I am happy to see you do not believe the Earth is about 6000 years old.

I never implied anything close to what you have posted as far as...quote...The christian religion is not an ideology. Explain me something else: Why do you think the christian religion is a kind of cosmological ideology?

    Never even hinted at this.

Pope John Paul II was a good man.

He came out in public and told the Faithful that the Vatican Science Team had determined that EVOLUTION was a reality and that Humans had in fact developed and shared a common ancestor with Great Apes.

As well he told the Faithful that the Vatican believed there was a high probability that Humans were not the only intelligent life in the Universe and that there was also a high probability that E.T. existed.

The Italian Media WENT NUTZ and the next day the Newspaper Headlines were...POPE SAY'S WE COME FROM MONKEY'S!

my daughter an archeologist and a historian (and atheist) says the catholic church's view on science is badly misunderstood, they are very pro science and much of the public's belief that the church denied/fought science is myth...Gregor Mendal a monk was the father of genetics...

Gorn Captain, I guess so. I'm not religious, I was just trying to clarify how most modern Christians I know interpret the 7 day creation period.

Nice that you are happy - nevertheless: what has this cosmological question to do with "happiness" and "belief"?

I been sitting here for like an hour trying to address this, and the whole time, it's about the easiest thing to understand, the difficulty is in finding the best approach to it because it's too much information all at once, to go off on too many tangents, but the best way I come up with, it's pretty much everything that song "Amazing Grace" is about, that is, the simple definition of the word "day". I know that people who are against the religion, they want to make it all out to be some fairy tale, and they laugh, and it's sad because they lack appreciation. Faith is to metaphysics what electricity is to physics, it's the energy through which the signals flow on their carrier waves, believe it or not, my word is my proof, if that's not good enough for you, oh well, it's only a sin if I'm a liar, not whether you believe me no matter what. Well, a day is a cycle of time, could be any amount of time, whatever the duration relative to some mechanical clock, but specifically has to do with an emergence or transition from a state of darkness to an enlightenment. Day 1, Genesis, the light itself was called out from the darkness, and everything else follows from there. Now we have these machines, and they all run on input-output cycles, invented according to the scientific method, and what do the people use them for? To dispute the existence of Days. Go figure.

"The universe is 13.82 billion years old." is the current answer on a process what started once because someone liked to know how many years it really were since the world was created. One of the first steps to change this question from a question of quality into a question of quantity was it to read the bible and to count the years: the result was: "The world is about 6000 years old". The last step in this approximation was in the current year 2013, while the scientists in Cern made experiments to verify the higgs-particle - or to falsify the not-existance of the higgs-field - or however they are doing it.

But for the life of a human being it's nearly unimportant wether the world is 6000 years old or the world is 13.82 billion years. The quality is in both cases "The world is old".

So why is this question so unbelievable important in the english speaking world? And why exists such a wide spectrum of fanaticisms in the english speaking world in context with this question?

It was not man achieved science and used it to gain a great wealth of knowledge and then this allowed people to ask reasonable questions of the stories written in the Bible that those who had Faith decided to start interpreting the Bible in a specific manner that might allow such questions to be answered.

Prior to this the Bible and such stories as Genesis...were ALWAYS taken literally.

    A DAY...meant an EARTH DAY.

Now in the presence of knowledge that allows us to know that there are aspects in the Bible that cannot possibly facts.

Here is the thing....even if a person was to assign a specific length of time in say Millions of Years to a single day that is talked about in Genesis....each day would have to be assigned a different length of time as the time periods between such things as the Big Bang, the beginning of Nuclear Fusion in our Sun thus Light....the Earth having water on it and then being able to support life....well not only are all these things occurring not doing so in a uniform measure of time but as well they are out of order as listed in Genesis.

The Bible is a group of STORIES...created by Ancient Man for the purpose of teaching morality.

    These stories are not FACTS.

Understanding the age of the Universe IS VASTLY IMPORTANT!

To know this allows us to understand aspects of Quantum Evolution and if we can understand all such things it allows up to begin to design PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS as such things in Energy Generation, Quantum Physics, Elemental Creation and other can vastly improve our lives and the Human Condition.

If you say so, but seems like communication breakdown to me. This idea of "literal" or "figurative" interpretations... You're correct, it's always literal, the only difference is in the images that comes to mind from one person to the next. Maybe some question, which came first, the chicken or the egg? I study this, sort of what I do whenever I'm not totally slacking off with the Internet, and it's hard. How to explain... It's like you want to switch from analog to digital, so you get a new TV, and then you think about what TV used to look like before, and you know there's a difference, but you don't pretend like it's digital, do you? Well, it's still electromagnetic waves, whether it's digital or analog, and that's what I'm talking about. One is developed from out of the other, just like science is developed from out of religion, that 1+1=2 is a basic FACT by what it means, yet to write it down like that is using religious symbols, which are numerals. They're religious because you have to believe in them, you have to have faith that they have meaning, that the shape has information there, that information moves faster than light in a spooky way, and that paradox has been known by people for a long, long time before anyone ever started to debate what invisible membrane might there be to separate physical transistors from logical bits. It really wasn't until United States Constitution came out with the 1st Amendment that anyone had the freedom to express what they're thinking in a public forum, before that it was all kept secret from the powers that be. That's my opinion, anyways.

    THE CHICKEN WAS FIRST!

I would have to disagree with you as far as the 1+1=2 thing...I do not believe this....I KNOW THIS to be a fact.

As far as belief in what the symbols mean....that being awareness that the symbol 1 = one...well that cannot be equated to faith as I does not matter what symbol I associate with one....one could have assigned to it....&.

Thus & could be known as one and % could be known as two. It doesn't matter what symbols are used as long as you understand what one and two are as FACT.

In Faith and Religion...if in Genesis a day represented say 100 Million Years...well that would be fine. The problem is that the period from day 1 to day 3...which given this system would represent 300 million years...when looking at scientific fact the events between day 1 and day 3 would represent 1 Billion years or more.

THAT...is the hole in your logic.

If you want to state that in Genesis a day is simply a symbol for another value and if this value cannot be scientifically the same as it is used in the Bible as every time the word day is used in the bible it would mean a different value of amount of time.

That is a fact and thus....this argument has no validity. Sorry.

Why is it that every time I post things based upon Logic and Reason when discussing Religious Text....someone goes and states this makes no sense?

The Hebrew Bible was clearly stated not to be taken literally by the people in the Hebrew Bible. You are wrong. Commentary has always gone hand in hand with the stories of the Bible.

The original Text of the Hebrew Bible does not state it should not be taken literally.

That was added in the late 1800's .

Actually....you have to look at this question from an evolutionary perspective.

Now in order for a EGG to exist it must have been first LAID by something.

We know that a Single Celled Organism was the first life form on the planet and this reproduced by Mitosis. Thus it took many Millions of years before a single celled organism evolved to become a Multicellular organism capable of reproducing Sexually and having both a male and female of the species.

Thus if one goes back in evolution the animal must exist FIRST before it became capable of reproducing sexually and thus laying an EGG.

    Thus....The CHICKEN came first.
