A pair of Great Danes killed an Ohio woman who kept the rescued animals over her husband’s objections, authorities said. Mary Matthews, 49, was found dead Friday in her Waynesville home by her husband, Dale Mark Matthews, some two years after she rescued the aggressive dogs, the Dayton Daily News reports https://nypost.com/2019/11/05/woman-found-dead-in-home-was-killed-by-great-danes-coroner/
In general, Great Danes are not aggressive. Another odd fatal attack which surprised me even more...., Coon Hounds are one of the last of breeds that I would consider aggressive. https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/new-york-woman-killed-dog-attack-her-home-had-two-n1051836 Emergency responders came to the home where Renna, 67, died of her injuries, police said. Her wounds were consistent with a dog attack, and investigators found two pet coonhounds in the home.
Also: Matthews made the horrific discovery after being released from the Warren County Jail earlier that day. “Numerous” beer cans and medication bottles were also strewn about the living room and kitchen, according to the station. Matthews told police that his wife started most mornings by drinking beer and taking “numerous” prescription medications, NBC News reports. An officer who responded to the home for a possible overdose found the Great Danes in an enclosed deck that was covered in feces so badly that the “actual deck could not be seen,” according to a police report. The time line of events seem odd to me. I have a few friends with Great Danes and they are usually very docile. Seeing that they had been with the family for over two years and frequently fought I wonder if there was animal abuse involved.
Crazy. Sad to hear. However, Great Danes can (sometimes) be very aggressive. RIP to the victim. Btw--Has The RW figured out a way to blame this on Obama or add her to the Clinton Body Count? Yet? Once again, RIP.
yes, weird story, I grew up with a great dane, the most patient and kind hearted animal I've ever had the pleasure of knowing. sounds like she had some serious issues, although I do support the idea of day drinking! <kidding. I'm guessing that she did something bad or odd but who knows, quite out of the norm for that breed but anything's possible with animals that easily cross over 100lbs.
Plus a pen that had not been cared for. She sounds like a difficult person. And even though I could have sympathy for the husband, I think I would want to get an autopsy of her remains just to make sure the husband hadn't decided he had had enough of her.
Great Danes can be aggressive. I've been snapped at by a friend's Great Dane, and was almost attacked by a "service" Great Dane. In the case of rescues, of course abuse may be involved. That's why I would never have a rescue dog, unless I was taking it in from somebody I knew. You don't know what kind of experiences they have had, nor what might trigger their aggression.
The problems usually arise in cases where there are multiple dogs. Dogs are pack animals and a human can end up on the wrong side of their pack mentality. Single dogs are much more domesticated and subservient to their owners.
I had a Dane years ago. Got my butt sued because he bit a little girl in the face. Had to pay for three surgeries over the next few years. He was a good dog, but he got pretty grumpy as he got older.
My 15 y.o. niece has a 10 month old Great Dane. He already weighs 130 lbs. She could ride him if she had a saddle.
But they are typically very passive correct? I don’t have any experience with rescue animals so I cannot attest to that. I don’t see how people can abuse animals
I have known a couple of Great Danes and they wouldn't hurt a fly. Perhaps these ones were angsty that they only get to live 7 years?
Well, they were bred as guard dogs/catch dogs. Rescue animals have usually been mistreated in one way or another.
