Calling his inability to find employment in his field a "failing" when he's obviously both very intelligent and very hard-working is an extremely ignorant thing to write. You're making it out as if the economic situation is his fault. You sound just like a typical liberal, who blames someone for the circumstances outside his control that are upsetting him. Do you and your ilk ever consider the possibility that bad circumstances might not be the frustrated person's fault, and that even if that frustrated person reacts inappropriately to those bad circumstances outside his control, that it's still incorrect to state the circumstances are his fault? For all we know, it was dickheads telling him that his inability to find a job in this economic climate was his fault that set him off.

    You definitely get it.

Anchor people need to choose their words more carefully. You can say that this man needed help. You can tell people to pity him. But once you start actually making him out to be the enemy, you're in effect declaring war against people out there who at this very moment are admiring him. I realize that something at least mildly negative needs to be said about the man for the sake of the sheeple and their need for a Two Minute Hate, but it should be limited to mere condescension (e.g., by referring to him as needing help and encouraging us to be nicer to each other) if at all possible.

Indeed, it could be a combination of factors.

I think that he had all of the body armor on due to the off chance that there was someone with a concealed pistol or revolver in the theater.

If you're referring to prison rape, whether he is sentenced to death or not, he's not going to go to general pop.

Back in the day, megalomania was punishable by impalement. Case in point:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y1WVE5ljJaA

But apparently this wasn't enough to deter this kind of behaviour

In any case, just wondering if correlations exist with another shooting spree by one named Charles Whitman

Like the 1%? Did he blame the 1% for stealing his corner office job from him?

Did he blame the 1% for stealing his free health care and free housing?

The Joker has a lot more in common with the OWS movement than the Tea Party.

Yeah...in Texas I think they also fry any family, friends, childhood pets, past school teachers, and anyone who might have had contact with the accused, just to make sure they have it all covered

Which is terribly unfortunate. General pop for the rest of his life with the guards looking the other way may actually provide a deterrent

I am not a clinical psychologist or a psychaitrist, but I'm not a moron either. The definition of insantiy is constantly evolving and changing in the psychiatric community. Do you think this is an exact science? Is the first DSM I the same as the last DSM V (or whatever)? Unlike mathmatics and physics, psychiatry is shaped by political and subjective motives. If this "science" was so wonderful and predictable why are evaluations by these experts by the defence and prosecution so often different?

Is it not easy for intelligent people to trick even professional experts into thinking their personalities are something different than what they really are? How convicing is a good actor? Anthony Hopkins sure was convincing as Hannibal Lecter. And to diagnose Jerad Loughner, or Hitler as a schitzo---well that's just an opinion of some.

Our Constitution demands a trial by jury, and it is almost a certainly, especially if the Federals take over the case, that "the Joker" will be deemed by some leftist judge to be "insane" and unfit for trial. James Holmes will escape justice, just wait and see.

I realize that I'm a nerd/geek and this will seem a bit too pedantic for you, but the OWS protesters think of themselves as "good" people, who wish to use chaos to bring about a communist, and in their heads "fair" social order. Libertarians and primitivists as myself think that we are "good" and want to have limited government and an individualist social order such as "tribalism".

Anyone who reads comic books, plays D&D knows what I'm about to tell you...

OWS would be classified as Chaotic Good, Primitivists would straddle Chaotic Good/Chaotic Neutral.

The Joker is Chaotic Evil. He wants to destroy things for no purpose, create no society.

Someone willing to go to this length and describe himself that way...he is chaotic evil. He probably thinks somehow he will escape and do more evil. He wants to hurt people, even little kids, obviously.

As I said before, he needs to be bathed in honey and thrown in the bear pit at the zoo.

Applying a deterrent only works if you do it before the crime.

One witness report suggested there may have been an accomplice.

Do you have a link? I'd like to read it. If it is a female...it would make more sense.

No, they just commit other types of violence, like armed robbery, assault, targeted killings (O.J. murders), animal abuse (Michael Vick). Why do you think that it's nicknamed the "National Felons League"? This is extremely disingenuous.

Populations with lower average testosterone have less crime and higher intelligence (see Rushton's works), so to portray "testosterone filled captain of the football team" types as less damaging to society as well as more useful to society is absurd in the extreme.

Actually, if your testosterone gets too low you actually become aggressive again. Some of our clients are LT heroin users and have low testosterone levels and outbursts of rage. I had to do research on the subject and spoke to several doctors about it, hence why men go a little nuts during "male menopause".

Actually, as someone who was involved in D&D myself back in the 80's (and even did art for some of the games) my impression is that OWS would be Chaotic Neutral (maybe trending towards evil) and I base that on the number of crimes committed by the membership while meeting. There were too many criminal incidents with the crowds there to classify them as good.

They believe they are doing "good", how does chaotic evil believe it is a force for good?

Yes, but the joker wasn't ever the "hero" in his own story. He was just (*)(*)(*)(*)ing around and having fun.

Exactly. There are many, many people who seem to be 'quiet' or 'wierdos', perhaps with interests in 'geeky' things or whatever, and even who 'cheer' for the villains in fantasy movies or enjoy playing vilains in D&D and the like, but who are absolutely no danger whatsoever to anyone - they know that is all just made up, and nothing to do with reality. Fixations on a particular comic franchise might have determined the method of the attack, but it isn't what causes someone to have the mental deficiency to be unable to see right from wrong and to carry out such an attack. That's something else - a particular lack of the empathy with fellow human beings and their suffering, and/or a lack of ability to understand the differences between fantasy and reality, that well over 99.9% of humanity would consider to be 'normal'. It goes a long way beyond being a 'misfit', or liking some things that other people think go too far even for fantasy, or even having what some people might consider to be dubious moral ideals.

It's nothing to do with politics, either. Even if there were some political motiviation or element to the twisted reasoning which justified his actions in his own mind (and I've not seen anything to suggest that, other than random silly accusations and speculations), that's not what allows a human being to carry out such an attack on perfectly innocent people just going about their business. It's not politics that have 'made this happen', any more than it is 'social misfit-ness' or even 'social awkwardness (many social awkward people go through their whole lives being socially awkward, without ever feeling the need to commit mass murder!).

It has to be a psychological condition of some kind which has allowed this inividual to mis-develop so badly in the head as to see some kind of merit in actions like this, regardless of why he chose the target he did or did it in the way that he did. Ths was obviously way beyond playing a game or watching a film - not being able to see that such things should never cross into reality is a major mental problem. Whether those psychological factors are sufficient to confine him to a hospital or a prison, or whether they make him 'insane' or 'evil' (and there could potentially be a fine line between those, and in an inexact science!), is a matter for the courts to decide on the evidence, of course, but I don't really think it matters that much - he is clearly a danger who cannot be let out into society again, so clearly should spend the rest of his life locked away for the safety of everyone else.
