I want to first start off by saying, I'm sorry. Not necessarily for being optimistic but in the arrogance of my optimism. I had thought, for no other reason than the fact that this is "America" and due to the symptoms of COVID-19, I thought we could either really beat this thing or keep losses to a minimum. I also was afraid of the economic damages because, well, if you're poor you know that money isn't around to really come by.

Because of that, I had spoken against Flattening the Curve. As you can see however, the situation has gotten worse by the day. Cases in the thousands, across the entire US and more than 20,000 cases in New York ALONE. 20,000.

This was not at all what I was expecting. And it's definitely a real life example of exponential growth. Now, I want to reverse myself. This'll bring up old "AmericanNationalist flip-flopping again". You know what, fine, call me a flip flopper but everything I did was to try and save lives.

So according to the math, it might be too late but I don't want to surrender to that fate. It might be too late to avoid mass casualties, but it's not too late to minimize the amount of said mass casualties. So let's Flatten the Curve. This sucks, staying at home sucks and the economic damage is going to be real.

But let's not let this become our meteor moment and lead to the extinction of the human race. Because at that point, finances mean nothing.

    These words honor you.

It's very rare that I read someone state publicly, on a forum, that he was wrong.

    I salute you.

Don’t jump the gun to quick with your flip flopping. And your idea of what mass casualties is no where close to what I think you need to know. A total of 538 Americans have died in the last month from COVID19. Do you know that 538 Americans die every 2 hours from other than Coronavirus. Since the first American death of Coronavirus on Feb 29 there have been 157,800 Americans that have died from other than Coronavirus. The H1N1 of ‘09 infected 56 million Americans with 13,000 deaths in the first year. And the 16,000 worldwide deaths from Coronavirus is 1/10 the daily death total of the world. Over 155,000 people die every day on this planet from other than Coronavirus.

The economic casualty from a continued shutdown will cause much more damage than the Coronavirus itself if changes don’t happen real quick. Do you know that over 10,000 Americans committed suicide after the economic crash of ‘09.

The total number of dead from Covid-19, globally, since november, could fit inside the old Philadelphia Spectrum to watch the Sixers play

Jaybuz......so because more die from other things, this nasty is 'just a flu' like Trump said when he was in downplaying mode. Take it seriously Mr Seal. It is bigger than you presently are willing to accept.

Well done to AN for recognising it for what it is......a very bad bastard of a thing.

It’s a damn easy spreading virus that mainly attacks the elderly with preexisting conditions. The mortality rate is around 1.3%, due mainly to the lack of testing for people showing no signs of the virus. It’s bad, I agree. But it’s not shutting down the nation’s economy bad. Get infected, get sick, build up immunity and get your ass back to work.
Over 5,000 since the beginning of the year.

CDC estimates up to 54,000,000 cases, 500,000 hospitalizations and 59,000 deaths this flu season.

More than several times that amount have died around the world, and most certainly more than 10,000 lives will be lost to the Coronavirus inside of the United States. This pandemic is real, and there's no "quick fix", those drugs will help some but also be fatal to others. What we can do, is to minimize the damage. What that means for the economy, etc is something that'll have to be well thought out but we're from behind, and we're from behind because we underestimated this thing.

Sean Payton described his improving condition while battling the coronavirus
    Andrew Joseph

    Payton said:

"I'm feeling OK. I would say it's been a week now - a week today - that I got tested, so it's Monday. Mostly fatigue. When I went in last week on Monday, I had more chills, I had a low-grade fever - certainly felt like I had the flu. Just as we all would know what that feels like - like where you just want to lay in bed and not do anything. And then gradually, during the course of this week, I would say I've progressively gotten a little better each day. I haven't had to deal with any respiratory issues, and then, Thursday was when I found out the test came back positive."

Take out Thursday and coach Payton would have just thought he had the typical every year flu. No big deal.

10,000 deaths is considered a very mild flu season. The US usually sees anywhere from 15,000-60,000 flu related deaths every year.

If we isolate ourselves into a depression, the loss of life from poverty (including rise in suicides) could well beat out the numbers we save in isolation. In fact, we could very well impoverish ourselves into a different pandemic that we'll be too poor to respond to properly.

True, these are what-ifs and the Cvirus is whats now. But Im just saying lets not go overboard and hold all our eggs in this basket.

Got to agree with @AmericanNationalist. I wasn't too concerned at first, and it pains me as a conservative to say... but we need to shut down everything that's nonessential, everyone needs to stay home, leaving only for neccessary reasons... even if that means penalizing those who don't... and it's time to crank up the fake bank note machine and distributing funds to businesses and citizens alike.

Once we have vaccines, medications, treatments, medical ppe and equipment, once the curve drops and we're reporting an infinitesimally small number of new cases... THEN we can start looking at business as usual.

It's a difficult choice either way, but I prefer the choice that leads to less people dying in a pandemic.

Correct, 155,000 die every day of the year. 56 million people die in this world every year. That’s like New York and California combined.

In a nutshell, this is how I feel. When I learned about the different strains, and how the cases could accelerate and everything else, it became clear that this was the "best" bad decision that we could take. Or maybe somewhere in the middle, where someone suggested you can test and clear people to go to work. But even that requires more tests than what we have, and a different testing strategy.

There's no right here, so I guess what I should say is that no one is 'wrong' per se on either side of the debate. But I want to lessen the damage both for lives and money, as much as we realistically can.

Build immunity? Nah. You can get this thing more than oncde. It is mutating.

Having an ample source of tests alone would make an enourmous difference. A huge difference.

There's light at the end of the tunnel though. People are working their rears off producing ppe, tests, equipment, treatments etc... now the rest of us need to do our part before we crash the medical infrastructure and we have to start picking and choosing who lives or dies.

It’s mutating? It’s constantly mutating but that only pertains to how the virus infects people.

"Prior history suggests that once a patient is infected with COVID-19, they will have a significant degree of immunity or protection from the virus infecting them again in the coming months," he suggests.

In other words, Dr. Orr believes that this coronavirus behaves like other viruses, which are generally difficult to contract a second time after being fought off by the body.

"Typically with viruses, after a patient is infected, it is less likely that they will become infected again," Dr. Orr says."Once the patient recovers, that initial infection essentially serves as a form of vaccination against the disease. The patient's immune system now recognizes that virus should it encounter it again. As a result, the immune system is prepared to fight off the virus, resulting in either no infection at all or perhaps a minor form of the disease."

    Nifty cherry picking.

You need to comprehend the link. Reappearing in communities has nothing to do with getting it twice. For the ones not infected by COVID19 this flu season there will be a good chance they’ll be susceptible to COVID19 next flu season. That’s what reappearing means.
