What do you think would happen if the US did something that pissed off China so much that they called in the debt in full and demanded payment.

We'd become at best a protectorate of the Chinese Empire, and at worst just part of China.

Honestly we probably wouldn't do anything. I mean what is China going to do? Invade us?

A trade war that would crucify the American consumer...

which would shrink disposable/discretionary income available to small business...
which would drive unemployment numbers higher...
which would further shrink the the tax base...
which would further increase the speed of Big Fed's printing presses...
which would send inflation through the roof...
which, rinsed and repeated, would all culminate in sending us towards an economic death spiral...

which would ultimately result in total economic collapse and societal chaos.

"What would happen if China called in the debt? "

i guess we would have to claim bankruptcy like Russia did not so many years back

Russia keeps hoping we build a wall between Mexico and here so they can say... America tear down that wall

Hmmm, I think it would depend on who the president is. if I was the president (which I will never be) I would order some logging, print some money, give it all back to Chinos (and other criminals) and then right after that establish new money for American people to restore economy.

Surely not another losing one .
What the US needs is a nice easy war where even they can beat the opposition .
I think they owe this to their literally suffering troops and the puzzled US public .

Bejing has moved on from such thoughts some time ago .
Clearly if they pulled the plug and all other Sovereign States followed , the US would literally be brought to the Default position .
However , China needs to minimise its potential losses from money already lent , and it has recognised that overall the US position is desperate , whilst they just have a huge problem , not a terminal disease.
So already the two countries have engaged in several meetings from which China has been given huge extra powers over US fiscal management and the US has won a long term partner of mutual convenience.
It is no natural alliance but the US is bankrupt now and has no other escape options

It's safe to say that China won't invade America no matter the economic situation. It's just not practical, how would they run and enforce an area as large as the US? I think China would just cancel the debt - probably partially (most likely) until it was repaid.

That is already an agreed work in progress .
That is , China is raising the value of the Yuan incrementally as the US continues to devalue the Dollar .
And if there is a combined fall in the $US versus the Yuan of 50% , for example , US debt would be halved .
However, the losers will be Americans as they see inflation reduce the country's wealth disastrously .

No, it is against our Constitution to do so.

China needs the US as a trading partner. A bankrupt US will not do any good.

China would do nothing. There is nothing they could do except set up an embargo (which would be impractical for them)

The Chinese military could not do anything against the US military. Neither side would go to war for the obvious disastrous consequences of starting WWIII.

The US would have representatives on TV pretending like it matters and blaming the opposite side for the 'problem' our country is facing. Additionally, political pundits would be psyched about their ratings increase.

    In a nutshell...

The difference being, our wall would be to keep others from coming in. Theirs was to keep citizens from leaving.

They seem to be doing a pretty good job of trying to bankrupt us.

They have the largest army on earth, and their soldiers are pretty well trained. A war with them would be as easy as you think.

American money is worth as much as a roll of toilet paper if China calls in the debt.

China's economy is a bubble that is close to bursting. The writing is on the wall.
When their economy collapses and sinks into recession, they will be calling in American debt. Where the USA is going to find the money to pay the Chinese is anyone's guess. Trying to find a trillion dollars to suddenly borrow is going to push up interest rates, making the debt burden less sustainable.

I do not think the Chinese will be lending the USA any more money.

We would obviously default and then we'd have a crap credit rating but they would be broke.
