So long as some states like Texas and Florida let the virus run freely yes... travel between the states will let this roll back and forth across the country

All those young people "gathering in groups" are Trump supporters.

No one is letting it "run freely".

Abbott shut down bars again, because stupid kids drinking and protesting were running up hospitalizations. The numbers are already flattening.

Without measures like shuttering businesses likely to spread the virus, or even stay-at-home orders in extreme situations, we won't get the new case count down to the point enough people will go out and spend. We can't prevent a nasty recession if open up and hope for the best.

Their only chance for many of them to survive is for us to help them financially until we cut the number of new cases. The Trump-Republican approach you endorse--not much financial help while running wide open--is best best way to put the final nail in the small business coffin.

Your graph indicates that people have a great sense of self-preservation without government intervention. So, let businesses open if the owner wishes to open. Yes, they will have less traffic as people voluntarily stay home when their is a localized rise in cases in their neighborhood or city. That chart actually makes the conservative point for opening business; it doesn't refute it.

There is a difference between an economic recession, caused by the virus itself and global economic devastation, caused by government-mandated shut downs.

Also, some of you are very bad mind readers. I've never written, or endorsed, any opinion about financial help.

But you advocate completely different behavior.

    In some ways that's worse

How bad does it have to get before you Trump supporters get it?
Who in their right mind would move to Florida or Texas at this time?
You support the guy whose complete leadership failure has killed over 100,000 Americans. Why can't we even keep up with Canada whose provinces have more power than our states? Yesterday, they had 507 new cases while we had 68,577.

How many of those 68,377 infected Americans will have lasting health problems? Italians already live an average four years longer than we do. Are you hoping to double it to eight years?

All over having to wear a mask indoors if you can't socially distance.

Yes, and then they'll bring it back down. The number of people wearing masks decreased incrementally over a month or two when it looked like Texas wasn't going to get hit, and started increasing again when the cases and hospitalizations started increasing after the partiers and protests started. That was before Abbott mandated wearing masks.

Most mature people have a natural instinct for survival even without government. It's some of the young who are "invincible" and therefore could care less.

Covid still has a bit to go before catching auto crashes as a killer. Where's the shutdown over car crashes? Where's the outrage directed at political leaders? Oh yeah, all that death and mangling is just considered an acceptable cost to the way we want to live. And now some folks have the nerve to think the same way about a disease (something that may be impossible to control btw as opposed to auto crahes).

In a thousand years I doubt anyone could tell you what our Covid 19 response was. But I guarantee you that many will be aware that their ancestors killed each other by the tens of thousands Per year by slamming into each other in metal boxes all the while considering it as just a fact of life.

I think I'll stick to splitting time between Oregon and British Columbia.

Cars have been getting safer, thanks to regs.

Right wingers complained constantly, but the improvement in safety has been huge.

All of which has f all to do with this disease.

For Pete's sake stop dancing around what I write. Forcing businesses to close is what is authoritarian. Masks don't hurt people. Closing businesses hurts everybody.

I was responding to the typical bashing of Trump supporters' apparent attitudes toward Covid. My post is very relevant as the human behavior happening here is similar to the human behavior toward auto risk.

Speed limits could be lowered and lives could be saved but many people would consider those restrictions too costly to their way of life.

Insert Covid restriction here could be implemented and lives could be saved but many people consider it too costly to their way of lives .

I'm simply pointing out that this human behavior is not unique to trump supporters (if one could generalize a group's behavior)

More Trump supporter whataboutism. Egads. You Trump defenders never stop.
Oh, I watched our response very carefully back in February and early March. My wife and I decided to spend all our time in British Columbia (5m people) instead of splitting time between BC and Oregon.

    2A728961-E05C-4810-BA46-ECB572DDBE7D.jpeg

We can go to a bar, dine-in a restaurant, get a haircut (I did yesterday), visit the mall, etc. Only 17 people in the entire province in the hospital.
