    Chicago Police superintendent Eddie Johnson called out celebrities, news commentators and even presidential candidates on Thursday for their decision to amplify coverage of what he said was the “phony attack” against “Empire” star Jussie Smollett.

    “The accusation within this phony attack received national attention for weeks,” Johnson told reporters during a press conference. “Celebrities, news commentators and even presidential candidates weighed in on something that was choreographed by an actor.

    “This announcement today recognized that ‘Empire’ actor Jussie Smollett took advantage of the pain and anger of racism to promote his career,” Johnson continued, adding that the star had staged the attack because he was unhappy with his salary on the Fox show.

    I don't think the mental excuse will be on the table. Smollett knew what he was doing and knew it was not just illegal but wrong. He might try to use it at sentencing to gain some leniency but don't see him trying to plead that...............but then his attorney may try everything he can.

    Just mho, but I'd bet he lied to his attorney. A sharp lawyer that had known the truth a week ago would have approached the cops / prosecutor with a proposed deal to mitigate this farce.
    Jussie dug a deep hole and is going to the pokey.

    And Geragose is NOT the attorney you hire to plea deal, you hire him to be in the courtroom as I heard one experience lawyer say earlier today. Will be interesting what kind of defense he could possibly make with all the evidence they have.

    The defense will be that Smollett is a victim of systemic racism in the US and acted out of desperation. He is not an individual but a member of an oppressed, exploited, and abused group. That's identity politics - people are never to be treated as individuals (as MLK dreamed they would) but as members of groups.
