In order for socialized medicine to work in the U.S., and that's what it is, not "medicare for all" which equates to a lie of omission designed to fool the weak-minded, several drastic changes would need to occur in our social policy, some of which involve an unacceptable sacrifice of personal freedom IMO.

    1. The central government would need to step into a "preventive medicine health police" role, or at the very least, the availability and individual costs of public health benefits would have to be severely balanced as against individual choices. This is highly troublesome and subject to near instant abuse as once the system is in place, collectivists, dishonest vote farmers, will begin howling that health care is a "basic right" that cannot be regulated against individual choices. "I should be able to smoke, drink a pint of vodka a day, and eat all the processed carbs and sugar I want and still receive full coverage because healthcare is a BASIC RIGHT for each and every pound of the 300 pounds of me!"

    2. The food-related portions of our central safety nets would have to be completely reworked, and this would become subject to the chicanery of the lobbying process even moreso than now. "But the processed, ground rice in our cereal is the same composition of rice as whole rice and we even add "nutrients" to it, we should be on the permitted list!"

    3. Certain expensive services and procedures would have to be age-capped in a continuing tech boom, then get ready for the "But even if it adds only another 2 years of life, my 85 year old Mother should get her BASIC RIGHT to $300k cardiac bypass!" (or 100 other very expensive procedures exacerbated by especially long and complicated hospital stays for the elderly). I trust central government to impartially create and adjust such ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY age caps as far as I can spit.

    4. All the many reasons why government is a necessary evil and not an efficient, rational, moral provider of goods and services would continue to apply to healthcare. Government and its denizens are PROVEN to be INCOMPETENT, WASTEFUL, and CORRUPT to degrees far greater than the private sector. Is there incompetence, waste and corruption in the private sector? Of course there are! but not remotely close to the same degree, and those negative traits are managed by competitive forces and voluntary choice transactions. Government is not inherently regulated in this way, quite the opposite.

Our prevailing culture in the U.S. is way too decadent, effeminate, irrational and privileged for socialized medicine to have a snowball in hell's chance of working.

do you pay full price for everything, have you never tried to pay less, taken any deductions on your tax returns, tried to weasel out of a ticket or used one of those 'cards' from a cop friend to avoid the ticket, settled debt for less than full value, bought something online to avoid sales tax, didn'r report the income from your garage sale or that old iphone you sold to a buddy... everybody does their part to 'scam' the government, so don't deny it, we already know you do ;)

If everyone has healthcare, people will actually go see their doctor and health costs go down because there is better preventative care before things get really bad. You pay for healthcare one way or another unless you're poor and then you have Medicaid anyways so they might as well have a 5% national sales tax to fund healthcare and a portion of income and property tax. You could argue that poor people don't deserve free healthcare, but you pay for them now anyways.

In an effort to discredit universal healthcare, you're overstating a fact.

My brother-in-law is a Canadian physician, and his good reason he'll keep practicing in Canada rather than the U.S.; COMPENSATION

how would joining the rest of the developed world in providing single payer healthcare for US citizens, hasten the collapse of the federal government?

My point exactly. Doctors come here for the education, they practice for a short time and move out. In the near future, this country will face a shortage of doctors. Obamacare forced thousands of small clinics to be sold out to giant corporations which cut the doctors pay for services dramatically not to mention the time per patient per visit. If you have yet to be affected by this you will. My sons' next door neighbor is a heart surgeon in Dallas. His income over the last eight years has slowly been cut in half. The only way he makes up for it is with 60+ hour work week. My own family physician now makes half of what I did selling printing paper.

the data shows that single payer systems provide better care at a fraction of the price compared to our for profit system.

The Raccoon Council has found that lockdown lids on trashcans create excessive, unnecessary expense without any measurable increase in keeping scavengers out of one's garbage.

You may think it's fruitless to post prices, but that was in a direct response to the OP, who seemed to feel Medicare for All was the gateway to get...posted prices.

no, less stupid socialism(Medicare for All) to create capitalism which is more sensible starting point than trying to create it from the socialist mess we have now.
