Why do you need so many flags everywhere? Is it insecurity? Flying a piece of coloured cloth outside your house doesn't magically make you a 'patriot', by the way.

    Settle for affirmative action astronaut?

I'd bet lunch the standards for US space cadets are substantially diminished for applicants of the ethnic and/or female quality.

That would be on par with liberalism's "fair" assessment standards would it not?

Is there even a shred of truth to this story. No more than I have read of this thread I am going to stick my neck out and bet this is another one of those whacky right wing made up fantasy scandals.

That's the opinion of a lot of America haters. Of course they tend to focus on the negatives in American history but never the good. How many Americans died to help give or preserve the lives of other peoples? Never mind the fact that countless countries are founded on the destruction of one culture by another, never mind the fact America didn't invent the idea of slavery or thousands died to help put an end to it. The way some carry on one would think we still have slavery maybe some should stop living in the past and realize the world has changed. But hey keep on hating, the color looks good on you.

Sadly the wars America has started since WW2 negates any good America may have done. 'We've bombed you into rubble, but here's a school in compensation' is hardly an example of the much touted American humanitarian altruism we've been fed over the years. Deal with the fact that America is no longer respected globally. No doubt you'll say, 'we don't care' and that, my friend, is the root of the problem.

This might be the greatest post I've read yet, and if I had the earnest belief that the Left feels this way I might not have left the party. But I do not think our compatriots on the Left, feel the same way you do. I don't think they view it as a healthy balance between what we had done right, and what we had done wrong. But rather, that there's a "social institution" seemingly "blocking" American progress(particularly of minorities) and this institution must be destroyed.

Destroying this institution, came from verbally assaulting Caucasian-Americans as the majority in the country, as well as the 1960s Immgiration policy of the New Left, which invited a mass immigration into the US, for the precise purpose of weakening US prestige at home and therefore abroad as well. The process had been slow and steady, but very progressive by every means of the word.

Today, in 2015 the process has been seen well. The Economic system, teetering by a thread. Families broken and divided, the elite who stir the movement are richer by the nanosecond. As in every Marxist society, this country too is being eventually broken and then centralized and controlled. The scenario in the US today is no different than Pre-Napoleon France, and the rise of Stalinist Russia. Same dysfunctional elements, same cry outs for a new regime.

The degeneration will continue, up until the point that the "allied coalitions" of the Left realize they're the ones in power(from a demographic standpoint) and at that point, they will bite off their own heads to finish the demolition of the US. Meanwhile, those who were wise to the impending collapse of this country can either rule over it with draconic rule or take their money and (*)(*)(*)(*).

I love this country, realizing the great need for improvement. But neither the Left nor the Right, shall be the saviors of this country. They are institutions of its destruction, the Left moreso than ever has taken this mantle and has taken it surprisingly well. I think I fear Liberals more than the Neo-Cons. War strategy can be changed, social devastation takes a LONG time. It took Germany until the mid-90's to recover from two world wars. Japan, Italy and France only recovered partially due to alliances with the West but also from lack of devastation.

The Liberal poses more harm IMO than the Neo-Con, but together they pose a terminal threat to the USA.

Slavery was legal in 75% of the world in the 1860's and legal in 90% of it in the 1700's. Colonialism, what about the Ottoman Empire which lasted until the end of WWI? What you mention was the normal operating procedures for most of the world back then. Even in the 1900's slavery was practiced in in China, Iraq, Iran, Ethiopia, Nigeria and many other countries. Saudi Arabia and Yemen didn't abolish slavery until 1962, Niger in 1960, UAE in 1963, Oman in 1970 and Mauritania made slavery illegal in 1981 becoming the last country to do so in the world.

Most people who complain about slavery in the U.S. ignores the rest of the world. They give the rest of the world a free pass concentrating only on the U.S. The United States joined around 75 other countries of the world abolishing slavery in the 1800's. The U.S. really was no better or worst than most of the countries.

You can focus on the good all you want. But WWII is getting to be something nobody has seen. What is left is the US being an apartheid state that only ended 2 decades after WWII ended. Their fail wars in Vietnam, Korea, Somalia, Iraq and Afghanistan that left behind countries in utter destruction and got the US the title of babykillers. And lets not forget the kidnapping and ruthless torturing of 100's of people without a trial. And even today... all you get to hear is how many black people got massacred in the back by some middle aged white racist cop.

And with that... yeah.. it is the worst of all the western nations.

The only thing that relieves me if this thread is knowing that even though it seems like many people here are for it.

Well, in your opinion what should/can America do to regain her trust among her Western Allies? What steps can we take to help make the world a better place, envisioned in the same lines as the Philosophers who helped shape both the US and the UK?

Oh I'm fully aware America has lost respect in the world under the last two administrations and we seem to be a nation in decline because of the decisions our leaders are making. We've got our problems but name a country that doesn't but then we know were not perfect. But I'm not going to listen to some foreigner bad mouth my country without defending it. See what matters is what it means to Americans not some foreigner. And you can say that's the root of the problem but foreigners we don't care.

The American flag has partly come to represent oppression. Diversity isn't an easy road. Its an ongoing messy process. I think the flag represents all of the good and bad its taken ( and will continue to take).
Visually I like the new flag design, but I don't think we need to be interlocking with the world. No way.

Sure, sure America is the source of all evil in the world. White cops hunt down minorities in the streets for fun and we broadcast it on television. And you opinion of this country rates somewhere around the level of toe jam on my gives a (*)(*)(*)(*) meter.

If you will google any astronaut that's been in the space station, each one has a flag corresponding to the nation they represent. The NASA logo remains the same, an American flag on their space suits remain the same. Nothing has changed. NASA does NOT support removing the American flag in lieu of some kind of galactic earth flag, that some college kids in Sweden designed.

The issue of the NASA flag may be a phony but the haters that crawl out from under rocks in order to kick at America are real enough.

It's a cliché but without the US the (mainly) western European whiners would all be speaking German, Russian or on their way to their mandatory bowing to Mecca seven times a day. In many cases they detest us not for what we are but for how lacking and dependent they themselves are.

Well, since NASA is interwoven with the space programs of many other countries (see Russia, International Space Station, etc) this doesn't bother me tremendously.

    Guess it would bother some.

    Blame Obama?
