Did Attorney General Jeff Sessions break any laws? No, but possibly. Was Sessions guilty of a misleading statement to Congress? Yes. Was Sessions guilty of bad judgment? Yes. Did Sessions lack the capacity to give a completely accurate answer to the Senate confirmation hearing? Yes. For those reasons Sessions should resign because they create an atmosphere of doubt as to Sessions' ability and trustworthiness.

Here is what happened. On Feb. 28, 2016, Sessions became the first Senator to endorse Donald Trump. On March 3, Trump announced that Sessions will lead his national security advisory committee. During the week of July 18, Sergey I. Kislyak, the Russian ambassador, was among a small group of diplomats who chatted with Sessions after an event during the Republican National Convention.

On July 22, WikiLeaks posted 20,000 emails sent or received by D.N.C. officials. On July 27, during a news conference, Trump asked, “Russia, if you’re listening, I hope you’re able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing” in an apparent reference to Hillary Clinton’s deleted emails.

On, Sept. 8, Sessions met privately with Kislyak in his Senate office. In early December, U.S. intelligence agencies concluded that Russia was behind the D.N.C. hacking and that it took the action in favor of Mr. Trump. Dec. 29, Obama announces sanctions against Russia for trying to influence the election. Flynn discussed sanctions with Kislyak in a phone call, according to officials who saw a transcript of the wiretapped conversation. On Dec. 30, uncharacteristically, Putin did not retaliate against the sanctions giving rise to the allegation that a deal was consummated.

On Jan. 10, 2017, at the confirmation hearing for attorney general, Senator Al Franken, a Democrat, asked Sessions what he would do if “there is any evidence that anyone affiliated with the Trump campaign communicated with the Russian government in the course of this campaign.” Sessions replied: “I have been called a surrogate at a time or two in that campaign, and I didn’t have — did not have communications with the Russians, and I’m unable to comment on it.”

In January President Trump was given a comprehensive summary of the contents of Flynn’s phone calls with the Russian ambassador, a source told Fox News. Feb. 13, Flynn resigned.

On March 1, Sessions says in a statement, “I never met with any Russian officials to discuss issues of the campaign. I have no idea what this allegation is about. It is false.”

On March 2, Sessions admits, prior to endorsing Trump and becoming a member of his election campaign, he has never met the Russian ambassador. Conclusion, the only time he met with the ambassador was during his involvement with the Trump election campaign.

March 2, Sessions announced he is recusing himself from any investigations related to the Trump campaign.

Consequently, while it is unclear whether or not Sessions broke any laws, that possibility remains. However, clearly Sessions is guilty of improprieties and an unwillingness to be forthcoming. For these reasons he should resign. His trust with the American people has been compromised.

Any suggestion from someone who is 100% against you shouldn't be taken seriously.

Let the investigation happen first, then a determination should be made with all the facts. Trial by media is not a good trend, and I'm a Liberal.

Trump and his admins need to stop pandering to these crybabies. If you spoke to the Russians, tell the left, "Hell yeah I talked to the Russians. What are you going to do about it."

With some of the GOP so sensitive about the Russian collusion issue,
I could see an activation of that mechanism called Checks and Balance.

I disagree. I think he should hang in there. Let the Trump Admin's stink seep deep into the GOP's pores until it's so deep that they have no choice but to appoint and independent investigator. It's obvious that a thorough and unbridled investigation needs to be conducted. The Republicans have nothing to hide, right?

If he had said that at the Senate hearing, he wouldn't be in this mess.

Sessions answered the question correctly and didn't lie about anything. This is deplorable behavior by democrats. He should give them the finger and ignore them.

Well that's what completely innocent people would do.

Instead of doing that, Trump's people seem to think lying through their teeth is a better option. I wonder why that is?

    He won't resign.

He will stonewall it like Nixon until his position becomes untenable.

Sessions' sins (if there are any) are a fraction of previous AG's. Eric Holder was scum.

But Mr. Holder is not on the hot seat, Mr. Sessions is.
Hence, another problem for the Trump Administration.
I don't know if scum is above or below......in bed with the Russians.
Depends on if one loves America or Russia.

You might want to add this to your timeline...
The FBI doesn't confirm or deny anything from ongoing investigations, but they have been investigating Sessions since last spring… because of Russian contacts.

The stench is getting much smellier.

Nonsense. He did nothing wrong and he is going to be a fabulous AG. Sore Loser Democrats are still trying to re-litigate the last election and they still have nothing but pee-gate.

    Sad!

And God help Obama if it is ever learned that he, as a private citizen with no security clearance, is advising/strategizing about illegal leaks of classified information.

I don't know if he should or shouldn't. I think as time goes by, that will become more apparent one way or the other. There has been so many demonstrations, protests, animosity towards Donald Trump, someone like me has a hard time trying to distinguish between actual wrong doing or partisan rancor against anyone associated with Trump because he won. I think the only way to tell the difference is to wait and see.

There has been so many accusations thrown against any and all Trump nominations one doesn't know what is true and what is not. How much is vengeful hate filled mud slung because one side lost which expected to win and how much is real that should be taken seriously. Those of us in the middle of all of this don't know what and how much is polarized partisan politics that has descended upon us today and what isn't.

I think there has been so much of this going on against Trump and his nominees, real and imagined, that those who aren't die hards in either camp, pro or anti Trump, have gotten to the point they just shrugged their shoulders and ignore what is happening in Washington. Forget politics, too much rancor and hate from both sides, let's get on with the more important things in life. Such as March Madness, the NBA playoffs, baseball, let those Republicans and Democrats battle it out with their hate like they do in the MMA or professional wrestling. A lot of us just don't want to hear it anymore.

It is this apathy setting in, the tiredness of hearing all these tirades from the Democrats that may be the biggest danger to this republic. It's is beginning to come across as the boy who cried wolf once too often. We just don't know what to believe. So we may begin to believe nothing at all and ignore everything political.

Exactly. Whether or not AG Sessions did anything wrong will be determined. The AG has stated that he would recuse himself of any involvement with anything which occurred during the campaign. That is sufficient. Let the investigation proceed, and stop trying to convict the man prior to knowing anything about what took place.

No, he should say he won't be involved in anything having to do with investigations into activities which occurred during the campaign. Which is exactly what he's done. Let the investigation play out.

Nope. The Democrats are desperate. Lying and abusing government to destroy a good man that did nothing wrong in order to hurt Trump.

I am entitled to my opinion and you have to admit the facts are very suspicious. Moreover, I am not suggesting a trial. His trust with the American people has been compromised. That is a legitimate concern the media is entitled to pursue.

Sure looks like Schumer didn't have his country on his mind while having coffee and donuts with Putin a few years back.

Actually looks like the two of them were having a fun time together.
