The Souths agrarian economy that was being left behind by the industrialized north and without slavery their economic demise would be hastened just as it was post civil war.
Now as for why the south went to war it wasnt to retain the institution of slavery as much as it was the resentment of southern states at being ruled from afar by an industrial north or Yankees which was the pejorative term for northerners of that era. Beyond that the South had started to see itself as a separate nation decades before the war and wanted to expand into Texas and clear across to California. The civil war was the climax of that mindset and you must remember only a small percentage of the very rich in the South owned slaves. Johnny Reb didn't go to war to protect slavery he went to war for the South as an independent nation.

 

Shouldn't that be offered as an tax deductible gift for any that choose to participate? That would be vastly more popular and effective...

 

Of course some could be racist. They are human. But to blame all cops like these idiot rioters are doing is stupid. Arrest and charge the bad ones when they screw up, and do it without burning down cities and blaming all police. It's liberals in charge of these cities. It's their fault if the bad ones are not dealt with. Probably because they WANT this divisiveness to occur. That's how they stay in power, by categorizing and dividing people, instead of all races just being the human race.

Sorry, I'm not taking the word of a grade school teacher as gospel. Seeing the education discrepancy between whites and blacks I can totally see where some folks might think she's worth listening to, but really, anyone with a higher education can argue just as well against her tripe. Is that the route we are going? If they are looking to start a war and create their own nation, then so be it, I can respect that. There will be lots of blood spilled, but at least it is for a worthy cause. Stealing TV's and burning down innocent people's property for it's own sake is not a worthy cause. If they started only targeting police officers and government institutions then I would have more respect for them. What they are doing is anarchy for anarchy's sake.

You may not realize it, but you are contradicting yourself. First you said the slaves were worth zero. Then, you say Southerners wanted to take them to Texas and California. Why take worthless property with you?
I agree that the poor Whites who didn't own slaves were suckered into fighting for the rich people who did own them. That's still true today---poor people die in rich people's wars. Some things don't change.

 

One thing really sticks out in your post. Do some research and you'll find Lincoln said he'd let the South retain slavery if they stayed in the union so obviously they didn't go to war to keep their slaves.
