Thorium, for those of you who do not know is an alternative to uranium, and is used in powering nuclear reactors. However, unlike uranium, thorium can not be used to make nuclear weapons. Processing thorium does not give enough weapons grade plutonium to make it cost effective. It would cost hundreds of billions of dollars in thorium to make enough plutonium to make even a small scale nuclear weapon.

Thorium also has a much shorter half-life, and it requires a constant electrical charge to be active. This means thorium reactors are meltdown proof. If power goes out the reactor shuts down. It's quite possible to power a thorium reactor purely on solar energy, making it completely green.

Now, do you think the US helping Iran build these reactors to power their country (which is what Iran claims is one of the main goals of their nuclear program), would be a good way to build up friendly relations between out countries? They get safe, efficient nuclear energy, and the US can have a moral victory of helping a nation which has traditionally be considered hostile to us.

Are there any operational thorium reactors atm?
Iran is oil rich so why do they need nuclear power?

They want to power their whole country with nuclear reactors, freeing up oil for foreign trade.

How much will it cost the US taxpayer? Why do you feel we need to help Iran do anything?

No, I don't think it is. I think once Trump leaves office, someone more,...er....well someone who isn't retarded, can work to bring Iran back to the table, and making a very public offer to help build thorium reactors could do that.

We give more money every year to Israel for no reason than it would cost to help Iran build some reactors.

We (the USA) committed to the protection and maintaining a Jewish state within the world in the aftermath of WWII. Iran not so much, Iran wants to destroy Israel.

Why are you promoting US taxpayer money to Iran?

I mean, don't they already have nukes or enough plutonium for them? They want nukes. They will have them. They can turn in some plutonium as a good faith gesture, but we won't ever know how much more they have.

Make sense? It's over, I think. It's mutual destruction, now. That's what they want.

Yes I do. Iran sits on a large oil deposits, and powering their country using nuclear energy would allow them to sell all that oil instead of using it domestically, which would bring in a lot of money.

There is not a single operational commercial thorium reactor in the world right now. Maybe we should build a few before deciding it’s a solution to the Iran issue.

And Israel is just as much a terrorist state as iran ever was. They have committed bombing, mass shootings, and other atrocities against innocent civilians. And yet the US keeps supporting them.

Until Trump pulled out of the nuclear agreement, Iran was living up to the agreement which limited the amount of uranium they were allowed to have, and prohibited them from be enriching uranium beyond a certain point, which was far below the level of enrichment needed to make weapons. This is according to not only every US intelligence agency, but those of every other country which was signed onto the agreement. Trump pulled out of the agreement to play to his base, who are completely ignorant about what the agreement actually did and bought into the Fox News and GOP lies about it.

In fact,, the "alternative" agreeent that Trump wanted to try and force Iran to sign was almost identical to the original agreement. This is how stupid and ignorant Trump and his cultists are.

Mattis released a book recently that reveals Iran attempted to bomb a restaurant in DC during the Obama years.

Obama didn't call it out because he wanted the Iran "deal".

No-we should not help them build thorium reactors.

Iran gets a lot of support from around the world because some nations feel that the US tries to stop nations from now only getting nuclear weapons, but any form of nuclear power as well. (The US is regularly accused of holding back nuclear power to try to further it's own natural gas sales internationally)

If the US were to make a new nuclear agreement where we aided Iran in construction nuclear power plants which would use safe, efficient, non-weaponsizable thorium, it would allow the US to take a moral highground, which we haven't really had in dealings with iran, since we did overthrow their democratic government in put a dictator in power, who murdered hujndreds of thousands of people because he promised us oil.

Numerous intelligence experts have denounced the claims made by Mattis, saying that although there was an attack planned by an Iran-based terrorist group, the evidence showed that the group was never a credible threat, and that there was no evidence that the Iranian government knew about or supported the plan.

They also pointed out that Mattis despises Iran, and has gone out of his way to implicate iran in threats, even when there was no credible evidence of their involvement.

Mattis specifically mentions the Mullahs signed off on it.

This was happening around the same time Iran was stockpiling explosives in london for an attack there.

And again-the cucks (like Obama) let it go.

We should be building our own, not helping Iran do the same thing.
