Cycling on the road is beyond stupid. As I sit in my car pumping out poisonous gas, surrounded by other cars doing the same thing, I see people jogging and cycling on the road and I quietly think 'you stupid f's, all that hard working exercise and your filling your body with pollutants'. Find a park or get a mountain bike, seriously.

On the issue of road safety, its ludicrous as well. It's not a matter of if, but when your going to go down. Then its a matter of how serious will it be.

Car's have much more variables to manage as they are often going faster yet are less maneuverable. You do not put the burden of separation responsibility on the faster and less maneuverable vehicle. It should be on the bike, but of course because cars go faster bike's cannot make avoidance as fast as accidents could occur. Whoever thought that this means car's had the responsibility needs to realize car's are spending a lot of time thinking about a larger footprint of activity, where 90% of the time bikes are not a factor. Given bikes are so difficult to detect under the best of times, it is asking for trouble. So they need separated lanes or safety pilot vehicles like with wide load trucks. Mixing them is stoooopid, and since its going to be the bike rider who gets pancaked, riding on the roads is stoopid.

But for me the silliest bit is exercising amongst the pollution, lol. So yea, do gym on workdays and travel to ride somewhere clean and safe on days off. Else pay a small rego fee so you can at least be held accountable for your behaviour, like every other road user has to.

    Hey man,
it only works together, all road users have the same right, but also the same duties.
You think you are superior in a car compared to a cyclist, do think again....
I believe it would be a good thing for kids to cycle to school, much more healthy, less obesity.
All it needs is a fair go from car drivers, like you.
Just incorporate them into your tiny little world....
    Regards

If you use the road, you should be paying rego for the use of the road regardless of whether you are in a motor vehicle or ride a pushbike. Giving a group of people who ride pushbikes special access to the road, and not charge them access for road use is violating the human rights of the people who have to pay rego on vehicles to use the road.

Where is the ethical and moral code of conduct from Governments that can decide one group of people have to pay to use a road, and another group can use the road for free based on NO equity or equality.

I have 2 vehicles. Does that mean I only have to register one, and can use the other one without rego like bike riders do?

If bike riders can use our roads for free without registration, I will legally start challenging the legitimacy of being forced to register my vehicles for road use.

Exxon mobile would be pleased to see cyclists paying rego. A cyclist is doing the right thing by the environment therefore should be given some privileges as a consequence.

Its unhealthy to cycle in exhaust, perhaps not disease forming, but unhealthy nonetheless.... that should not be promoted by government. Breath in pollution while exercising to save the environment.... yikes.

    The answer is bike paths.

A small rego fee to use road's covering the cost of admin, requiring license plates to be shown, does not stop non-road biking, such as bike paths, backyards or bush trails. Tour de Lycra is egoist and unsafe to pedestrians and cyclists, with minimal to zero environmental impact (unless everyone started doing it). Some of them even think its ok to lean on and touch other peoples cars, WTF!?

I totally agree, and may be our first time we see it the same way.
So maybe best that we get rid of all cars at least in our cities, to start with.
I knew you had what it takes......

Bike riders claim they pay registration to use the roads, but at the time they are using their bikes on the road, they are in fact using the road, and paying no registration.

Does this mean I can now use my vehicle B on the road without paying registration?

They enjoy enough privileges when they take advantage of their prerogative to be idiots.

Sometimes you are using roads as well, as a pedestrian, and if you only cross them. Does that mean your legs have to pay rego as well?

You guys are not talking sense, a pushbike won't destroy our roads, cars and trucks do. Its simple, so I thought.

If we all use as often and as much pushbikes, our government would save millions....

I simply don't understand the hate for cyclists. I ride, but 90% of my journey is on paths. Sure, sometimes cyclists ride in places i would be scared to - and i think they're silly for it. But so what if you drivers (which most cyclists also are) have to pay attention or briefly slow down 20km/h to safely overtake. It's quite infrequent. I just don't understand. It's petty. Get over it. It's like frothing over people who take too long to exit the elevator. Or getting obsessively upset at people who take too long to cross a pedestrian crossing when they could have detoured 300m to that bridge or underpass.

Sheeit, i get more upset at people who press the pedestrian button at the lights and then walk without waiting for it. Causing traffic to stop for no-one when the little man does turn green. Where's the preaching over those inconsiderate or mindless pricks, eh?

    Geez.

The ONE area i have concern with is riders who don't have licenses and may not know the road rules. Insurance could also be a concern. But if a rider has a license, then everyone should shut the fvck up and deal with it. Insurance is a valid question that is worth pursuing - not in the interests of mad, selfish drivers who just want to drive without thinking or looking, but in the interests of everyone who is concerned about the inevitable accidents.

