It is possible that might have spread further, but during the course of the war communist insurgencies in Thailand and Malaysia were contained.

Vietnam was never presented as a direct threat to the West, but part of an indirect threat via the spread of communism in a strategically vital area.

Those nations fought communism inside their borders, something made much easier because the nations who would otherwise support those movements were busy in Vietnam.

....and it just gets worse. Ho Chi Minh was a committed communist for pretty much his entire adult life. He spent years working as a Comintern agent (that means working to spread & support communism on behalf of Moscow) in China & other parts of Asia during the 20s & 30s. He looked to Russia & China for support because they were his ideological compatriots. He already worked for and worked with those communist organizations. He was ALWAYS going to look to them for support. In fact, the US got involved in Indochina in support of France partly BECAUSE Ho sought & obtained Chinese support. Facts are complex, aren't they. That is why some people avoid them.

The US did make a huge mess of the war in Vietnam and a lot of people died unnecessarily as a result. It is also true to say the sun rises in the east & sets in the west - I believe there is a History Channel documentary about this if you are interested.
