I believe there was an increase in assassination threats against president Obama compared to previous presidents(here's a source for discussion sake https://www.dailykos.com/story/2012...a-Is-the-Most-Threatened-President-In-History), but I also believe that this had more to do with the evolution of the internet than anything else. Now days all someone has to do is log onto twitter to send a threatening letter.

So in my opinion Obama wasn't really in greater danger, I just think getting threatening messages across has become a lot easier

I remember once Obama was left with an armed security guard in an elevator. This was an assasination threat for him, I am sure there were many others.
