Personal responsibility is not something the left is keen on.

Health at everysize size is comical

Is it genetics? Or that 3rd cake and 12th can of coke that's causing it?

I find it interesting that there's actually a case where those on the Left are more likely to believe something is caused by genetics, rather than social influences and environmental factors.

    It's complicated.

The thermodynamics of weight management are indeed straightforward, consume more calories than you require and you will gain weight, fewer calories and you will lose weight but that's only the tip of the iceberg.

By all means blame the individual for being fat, but if that doesn't help to address the situation and attendant health problems then I'm not sure how helpful that is.

I suppose the key question is, does one group or the other have a better track record of managing their weight ? If conservatives, who blame themselves have a much lower incidence of obesity then perhaps self-blaming is effective. OTOH if there's no statistically significant difference, or blaming obesity on factors beyond one's control is more effective then perhaps that should be the preferred approach.

The one thing which seems clear is that many (most ?) developed countries have a growing issue with obesity and the increased incidence of Type 2 Diabetes in particular is a problem which threatens to overwhelm healthcare budgets.

Do you believe irrational obsessions with simplistic and divisive political labels is genetic or a matter of personal responsibility?

Its because of the GMOs, The aspartame in diet coke, the addictive sugar in real coke, McDs for having toys in the happy meals and a playground for kids. Blah blah blah.

Genetics are just a social construct. Just cause your genetics say youre going to be fat, you still may have a skinny person on the inside which you identify with, but that's because they are stuck in a fat roll. When cops pull me over cause they are looking for a 400 lbs man in a burglary of Chic-fil-a nuggets, I ask them why they felt it was ok to assume my weight and that I identify as a 185lbs Mr Olympian Beast. I am oppressed and I think the government should pay for my body reconstructive surgery to turn my outsides into what I feel I am on the inside.

Its the great thing about capitalism, there is no shortage of food. Even our poorest can be the fattest in the world.

I’m not what you’ve assumed I am (though the presumption supports my point). Are you capable of addressing my question or should we just take your evasion as an implicit confession?

    OK I'll answer it properly

It's not healthy for either side to obsess and both sides are guilty of excessive stereotyping BUT when it comes to personal responsibility I truly believe Republicans have the edge. I'm a Republican and my family is fat but I am not due to my harassment my brother dropped from 18 stone to 12 stone a few years ago and he's happy. My sister tells me it's genetic (She's over 20 stone!) whilst she eats that 3rd cake!

I weigh 9 stone the fat gene must have skipped me and nothing to do with me swimming 3 times a week, cycle 30 miles+ and walk a dog.

Oh, stop injecting some reality into the "liberals = irresponsible" bash fest.

If there is any reliable data, and that is questionable, it indicates that liberals lead healthier and less obese lives than conservatives. I am sure, though, conservatives can search the web and can find the exact opposite, just like with any other politically controversial point. That's the world of alternative facts we live in, thanks to the internet, where any political hack can publish their gospel.

Some would argue that you could use the time it takes to swim, cycle and walk the dog to work more and be more productive. That would increase economic output.

You realize I am being facetious :).

    Thank you.

I think you’ve missed my point. I was objecting to the entire impression of there being only two classes of people and the generic application of opposing characteristics against everyone. Democrat or Republican, liberal or conservative, left or right, us or them – none of these labels are definitive, consistently defined and applied or apply to everyone anyway (even if you’re limiting yourself to the USA ;) ). Trying to draw any kind of statistical significance from these perceived dividing lines strikes me as fundamentally flawed, even before the presumption that they’re causal factors rather than just different consequences of deeper underlying causes.

In my experience, the main reasons this kind of assessment is used has nothing to do with science, understanding or trying to improve everything, it’s all about creating and feeding the social divisions for partisan political or financial benefit. And I have to say that, though you’re far from alone, you appear to be guilty of that (hence your instinctive response to my initial challenge). I just think it’s worth stepping back and taking an honest look at the field you choosing to play in.

I don't know about the republican democrats aspect, but I know that my wife and I can go into a family restaurant, order one meal and split it and still take some home. What is even worse, is that we see other people in the restaurant eat the whole meal by themselves.

Some people say you are wasting food when you leave it on the plate. What is really wasting food is to put it in your body when you do not need it.
