In the plant I worked in some systems had been around since WWII. You can not just walk people in the door and teach them to run a mixer, an oven... and the sad part is many operators can not do their job without maintenance to get it going for them.

You are talking about a company where a mechanic would be called and an oven full of bread burned if one pan turned sideways because it may be a contract violation for the operator to actually turn the pan.

Now this never happened where I was. It was made clear to all of us in maintenance that if we got called and the operator had fixed it that we were to say we corrected the issue. That man could lose his job for saving the company thousands of dollars and hours of production.

The COmpany my not be allowed to hire people outside of the Union as well. Depends on the state.

They'll just move their plants to either right to work states or over seas. The company will rise again, will the workers?

A quick story that's true because I had personal knowledge about it. There was a business owner that had a small to medium manufacturing company with about 120 employees. It was a non-union shop but the union came in to "organize" the workers. The owner wanted nothing to do with a union as he'd always had a personal relationship with each and every employee. They could walk into his office anytime and he'd even helped out in family emergencies providing additional money to employees for financial emergencies. Not a loan but simple financial assistance.

Cutting to the chase. The vote for whether to unionize or not was fast approaching so the owner called the employees together along with a government labor representatives and he stated flat out, and I paraphrase, "I've long since made all of the money I need in life and I've kept the business going for each and every one of you. We've always had a very good relationship, I pay better than industry wages, I provide health insurance for you and your families, and we've always had a close relationship. This business exists for you today and not for me. Bringing in the union means that we would be severing our personal ties as you will no longer be a "person" that can just walk in my door to discuss anything you choose. Instead I'd only be talking with a union representative and that isn't acceptable to me. Simply stated if you vote for a union shop I'm going to close the doors on the plant. Each one of you will receive two weeks severence pay and I will wish you the best of luck in the future."

The government labor representative almost came unglued. He told the owner, "You can't threaten the employees" and the owner calmly replied, "I didn't threaten them, I told them the truth. If they vote for a union I'm closing the business."

Sadly the workers did vote for union representation, the owner closed the business, and they all lost their jobs. Unfortunately many of the workers voted against the union but they were a minority and they also lost their jobs.

    Not the employees.

Management. Management made decisions that created the debt and now want the workers to foot the bill.

What do you say we get rid of everyone at the VP level and above. I see 10 million bucks there that could go toward fixing the problem.

I agree. Anyone that wants 100% of nothing rather than 93% of something deserves nothing.

Sad but true. Many people are pressured into unions as well. They get their names posted monthly on a scab list... They get called free loaders and worse.

Where? I haven't seen a single link detailing salaries.

I say it will not make even a ding noise in the massive union debt.

Everyone wants to blame Hostess. When in all actuality, it is simple economics. Brand names have better products, but you pay for it. The great majority of people are buying generic everything due to poor economy. Add on top of that competition the price of Hostess's unionized workforce, and they didn't stand a chance. Quite honestly, amazing they lasted this long. Wish they would have moved their factories to a right to work state like Idaho 10 years ago. We would have jobs we desperately need and they'd still be in business. Yes, poor management, but not how most are thinking.

I understand unionized labor. Metal workers, electricians, etc. Unionized Twinkie makers? Please.

I don't care how long you have worked for a place, if the only thing you can put on a resume is the company's name, you probably shouldn't unionize. Have fun looking for work.

Unions still exist in right to work states. Companies and employees just have more of a choice. A lot of times unions are the right choice, if one wants a highly skilled workforce they don't have to train, for instance, and the price is right. Public sector unions have the state by the balls. Totally different subject. But as the nation slowly dies, the states will get the incentive of lost tax revenue to do something about it.

Hostess went from the business of making and selling cupcakes......into the Business of funding bloated Union Slob pensions and gold plated health care.....

......Hostess reached the same destination as GM and Chrysler.....the same outcome as a plethora of Union run Democrat cities across this once great nation.....Bankruptcy....... its Liberalism and Unions realized.

In a just world......all of the 18,500 layed off employees would be Democrat voters.....

Not even pressured but forced. You have willing and able people who want to work, but can only do so if they join the union. What kind of crap is that?

Well the patient is dead. Management threw it over the cliff, unplugged it's life support, accused the workers of standing on the hose of the respirator, and the sheeple believe the workers killed the company. (*)(*)(*)(*) shame people will not wake up and realize what is killing this nations economy.

    CORPORATE GREED!

    Just a (*)(*)(*)(*) shame.

Don't worry Twinkie junkies as we speak the looters (management) are already working on obtaining the rights so they (traitors to their nations economy that they are) can move the operation to Mexico, and increase their salaries, bonuses, benefits, 10 fold, while paying Paco and Pancho, the cost of a box of Ding Dongs for every 14 hour shift they donate to their masters cause just like a good little slave ought to. The price will remain the same and the quality will be sacrificed (just like Levi's did) but stupid people everywhere will still purchase the chemical laden junk food for generations to come.

    That is my prediction.

That would be easier than actually reading the information in the thread, addressing the facts, or finding any of your own to substantiate your "belief" and "prediction".

All about blame ain't it joe? I am going to ask this again and I never get an answer.

Who the hell paid them to get there? Who the hell demanded maximized profits for their 401K?

Risk takers, Innovators, Initial Investors and Stake Holders. We put it on the line for the sorry asses to reap the benefits! What the hell has most of cry baby america done? Nothing but (*)(*)(*)(*)(*) and hold out a hand!

I am not rich or wealthy but I got mine. I am still what is considered a risk taker by definition but in reality I am just another person who has tried to be responsible.

SO ask yourself a question - WTF have any of these union members done?

I appreciate your sentiment. I appreciate your venom. I appreciate your loyalty.

Fact of the matter is, no one "pretends to be bankrupt" to outsource/off shore. They just do it.

No one closes the doors of a profitable enterprise to prove a point.

No one closes the doors of a profitable enterprise to make some quick money. They sell it. (Obviously, excluding venture moves on Wall St., stripping and selling, Mitt's turf, usually done to a company in the tank already.)

Put their faith and labor on the line for the contractual obligation the management agreed to, but didn't provide. Instead management got theirs and f*&%ed everybody else.

I'm not rich either and I worked for everything I have and I didn't get it by taking it up the ass by a bunch of f*&%ing crooks. If a check bounced I went to the person's house who signed the check and got my money. We had an agreement. I expect that obligation to be adhered to. If money was late, or they didn't keep up their end of the agreement, our agreement was/is over. You let people take advantage of you and they have zero respect for you. You don't want my labor, it's valuable enough to get compensation from another source. Like the old saying goes, I was looking for a job when i found this one.

Well they did not like the deal they were offered and chose to look elsewhere! Say how many of those workers held graduate degrees? How many of them spent years reaching for the top?

I don't think originally it was their intent to destroy it just bleed it dry for everything they could get. They just drained the host a bit too much, and if they can obtain the rights I believe some of these leaches will figure out a way to assume those rights and Juarez, Nogales, and Tijuana will be the new location for their bakeries.

If there is any failure here, it is the failure of management to properly manage the company. If the company could not support the pay the unions were asking for, then they should have never agreed to it. Time to let a failing company die. American health will surely not suffer more for it.

and considering the fact that I have not bought anything from Hostess in over a decade...I certainly will not miss them.
