By that time the clerics had turned on him. One man does not a gov't make. He may very well have been replaced by Islamists. That did not happen with a Shah.

They wrecked the Paris of the Middle East. You should be ashamed of yourself. Are you an American?

    Your version is from Wiki..

The real story is that Iran was getting 13 cents on the dollar in oil revenues from the British.. and that went directly into the coffers of the Shah.

Saudi Arabia was getting 50 cents on the dollar and so was everyone else.

Mosadeegh wanted Iranian oil money to benefit the Iranian people and their budding organic democracy..

It wasn't about ideology.. It was about MONEY.

Every oil man in the ME was horrified that Eisenhower had been sucked into this stupid fiasco.

Oh yes.. I know they wrecked Beirut.. I used to go there every year for two weeks with my family..

The Israelis planned a civil war in Lebanon for YEARS to install a Christian, mid level military officer who would be "friendly to Israel" as the president of Lebanon....

They wanted a free hand to annex land up to the Litani River.. just as they do now.

Must have been 2003 when Sharon last threatened to divert the Wazzami River in Lebanon.. The Butcher threatened war.

So, Mossadegh wanted to diminish the aristocratic and British powers over his land and divert more power to the people.

Of course, he was met with opposition. What is your point?

Bit of a re-write of history there.

I was unaware that Israel is trying to annex the land up to the Litani. When did they re-invade?

Israelis planned FOR a civil war, but they sure as heck didn't plan the war itself. Arafat and the PLO had a something to say about it, however.

All Zionist writings from 1900 forward wanted southern Lebanon.. and it comes up again and again in the writing of Sharret and Moshe Dayan.

Yes.. the Israelis planned the Lebanese civil war.. for many years.. That's why they armed the Phalangists years before the war.

Israel was invading Lebanon over and over again all thru the 1950s.. with graders, dump trucks and armed soldiers. .. to steal fertile top soil.

It wasn't a (*)(*)(*)(*)ing democracy it was a budding communist dictatorship coup in the making.

One cannot use Democracy to end Democracy.

Also, during the Cold War.. there were consequences to adopting communism. We changed your regime.

You obviously don't understand that communism is our enemy and we have a moral duty to destroy it wherever it pops its ugly head up, including Iran in 1953.

    Jonsa:

Accordingly, in 1951, contrary to the armistice agreements and over the protests of U.S. and U.N. officials, the Israelis began moving military units and bulldozers into the demilitarized zone on the Syrian border. Spurred by hostilities in the area over water, in 1953, the Eisenhower Administration prepared a unified plan for the use of the Jordan River. In September 1953, Israel, in an apparent attempt to preempt the American plan, secretly began a crash program to construct a nine-mile long pipeline in the demilitarized zone to divert Jordan River waters.

When the Americans learned of Israel's activities which included around the clock work crews, they protested and President Eisenhower went so far as to suspend vital economic aid to Israel. No announcement about the aid suspension was made at the time, perhaps to keep from drawing the ire of the Zionist lobby at home.

However, soon afterward, the Israelis launched an unrelated attack on a West Bank Jordanian village, killing 53 people which came to be known as the Kibya massacre. As a result of the ensuing furor, on October 18, 1953, the Eisenhower administration made public its cutoff of aid to Israel. Eleven days later, under the pressure from the U.S. Zionist lobby and a pledge by Israel to suspend work on the diversion project, U.S. aid was resumed. (Taking Sides: America's Secret Relations with a Militant Israel, by Stephen Green, William Morrow and Co., N.Y. 1984. "The 1953 Aid Cutoff: A Parable for Our Times," pp. 76- 93.)

Israeli work on diverting the water of the Jordan River was only temporarily suspended -- perhaps for as long as two years. By 1960, however, the diversion project -- which came to be known as the National Water Carrier -- was complete and in fact was the target of the PLO's first (and unsuccessful) attack in 1964.

The shah, of course, was a famous democrat. At that time, left to themselves, many people would have voted for communism, and would certainly have been better off than they are now.

From decades of reading original sources and listening to VOA , BBC and Radio Free Europe all during the 1950s and 1960s.

I remember how pissed Eisenhower was over the attempt to take the Jordan River and over the Kibya Massacre.

It's amazing how often Communist was defined as "left-wing government which will hurt American business interests" in the 1950s and 60s. Some were Communists, some leaned that way and some (especially in Latin America) were just left-wing but they all were targeted by the CIA and/or direct military action.

Mosadeegh wasn't a Communist at all.

He wanted a fair share of Iranian oil revenues to fund the budding democracy.

The Brits painted him as a Communist to discredit him and get the US on board..

And of course the Soviets would jump on any potential opportunity to expand their influence back then.. as they did after the Lavon Affair in Egypt.

Obama is backing israel silently as we did in their previous wars which allowed them to wipe out the egyptian air force and other mid east countries so easily in the past

that is better than the republican approach which too public and offensive to some, this way israel will strike iran with US backing but it will not be made official as to hold Americans liable

“Iran’s warriors are ready and willing to wipe Israel off the map,” Vahidi said.
