The Free Market is stupid, idiotic, and dumb. why? cause we need some common sense regulations to protect our health, our environment, our jobs, our fiscal stability, etc. No Free Market can survive, as its own idiocy will collapse itself ones thing hit the fan. now yes, there can be too many regulations. But that doesn't make the idea of the Free Market any less dumb.
A total free market would be bad just as 100% socialism is bad. There does need to be rules to work out the kinks and inherent problems, but I'd say that the overall structure of the free market is more sound than the other extreme.
Well to be honest I guess it depends on what you say is a "free" market. Relatively speaking, basically any Western Country is a free market. You seem to be refering to an absolute anarcho-capitalist market.
Does the FDA give you more confidence in the food you eat or the medications you take? Honestly, I'm not so sure government regulations make us any safer. When you consider the amount of money corporations spend donating to politicians, or the number of former lobbyists and corporate board members who take turns running these federal agencies, it should raise suspicion in the earnestness of their oversight. The government regulation in place may create a false sense of security, which contains even more danger than a free market. When buying from an unregulated company, you know what you get yourself into - or at least you understand that you don't know what you've gotten yourself into. In our current state, when it's kind of hard to tell the difference between regulators and capitalist, you think you know, but you really have no idea. Why do you see so many ambulance chaser commercials for people hurt from FDA approved medications? "It ain't what you don't know that gets you into trouble. It's what you know for sure that just ain't so." - Mark Twain
absolutely. they do exaustive studies and trials to make sure drugs are safe. do you want YOUR kids taking drugs that havent been reviewed and studied????
I don't see anyone advocating for a no gov't reg nation. Many of us just urge the nation to keep free market "principles" at the forefront when creating and setting Gov't "policies."
I made a rhetorical question to begin my post, which I backed up with with an argument. Please go back and read the rest of what I wrote and you will get your answer. Plus, then you can make a reasoned response and we can have some dialogue.
Regulations need to exist not because the market is "dumb" but because the market can't or won't deal with them. Externalities like pollution and worker safety exist outside of the normal supply/demand/cost/profit model used by the market. Since the market itself cannot deal with them, it falls to non-market forces to do so.
A free market is vastly better at providing for the needs of the people than dicates of the president. The soviet union had total government control, and it imploded.
A free market is a market system in which the prices for goods and services are set freely by consent between sellers and consumers. It doesn't mean there are no rules (regulation). The problem lies in that approximately 70 percent of all federal government activity involves taking money from some Americans and giving it to other Americans. We are now no more than a socialist system. In fact, Vladimir Lenin once said that "without big banks, socialism would be impossible." "A wise and frugal government… shall restrain men from injuring one another, shall leave them otherwise free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned. This is the sum of good government." — Thomas Jefferson, First Inaugural Address, March 4, 1801
Those studies work so well that months to a year after medications are released I see ads for class action lawsuits against them.
Not so much food, but medications, yes. Read up on thalidomide for an example. That said, I do think that voluntary associations, like for example UL, would work as well as the FDA.
Who is pushing for a free market with zero regulation ? Btw, change "free market" with "democrat voters" and you sound like Jonathon Gruber.
I don't think you know the definition of socialism. Socialism is an economic system in which the means of production are collectively owned (de facto, government owned). Nothing more.
There are actually many varieties of socialism and not really a single definition. The systems can range from a libertarian socialism, social ownership, common ownership, state ownership, you are restricting the meaning to a strictly state ownership definition. I don't think you have actually looked at what the different socialist systems are in any depth.
many Libertarians and Conservatives in the USA want to do away with all regulations going back to the 1960s. that includes the Civil Rights Act.
Agreed, they have est. that 1 in 900,000 meals someone eats has been inspected in any manner. Absolutely no imported food is inspected unless there is a problem. What keeps our food safe is if their food makes people sick they wont buy it. Free market capitalism.
That assumes, of course, that consent is actually consent and not extortion. People consent to buy food, for example, but what are their alternatives? Market believers would say that consenting to starvation is an alternative to consenting to buy food. I don't.
Do you have a clue what it was like before the FDA? Do you know why the FDA was created? Do you think the government was just sitting around bored and decided to invent another way to consume your precious freedom? Read The Jungle by Upton Sinclair. If you were going to pick a government agency to point out as unecessary, the FDA was a terrible place to start.
