't count on the overwhelming support of Nato, and thought that they could knock out 2 birds with one stone. Make use of those old tanks and to have their young recruits gain experience for future conflicts. Obviously that isn't working out too well.

As for not using their airforce; my only guess would be that Russia wants to preserve as much of Ukraine as humanly possible. So they've been using ground troops and a bunch of missiles up until now. If Russia wanted to, they could send a fleet of bombers and flatten Kiev tomorrow from high altitude. But what use is conquering a heap of rubble.

The Russians are regrouping right now and are waiting until winter. If nothing changes after, I wouldn't be surprised if Putin became frustrated and decided to burn it all down. Ukraine isn't Afghanistan. It's like Chechnya all over again.

Iran's FM admitted selling a "small number" of drones to Russia before the war.

I did not repeat Iran's FM earlier (albeit vaguely termed) denials about supplying drones to Russia because I didn't find them credible. But the latest formulation of the issue is probably true. Perhaps the phrase "small number" is relative to the ridiculous allegation by Zelensky/Ukraine that Russia was supplied "thousands" of such drones (an inflated estimate not to expose the false propaganda about how many have been shot down*). My own view is that Iran probably supplied a handful of the Mohajer-6 drones plus a few dozen Shahed-131 and Shahed-136 drones and kits with instructions on assembly of up to 380 such drones in total. I also don't think Iran will sell SRBM's to Russia despite being approached by the Russians with such a request.

*based on my own careful analysis and tracking of reports and eye-witness accounts, Ukraine's success rate in shooting down these drones has been around 10% (mostly shot down by combat aircraft). From around 270 Shahed-136 and slightly smaller Shahed-131 drones actually used by Russia since September, Ukraine has not been able to produce more than a mere handful of engines for these drones. Engines whose wreckage would usually survive hits except hits by missiles engulfing them. Nor has Ukraine ever shown wreckage of anything but an isolated drone that has been shot down, with around 10 unique pictures shown of such wreckage shown.
