One of the biggest problems in American politics is the fact that four years into their first term, a sitting President is so busy trying to get reelected that they lose sight of their duty. I think it would be more effective to have the president serve a single 8 year term, and then be done with it. One term for every president, and they can not run again. So, the President would then be able to focus on doing their job without needing to kiss ass and babies every four years. If a president is unpopular, a "vote of no confidence" could be implemented. If enough people, I would say around 10% to 15% of registered voters sign a petition, a type of recall election would be held, in which the people vote on whether or not to remove the president from power. Basically it would be an impeachment by the people. The Vice-President would finish out the term.
how many of our recent vice-presidents would you have been comfortable giving presidential power to? quayle? gore? cheney? biden? there is a reason these men played second fiddle.
Well, Clinton was popular enough that he would have been fine. Cheney, quite frankly would have been better than Bush, and again Obama would not be removed from office. He would have enough support to get a simple majority in a recall election. And, if need be, we could make it so both Potus and Vice Potus are removed and the Speaker of the House takes over, or even that a full election is held and a new president is elected immediately after the former is removed.
Probably because he wasn't or isn't a leftist wuss, and the fact that he's the greatest VEEP in our nation's history.
That would make the President a lame duck from day 1. I think that a system like you suggest would create a very unstable government. Most nations with one term presidencies, the President has no real power and the executive authority is in the hands of the leader of the lower legislative house,
Actually, the Commonwealth of Virginia has one six year term for the governor. It seems to have worked effectively enough.
