Parents don't choose their kid's sexual orientation. BTW, every state will take your child away from you if you subject them to danger. That is what the snake oil known as "reparative therapy" is dangerous.

None of the major mental health or medical professional organizations, including the American Counseling Association, the American Psychiatric Association, the American Psychological Association, the National Association of Social Workers, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Medical Association, the National Association of School Psychologists, or the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy believe reparative therapy is effective and/or necessary and they caution that it can be very harmful resulting in an increased instance of depression and/or suicide

You seem to be obsessed with Fixed News. Does O'Reilly remind you of your daddy and get your juices flowing?

    No

Irrelevant. You are homosexual because you are ATTRACTED to men.

    There is no difference.

Nobody is bullying. Schools have codes of conduct. Being a bigot and demonstrating discriminatory behavior is a violation of said codes. We don't racism in schools either.

The closest Ron ever got to a psychiatrist was in the mental hospital as a patient.

    But "conversion therapy" is:

None of the major mental health or medical professional organizations, including the American Counseling Association, the American Psychiatric Association, the American Psychological Association, the National Association of Social Workers, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Medical Association, the National Association of School Psychologists, or the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy believe reparative therapy is effective and/or necessary and they caution that it can be very harmful resulting in an increased instance of depression and/or suicide

Ron, that is classical psychoanalysis, not aversion therapy. You obviously have no training in the field. Your stints in the mental wards don't qualify you as having any expertise as a clinician.

Just want to step in with a reminder that even in Oregon, the state at the center of this thread, no-one has made such camps illegal, even for kids. They just won't be able to operate under the guise of being licensed medical professionals.

As long as they make it clear they're just "faith healers", then they're good to go.

That is on a long list of why religion is something I not do not believe in, but also strongly disagree with in most cases.

It doesn't. you see, they are going to lose the magic dust that makes gay people straight and you know the five or six sad little people that identify as ex gay are likely going to contract something in a truck stop men's room and die off in a couple of months and Ohio wont be producing these silly political martyrs.

The movie, "A Clockwork Orange," shows the dangers involved with the toying of someone's mind.

The contest of who can be more pro-gay, who more likes gays and who will more beat up on people who don't has run amuck. The power the media has over people is amazing.

But, at least we should agree that anyone who was living as a heterosexual and latter as a gay, claiming they were confused of their orientation is an outright LIAR. They were deliberately lying to anyone of the oppose sex they were with, knowingly, deliberately and maliciously. They should be sued, if not prosecuted, for fraud.

It is being declared FACT that NO ONE has any psychological issues over their sexuality for which professional counseling on the topic should be illegal. If so, then the principles being declared as truisms must apply. Anyone claiming any sexuality confusion is a deliberate liar.

^ That message qualifies as the most hateful message of the month on the forum.

I often comment on just how powerful the media is over many people. You actually believe movies are reality, don't you?

I think on the face of it you are correct. They are liars and the outcome of such lies is often disastrous. That said, I think you have to ask why in the past so many people went this route.

Ask yourself why, if this is an effective psychiatric procedure, the self same practitioners who offer it don't also offer to turn straight people gay also? If it works one way then surely it would work the other?

If you can answer that question, you'll probably answer all your others.

My personal take, when it comes to practicing this stuff on kids, is that the real "patients" are often the parents who just can't face having a gay child. They're probably asking themselves where they went wrong and if it can be, somehow, fixed? I feel sympathy for them if that's the kind of thing that really bothers them but not to the extent that I would encourage them to ignore reality. Maybe they need therapy in coming to terms with the situation?

That's just hyperbole, it's also not true. This stuff isn't professional counseling, it's faith healing. Actually it can still be practiced as such, even in places where it's banned by licensed therapists. You just have to call yourself a "sex diviner" or something like that and you're good to go. Kind of like astrologers and taro readers can still offer their services but can't pass them off as legitimate medicine even though some people claim it really works for them.

Not necessarily but often the confusion arises from outside influences and pressures. I think the best cure will be time and the effects of recent legislation. Young gay people will grow up with more viable, positive, role models and realize that it's possible for them to advance into happy successful adulthood. Even though same-sex marriage is relatively recent, general acceptance of the fact that there are gay people has been on the rise for decades. I bet if you were to compare the incidences of beard marriages since the 1970s versus the 1950s (if that were in any way possible), you'd find a heck of a lot more of them took place back in the day. Wonder why?

