Which are better, raw or fried oysters? I have of course had both. never had a "bad" raw oyster. But did have some crappy friend ones. please vote in this amazing poll and tell you stories about good and bad, raw and fried oysters. - - - Updated - - - best oysters I have had were in Ireland and San Anselmo, California. can't recall where the best fried oysters were, but the worst were on City Island in The Bronx. totally cheepo supremo. I think the place burned down during Hurricane Sandy.
lol!!!!!! where were your best? I had great ones in Nova Scotia, Ireland, Grand Central Oyster Bar, Vancouver,
I used to love to eat a dozen raw oysters, usually with a tart wine, like Chablis. But, today the risk of getting hepatitis is too great, so I eat them fried, when I eat them at all. The oceans are so filthy and (*)(*)(*)(*)ed up with pollution now, I'm just about completely off all seafood entirely. I gave up on the Gulf of Mexico after the oil-gush disaster five years ago, and I have avoided seafood from the Atlantic for longer than that. So-called "farmed" seafood is almost more filthy than anything else, and I won't touch it. The last straw was the horrific nuclear disaster at Fukushima, Japan! Now, even though "they" are trying to cover it up, seafood from the Pacific is not fit to eat, either, and that is a heart-breaker. I used to love nothing better than wild-caught King Salmon from Alaska. Anyway, that's all over for me, too. If you want something for your love-life, try eating lots of organic pumpkin seeds... lots of zinc!
Between raw and fried, raw are the best. That said, grilled oysters are better than either raw or fried. You eat them like raw, but they have a better texture. They taste better than fried.
Traditionally in Italy we eat raw oysters, without doubt. In particular we eat them adding lemon and pepper. Usually it's advisable to eat raw oysters when they are quite cold [less than 10°].
Raw oysters when drunk in a shooter. Otherwise fried. Fried kind of gives you a one-sized-fits-all taste, not the subtle variations of a raw oyster -- but I don't LIKE the taste of raw oysters very much, so the artistry is lost on me.
I prefer fried oysters over fresh oysters but I always have a dozen cans of smoked oysters in the cupboard.
Boiled and ideally steamed. Never had fried and I prefer clams over oysters. Raw oysters are quite dangerous now. Oysters are filter feeders so take in everything in the water. There's a lot of bad stuff in that water including little things that want to eat your brain, literally. There is a reason for the warning on every menu about raw oysters. Steamed oysters, clams, crab and lobster is the best. Baked lobster ain't bad either.
I love BBQ oysters the best. The nice thing is that they have their own built in timer. You put them on the grill, and when they pop open, they're done.
Raw! Fried is okay, grilled is okay, in a roast is okay, Love some oysters Rockafeller, but raw is the way to go. Raw oysters are the essence of the ocean. If you visit the No. California wine country and love oysters, plan a stop at the Hog Island Oyster Company in Marshall California. The oysters are fresh out of Tomales Bay and are fantastic. https://hogislandoysters.com/
I have had both. Fried oysters are too easy to mess up. They tend to get really rubbery and chewy when overcooked. I personally prefer raw.
There are so many different kinds of oysters that to make rules about raw or 'fried' is pointless. However, here's one of my favourite methods which sits halfway between raw and cooked. Skin and seed a greek cucumber, In a food processor blend cucumber with cottage cheese, lime juice, black pepper&/or chilli. Shuck oysters making sure to keep their juices. Cover each oyster with the cucumber/ cottage cheese mix . Place under a hot grill until cheese/cucumber mix starts to brown leaving the oysters themselves only ever warm but never cooked.. Sprinkle with chopped parsley of dill. Serve with lime wedges.
That's how I've had them and I don't like them - even when the others at the table are raving about how good they are. They are like balls of fish flavoured snot as far as I'm concerned.....
Grand Central Oyster Bar, Vancouver.. oh yes.. The best.. but I love raw oysters from Bull's Bay or Applachiacola..
This can happen about oysters, it's absolutely subjective. Oysters are a valid food and with nice nutritional qualities ... but a person can like them or not on a subjective base.
That is because they are cooking them in accordance with the breading and not the oyster--basically cooking them with their eyes so they look pretty. I think it is better to fry them until they just start to turn brown and then throw them into the oven to finish. It gets the breading right, keeps the oyster from being overcooked, and pulls some of the oil off. Not a fan of raw oyster. All you are really getting is the flavor of the garnish. It is like people who rave on lobster. It isn't the lobster they like, but the butter/garlic sauce they dip it in they like.
Raw oysters are not dangerous due to the brain eating amoebas (which are fresh water organisms). Raw oysters are dangerous in terms of Vibrio bacteria (which is often called "flesh eating" bacteria). Basically speaking, if you are healthy otherwise (no immune problems), raw oysters aren't dangerous. Menus just put that there to CYA.
I prefer oyster without the toppings. At most, I would put a small squeeze of lemon juice and a little pepper.
When I eat them raw I prefer heat, but it i snot something that happens often. I do not live where the raw oysters would be what I would deem non-toxic