The legislation is poor. It gives no thought to the safety of the motorist. It is yet another trigger fingered response to an issue that can surely be solved through common sense. Perhaps that is the problem, they need to use common sense. What they have effectively done is protect one road user by endangering another. Before you ball squashing pushy riders go off the deep end, i think protection for cyclists is needed, no doubt, but more thought was needed during the draughting of this legislation.

From what i see, the everyday solo pushbike maniac is not the issue. It is the clubs or large groups that ride two or three abreast. I almost cleaned up a moron last month, if It wasn't illegal to run over these pests i would of gladly rolled over the top of this oxygen wasting tool. I was in a 110km zone and actually sloed down to a little over 60 km as did the car in front. There was about 20 in the group, both vehicles were stradling the center line when this headjob decided he would take a sharp swerve to the right. The car in front ended up on the other side of the road and i missed him by a poopteenth of an inch.

Did he give me a coutious wave of sorry mate didn't see you......no, a two fingered solute was all i got for sparing his life and endangering mine. So i not only think more education is needed for motorists, but also cyclists, because when we break it down to its simplist form........car beats bike, every time. Never seen a cyclist come out better off in that collision.

So common sense is needed from all parties. Drive slower when overtaking cyclists and give a little room, and ride single file FFS ! And learn to look over your shoulder before taking on a car.

Obviously there is a consistency problem with having to give a certain amount of space to cyclists, and not being able to cross double lines, on some roads. So now it's up to the driver to use their discretion to cross the double lines when they're passing a cyclist, so long as it's safe. Should be fine, unless we're assuming that motorists are inherently stupid.

Riding 3 abreast is already illegal, doesn't stop morons from doing it. Just like road rules in general don't stop morons from doing stupid crap. Police need to crack down on that (*)(*)(*)(*).

Wouldn't the building of comprehensive bike ways in all our towns and cities be a worthy national project? Then ban pushies from busy or narrow roads.

Similar thing happened to us on a country road. Doing the speed limit 100Km, and rounded a bend over the crest of a hill, and there were a group of these morons three abreast, riding in a group of about 20. I had to stop so severely, that my wheels locked up. I nearly killed them all, because I will refuse to endanger myself and my family by crossing over to the wrong side of the road and have a potential head-on for these idiots. My life verse theirs - they don't stand a chance

Bicycles should be banned from any road with a speed limit of 100km/h. It's illegal to drive too slowly because you become a hazard for other drivers. Bicycles are inherently too slow to not be a hazard on a 100km/h road.

Cyclists that insist on riding on the road when there are designated cycling lanes right next to them annoy me to no end. If there are no cycling lanes then I don't have a problem.

    Ever cycled a racebike?
Most cycle lanes are good for most of us, however on a fast bike going fast the road is the better option, most often anyway.
    With the rest I agree.

I`ve got an old army BSA, amongst the collection. Top speed 80K`s. I`d rather chew my own arm off than ride it on a 100kph highway. I`d feel like an idiohole.

It`s a safety and economy issue. A pushbike sharing the roads with cars & trucks, is an accident waiting to happen, and a dangerous liability on other road users. A pushbike is low visibility, travelling at a slower speed than the general traffic. A pushbike forcing other traffic to constantly brake and swerve, has a negative impact on both the safety, and the economy of all road users. This is 2014, not many of us have the luxury of moving at horse & cart speeds. I`ve done over 2 million K`s on motorbikes, and survival rule number one is to expect other road users not to see you, and they often don`t. A pushbike travelling at a fraction of the average speed, is infinitely more dangerous.

While pushbike riders may be able to delude that they are saving the environment, those of this shallow mindset, never think of the cost involved in forcing other traffic to slow / stop / start again. Pure selfishness.

Shallow mindset, 2 million ks on a bike? You must be kidding us......

One thing however is right, it is 2014, time to wake up. Pushbikes work well in many other countries, so why not in ours?

Because there are too many people like you, who hate change. People who cannot give an inch away of their lifestyle.

I have never come across someone, who is constantly against change.

And foreigners, and Global Warming, and Carbon Tax, and gays, and Muslims, and the Greens, and Labor, and and and...

    Mate, you suck...

Bicycles are great in the inner city, just look at Amsterdam. Morons riding in pelotons is the main problem.

Pushbikes are old technology. Going back to pushbikes is like saying "look at my new wooden shoes everybody !".
