Reaching for the stars: China creates nuke-powered fake sun that burns hotter than the real deal
    Published time: 14 Nov, 2018 17:53
[IMG]Chinese researchers pushing to find a major clean energy source have created an incredible artificial sun that can reach temperatures of 100 million degrees Celsius – a heat so intense it makes the real sun seem merely lukewarm.
The earth-based solar simulator has reached mind-bending temperatures of 100 million degrees Celsius, the research team announced Tuesday. Now, that’s hot. For comparison, the real sun’s core is about 15 million degrees Celsius.

The Institute of Plasma Physics, affiliated with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said it has been testing an “artificial sun,”known as the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST). The sci-fi-sounding contraption has been designed to replicate the way in which the star at the center of our solar system generates its colossal energy.

EAST is a large, donut-shaped machine set inside a round box. Located on Science Island in Eastern China's Anhui Province, the project is using nuclear fusion to create immense heat; it costs a massive $15,000 a day just to turn on the machine.

The goal of the EAST is to understand nuclear fusion and to one day use it as an alternative source of power on Earth. This could pave the way for using clean energy – currently, nuclear energy created through fission leaves a long-lasting toxic waste.

The news comes soon after China announced its plans to roll out a series of fake moons to illuminate urban streets at night. The ‘moons’ are actually satellites, and the hope is that they can replace standard street lighting and save energy.

Where are we in all of this? We are lagging behind.

    Your thoughts?

Does it have a negative energy output compared to inputs?

Science tends to be global and transnational in nature, and this looks very much like a scientific endeavor. I don't see this as some kind of national competition. It was silly enough when the US and USSR treated space travel like that.

We must have made it to the moon as quickly as we did by not competing. That's why we rule space. Because we didn't compete.

What are you talking about. We use Russian Rockets to launch our satellites and can not make it to the Space Station without hitching a ride on a Russian Rocket.

How does that make us "rulers of space" ?

Guaranteed, or it would be powering super-secret underground military bunkers instead of dazzling us in the news.

We have the most satellites. We control virtually all space traffic.

Oh, and does SpaceX ring a bell? Amazon is jumping on board as well I hear.

And while NASA may uses Russian rockets to fly astronauts to the space station, Russian itself is number 3. As a general matter, we lauch more rockets into space than anyone.

List of countries with the most operational satellites in orbit:
    1. United States, with 568satellites
    2. China, with 177 satellites
    3. Russia, with 133 satellites
    4. Japan, with 56 satellites
    5. United Kingdom, with 42satellites
    So yeh. We rule space.

What are the chances of it igniting the planet if containment fails?

It's a pity European 'scientists' (quotation marks to indicate that I'm using the word loosely - thought I'd better explain that? ) haven't deployed the LHC for this kind of useful stuff rather than making atoms hurtle around colliding with each other, and looking for the Higgs-Boson particle accelerato . . .

Perhaps you could point out the "useful" stuff in the link?

Yep, the Chinese definitely have ambitions to do great things.
Fusion will change everything. Or at least it should change everything. It's important enough to be everyone's primary focus.

Well something like the Chinese have done - renewable energy ffs? Do I really need to explain that? :wall:

Yea, perhaps you should try and explain that! It's not renewable energy. It's scientists doing research, the science that you continually dismiss as a waste of money. I hope you noticed that the Chinese are using nuclear material to generate the heat, the same type of physics that is being explored in the LHC

I know that you have zero knowledge of anything scientific but I am really surprised that you support these scientists involved in tokamaks. The LHC is all about creating particles from energy (E=mc2) and creating particles from the collision of other particles eg fusion. The article in the OP is the same story that was published in 2013.

No actual progress has been made, but more government funding is being requested.

What, you C&P something from a 'science' magazine whose very survival depends on **** like that and expect me to believe it . . . just because you do?? They're charlatans masquerading as scientists and they laugh at people like you who refuse to believe they'd do such a thing; they're playing at 'science' ffs. God this is so depressing.

What are you going on about now? I haven't C & P anything. I gave you a link to an article published in 2013 that gave the same information as the OP. Perhaps you think that 2018 and 2013 is the same year. You clearly don't know what nuclear fusion is

If you didn't C&P it then you just typed what you've read somewhere or other. This is the age of the liar, don't you know that? Politicians, government departments and agencies, newspapers, broadcasters, public servants etc - they all effing lie through their teeth, so what makes you think the scientist community doesn't?

As I have already pointed that your knowledge of any science is lacking, but are you saying that nuclear fusion is fake?

I've heard of nuclear power stations ffs. My brother in law designed the roofs and drainage of Dungeness A and B.

That was not the question I asked. They are not nuclear fusion reactors. So back to the question, are you saying that nuclear fusion is fake?

No, bcause the results are around for all to see. I didn't know a power station wasn't nuclear fusion,

The reason I asked is because the research in the OP that you said was useful is about nuclear fusion (particles combining). Nuclear power stations use a process called nuclear fission (particles breaking down) much like a nuclear bomb. The LHC also is also carrying out experiments involving nuclear fusion (and other experiments). The article in the OP is dated 2018 and the scientists are requesting more money but no obvious progress has been made since 2013. Nuclear fusion as an energy source has been talked about for over 50 years and no practical progress has been made

Although I do applaud the research it is one of those things where I wish it were being carried out on a different planet

Maybe even in a galaxy far far away.........
