You think that Scotland have their own language? Next thing you will be saying is that Latin is England's first language

It is all phony. US has had a history of lying and not keeping its word. Korea knows this. Something is cooking.

To us this would seem logical, there's absolutely no chance South Koreans would agree to be ruled by Kim, but I suppose Kim thinks he's doing a great job, or maybe he thinks he can win them over with his wonderful peaceful reunification and denuclearization plans.

we will see, my guess is the end deal is much like the Iran deal, which will be good and too Trump's credit.... if he doesn't blow it - time will tell

Yes, a dialect equivalent to saying that Latin is a language used in England. Visit Scotland and you won't hear anyone talking in any other language than English. You may hear the occasional Polish or Rumanian

I thought Gaelic was more widely spoken than Scots?

Back on this Korean deal, some think it all depends on whether Kim can transition to a less tyrannical system, that he can do so without provoking either a military coup or domestic unrest leading to a revolution:

agree, I was very upset with republicans for poisoning the Iran deal while it was in the works with their open letter

if dems in congress do the same to Trump that repubs did tro Obama, that would be.... SAD!

Distinguishing between a language and a dialect is subjective, it has been said the only difference between the two is that only languages have a navy. Specialists in the subject suggest the difference is in the degree of original etymology, for example, Basque is a language with highly unique etymology, nobody knows where it came from, French (which has a navy) shares a lot of etymology with latin, Catalonian (no navy), shares etymology with Spanish, how about Scots, does it share etymology with English?

Back on the Korean issue I wonder if Kim simply realized he was on an unwinnable course, that the future of North Korea was full of too much hardship if he had to maintain a nuclear program, the material, technology, expertise and equipment too great a drain on increasingly limited resources, global isolation, increasing sanctions, and especially China's growing interest in western trade all added up to more difficulties, he may have realistically gone on a few more years with missile launches and nuclear detonations, but these would entail continued hardships for North Koreans (we don't know how well they're handling this) and an increasing risk this could lead to conflagration (at least until Trump is gone). I think it is highly unlikely Trump would have backed down on the sanctions by the time his successor got elected if Kim kept it up, and that maintaining the course would have required continuous demonstrations of improved North Korean capabilities, bigger detonations, greater international ostracism, bigger joint US-South Korean military exercises, longer range missile testing, increased Japanese militarization, at all along the risk some test or launch would trigger a conflagration. Kim is a ruler for life, he couldn't look forward to a lifetime of living under the threat of Armageddon and ultimately he could never prevail, North Korea would never have the capacity to defeat the US in war, Kim could devastate South Korea and maybe two or three big cities in the US, but North Korea would be literally pulverized.

On the other hand, having accomplished a somewhat credible nuclear capability, Kim can make a grand bargain. Peaceful reunification of the peninsula would be a great achievement, especially if this entails bringing to the North all we see in the South. This will be laborious and expensive, it will require substantial change in every aspect of North Korean life; the military will suffer a significant diminution in importance and Kim's regime will need to substantially revamp, it's centralized system of government will have to become representative, fundamental rights will have to be guaranteed by an independent judiciary that reliably enforces a popularly supported constitution and system of laws that reflects the collective will while also fostering the certitude of outcomes in contract and business disputes necessary for a prosperous society. Absent this, any expenditures in integrating North and South would be useless as investment in factories and installations in the North would be held back for fear of expropriation, censure or closure without justification or any legal recourse.

I don't know how Kim will accomplish this sort of transition, but would expect any signs to be evident in rather arcane domestic judicial reforms, things like changes that affect the qualification of judges, the sentencing of political critics, their penal code, freedom of expression and other fundamental rights would be key. If there are changes here I would think Kim is sincerely supporting "peaceful reunification". All of the foregoing is premised on the notion Kim seeks to accomplish the peaceful reunification of North and South Korea with US financial support. All Trump wants is for Kim to get rid of his nuclear capabilities. I think a prosperous and "westernized" Korean peninsula is a good outcome, if this entails withdrawing US forces, it is still a good deal, if this involves increased Chinese influence over the region it depends on many factors and first among them is South Korean opposition.

That attitude was a reasonable response to the frequent and highly provocative war-games with SK, and as a good leader should do, KJU was laying it on the line that he would be no push-over?

War games with SK have been going on ever since NK was pushed out after they invaded SK and in case you didn't know the war never ended. It's an armed truce on a hair trigger.

The US/SK "war games" are by now customary practice, they serve a useful purpose as it is anticipated forces from these two countries will need to highly coordinate their response to North Korea's attack. Until Kim actually starts making tangible and verifiable steps towards his promised denuclearization, things remain they way they've been.

Quite so, which is why NK has found it so provocative, and felt it necessary to prepare for the worst by upping the nuclear stakes. At the end of the day I personally don't think the US will allow unification of north and south Korea, so that makes the denuclearization promise debatable.

Provocative? Preparing for NK to invade AGAIN is not provocative it's preventative. Or maybe liberals revisionist history claims SK invaded NK.

This is funny, but then again it is the NYTimes. First of all Washington's word means nothing, and what Kim doesn't want is to end up like Ghaddafi. There might be some weight though with Russia's guarantees towards N. Korea's security in the road map, so all is not lost.

As for closing down the underground nuclear test site, well according to the ever knowledgeable Moon of Alabama, the site has no more use and has to be closed. There are two new testing sites in the making.

Now if you think Kim is taking Washington for a ride, guess again? If Moon knows what's going on, then the Pentagon know's as well. It's the American people that are being taken for a ride. Well look, how else can Trump get the Nobel Peace Prize?

Trump won't get the Nobel Prize, that's ridiculous, even if Kim agreed to completely denuclearize and submitted to the most intrusive, pervasive and continuous verification which completely satisfied Trump's most unreasonable demands; even if Kim accepted very insignificant concessions regarding the lifting of sanctions until Trump had absolute certitude all North Korean nuclear weapons, any capacity to produce more or acquire the means to do so, had been irretrievably removed; and even if North and South Korea were cooperatively engaging in tangible and effective steps towards demilitarization and economic integration -Trump would never be awarded the Nobel Prize.

Personally, I don't trust NK to give up his nukes and I don't trust the US to keep its word if a deal is brokered. Both have the same low credibility

For someone so "woke" you have an odd habit of taking politicians words to heart.