This isn't to show my point to the OP's topic but it should be noted that...
The movie is based on Anthony Burgess's book with the last chapter omitted. The last chapter of the book Alex(the anti-hero in the book) completely reforms.
The author Burgess agreed to the last chapter being omitted because the publishing company stated that it would sell better at the time in the USA if it had a 'darker' ending.
Here's a link to only start looking it up about the last chapter being omitted:

While the research I have seen show scientists explaining sexuality as having a multitude of factors as to where sexuality originates...can't really blame a state for taking the safe route to actually considering banning pseduo-medical practices.

Wishing people who had homosexual sex and relationships to heterosexual sex and relations to quickly die of AIDS is as hateful as it gets. Your ethics are no different that those who want gays to die of AIDS. No difference whatsoever.

Yes, I can blame the state for injecting gay sloganism and PCism as rules that mental health professionals must comply with. There are not only multiple factors that can affect what relationships and sexuality a person desires, but also how a person can evolve across time. Victims of extreme sexual abuse, physical and psychological abuse with gender context - particularly as a child - can be really messed up in terms of sexuality including in the context.

The most common example is if a girl (or boy) was severely abused protractedly as a child by someone(s) of a particular gender. This can leave that child as an adult internally fearing, hating or wanting revenge against people of that gender - which then confuses sexual desires of a clash between embedded hate/fear versus normal relationship and sexual desires. As a result, the person can end up in a relationship on a certain gender that is not founded in desire, but out of fear/hate of the other gender. A woman can be a relationships only with other women because of her being horrifically abused by a man/men as a child - though then may be abusive in those lesbian relationships or such relationships are destined to fail over and over again. Yet what psychiatrist dare accept such a patient if still an underage teen as it would, essentially, equate to "conversion therapy" trying to help her deal with fear and hatred of men from past childhood abuse. The Stockholm Syndrome can come to apply to boys who were severely sexually and psychologically abused by a man/men as well for which the boy may come to gravitate towards being in a highly submissive or highly abusive relationship with another male, enter into gay relationships for the purpose of abusing those men, and other confusion-based conduct due to having been so psychologically damaged rather than a legitimate desire for romance, relationship and sex.

In this culture, EVERYONE pretends they are a psychotherapists analyzing themselves and everyone else if as they have a clue what they're talking about. It chokes the media, how people tend to think now and even clutters this forum with crap, for which predictably politicians jump right in.

This is how the NEW slogan gay activists created not long ago declaring that everyone - 1oo% of people - are born to a specific gender orientation and that everyone REALLY knows what that is - making up excuses for the millions and millions of exceptions such as bisexuals and people whose gender-relationships and sexuality changes over time. In real terms, it is PC politicians declaring that slogan is a no-exceptions 100% fact - and requiring psychiatrists and psychologists follow that slogan in their practice - meaning denying actually therapy that is meaningful.

The limited number of psychiatrists who actually accept patients with extreme sexuality issues would assure you that these can be intensely complex and challenging patients, particularly if there was extreme sexual and gender-related abuse in the person's early childhood. Nor is it just a question of is the person then happy or not. Such people as adults can be highly violent, abusive themselves or extremely self destructive.

I can't remember the name of the serial predator of boys who would horrifically sexually torture his male children victims for weeks on end and then let them go, and when finally caught declaring his goal was to turn those boys into monsters in their adult life - basically to turn them all into him as adults. People and politicians who lived safe, generic and ordinary childhoods have no clue what involved in sexuality and gender issues that severely abused children face when they reach puberty. Government declaring they will take away the license of mental health care professionals who do not address such patients in a way the government likes is a formula for disaster. Everyone really does NOT live to their true gender-relationship/sex desires of their clear headed and free-mind choice. For many, that was stripped away from them by highly abusive and tragic events in their childhood.

Meanwhile, coversion therapy for children from male to female or female to male is covered under Obama care. Converting gay boys into heterosexual women or lessbians into heterosexual men.

There is a distinction to be made, between gay, and transgendered. They may be grouped together politically, but they are not the same things.

Also, there is a difference between treating a person who is transdgendered... versus compelling/forcing them to undergo conversion therapy (which has been PROVEN to be harmful).

    I'd agree, but I didn't do that.

Except the ethics you stated aren't mine. You just posted a strawman as per usual.

The wife of the Mayor of NY City used to be a lesbian. A reporter assumed that she is bisexual. She denied that and stated she is heterosexual. It's fascinating that she is never discussed. She said she was a lesbian and became heterosexual when she met her husband.

I have known several people that have switched to either the same or the opposite sex because they fell in love. I'd consider them bisexual as well.

That's what the reporter assumed also. She denied being bisexual and was adamant about being heterosexual. I'll try to find the article.
