He was my first actual president. As a kid I could not vote for him though. Why the left bestowed sainthood on FDR is a huge mystery.

 

The speech impacted the Germans living there. Reagan also went into the Soviet Union and so impressed Russian students they were also craving freedom after he explained it to him. Stalin would have shot Reagan were he still alive at the time. If you think after decades as communists, suddenly they on their own saw the light, think again. Reagan really was the reason why the Soviet empire became an empty suit. When Kennedy talked at the wall, the Germans did not rise up for freedom. He was there when I was there. But he did not inspire the Germans to get freedom. Reagan did.

Cut Sobo some slack. He is just a kid compared to several of us (he is 27) which means he wasn't even born until after the Berlin Wall came down and Germany was reunited. He has lived his entire life in a united Germany and probably thinks German was divided just to keep it down rather than due to the Soviet Union.

He doesn't even remember that East Germany was an economic disaster that upon reunification had to be rescued by West Germany to the tune of tens of billions of Marks.

LBJ's policies in the 1960's bankrupted the Soviet Union and shut down Soviet imperialism in Africa, the ME, and SE Asia. The were toast by 1973, not '20 years later'. Nixon merely continued his polices, plus he could get away with the bombing campaign, something the 'right wing would have impeached Johnson for. Not Reagan, not Ford, not Carter, not Bush I, not Bush II shut them down. We fed them, shipped them fuel, pharmaceuticals, etc., to keep them from collapsing into anarchy and civil war, out of fear of who would end up with their nukes and chemicals. Republican polices didn't do squat, especially Reagan's, who inane babbling only provided the Communist hard liners with fodder to use against Gorbachev's reforms. Reagan's rubbish added another 7 years to the crisis.

In 1977 the Soviets airlifted thousands of Cuban troops to Africa to fight on behalf of Marxist regimes there.
In 1979 the Soviets invaded Afghanistan.

I think you have a bad case of "Texas pride" to give Lyndon Johnson credit for the end of the Cold War. Could you refer me to the work of a single credible historian who does that?
