"The public says Republicans bear more responsibility for shutting down the government than Democrats, according to a CBS News poll released on Thursday.

According to the survey, 44 percent said congressional Republicans are to blame, against only 35 percent who blame President Obama or Democrats in Congress. That’s a considerably narrower gap than the previous shutdown in 1995, when Republicans took the blame by a margin of 51 percent to 28 percent.

However, a full 72 percent disapprove of shutting down the government over differences in the Affordable Care Act, which is the primary reason Republicans initiated the showdown over funding the government."

Oh, but I wouldn't worry....this is a skewed poll. Don't trust it. Romney's going to win in a landslide. :)

What a sad state of affairs that the Tea Party has brought upon the US. Their extremism is rife with incompetence and dogma, a perfect mix to bring about this state of affairs. They have hijacked the Republican party and are so bent, they refuse to see anything but what they want to see. To boot, all the followers claim ACA will be a disaster, yet their policies from the past decade nearly ruined this nation and they want to go back to those same policies. They wonder why there is little respect for them.

The GOP keeps pulling this stuff where their support is in the 30s (30-38%...i.e. the Tea Party numbers). How long can they keep going....going AGAINST the wishs of the majority of voters?!?!?

    - - - Updated - - -

Actually, I think the idiots were those who locked themselves in a Rightwing Media Echo Chamber last year....and ACTUALLY BELIEVED there was going to be a "Romney Landslide" and all information and polling to the contrary was the "Lib'rul Media" because Rush and Beck and Hannity and Stuart Varney, et al told them so. :)

Oh, I'm sure your elderly parents will mail back their Social Security and refuse their Medicare and let YOU take care of their bills. :)

Naturally you don't apply that same theory to the Senate and White House, right??? :)

Patronizing his TP jihadists is not working for Boehner or the GOP, and suicide bombers are not terribly amenable to reason.

A possible escape route might be his appealing to Missourian skepticism, and allowing the nation to witness the predicted debacle of "ObamaCare."

If they are so convinced that the Affordable Care Act will not recapitulate the success of its Massachusetts Republican paradigm, rather than fearing its living up to its model, allow the law of the land to be implemented so that Americans can judge the reality, not Chicken Little auguries.

If it fails, it fails. Repeal with public support would rapidly ensue, a triumph for its critics, an embarrassing defeat for its proponents - a consummation devoutly to be wished one might reasonably assume.

Why are they so loathe to actually put the law to the test for all to see?

Methinks they doth protest too much.

That's a fact! They ALL underestimated the vast number of hoodwinked bozos wandering about out there, fer sure. But from my perch up here on the barn roof it looks like both sides are only able to perceive, think, and act out of their own particular brand of brainwashing.

If the Tea Partyers are the "majority"....why do they oppose allowing a "clean CR" vote to take place?

UNLESS...they know enough sane Republicans will vote with the Democrats and pass it, thus showing they are NOT the "majority" and a plurality of the House is anti-Tea Party?

Let me see if I have this correct. In 1995, 23% more people blamed the GOP for the shutdown, and this time only 9% more blame the shutdown on the GOP. That blame in 1995 must have really hurt the GOP in the next election. Let's see the next election year was 1996. Clinton won re-elected. The GOP lost 6 House Seats, but still retained control of the House (228 GOP to 206 DNC and 1 Independent). The GOP actually picked up two seats in the Senate, and retained control (55 to 45). That does not seem like it did too much harm to me.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/104th_United_States_Congress

So, I really doubt a 9% difference will matter much. Especially when people realize that it is in fact the Democrats that are refusing to compromise.

So, I will ask you for a third time. Who get's hurt by extending the Individual Mandate for one year?

If the ideology of the media were to reverse this would poll 85/15. Obama's approval would be below the Bush minimum at 20%.

Mitch McConnell has just declared a victory for the GOP because they can now negotiate down to keeping this year's sequestration & austerity & bush tax cuts intact ...

Yeah thats kind of where I am at. If this will be such a huge disaster, then let it happen. The Republicans can not be seen as having done anything wrong, but set themselves up as the knights in white armor to ride in and fix the system when they win by a landslide in 2016

I don't quite understand what the Democrats in office need to "compromise" on. The ACA has been passed into law and was deemed constitutional. The GOP shuts down the government because instead of making their own solution they refuse to pass a budget with the ACA being funded.

Right now congress is like a basketball court. While the Libs wanna play horse the GOP wants to play around the world. Since the Libs have the basketball the GOP says the Libs aren't compromising, takes their basketball and goes home.

Well, hate to be a downer but overall public opinion has no bearing on these guys.

Massive redistricting has created a very predictable outcome for most congressional elections. Chances are that the people in their districts see them as heros no matter what they do.

Simply think of the GOP as Somalian pirates ... with the tea party as the al-queda faction.

It is difficult to believe that the TPs have the President's and Democrats' interests at heart, and are so desperate to spare them an embarrassment that they are willing to become even more noxious to the American electorate rather than allow their predicted debacle to unfold.

Some think of the Democrats as the old Soviet Union....with Obama, Pelosi and Reid leading officials in the politburo Central Committee.
