It should have been a very popular event -- with legendary quarterbacks on both teams and an almost 'storybook' cast of Brady and Gronkowski on the underdog Bucs' team versus the defending-champion Kansas City Chiefs led by the sensational Patrick Mahomes.

It should have been a very well-viewed contest -- after all, people were sick of the 'pandemic virus', sick of all the hateful political drama, sick of the cold, winter weather, and sick of pissed off and angry for months on end. So -- what went wrong?

When you open a thread like this, you are expected to express personal comment in order to comply with the forum rules... so... my two-cents:

    1. The normal season schedule had been so disrupted by the COVID virus that people had become disinterested and distracted, as they had been with other sports, too.
    2. Mangling professional football into political propaganda theater to promote BLM and ANTIFA viewpoints had already turned a LOT of people away in disgust.
    3. Promoting an "alternate" Black National Anthem, "Lift Every Voice and Sing" was repugnant and nauseating to a large portion of an NFL audience (remember: only ~14% of the American population is Black).
    4. The Super Bowl commercials were mostly insipid, saccharine-laced flops.
    5. The half-time entertainment was yet another exercise in boring bad taste. (The best half-time show ever was Lady Gaga in 2017!)

What do you think went wrong? Or did the whole flop interest you enough to even care...?

I go with #1. Still my wife and I watched the Super Bowl but, again, because of COVID it lost a lot of it's authenticity (fake people!!).

I think people were hoping to see Carol Channing at half-time and when they heard it would be The Weekend instead they made other plans. ;)

I have never understood the appeal of American football tbh. Some of the commercials are great though usually

It is where people point out issues and injustices that are occurring: Conservatives don’t like these.

Anybody that refuses to watch a sporting event because of politics is not a sports fan. Sports have supported many causes through the years, most visibly perhaps during bread cancer awareness month, or whatever it's called. Who cares? I watch the game. The rest is irrelevant to the game.

I blame Brady’s support for trump for the low ratings

Think of a "woke fest" as a sort of "Kwanzaa, Part 2".

Black athletes are a BIG part of the NFL, because through competition they prove themselves very often to be the BEST! But through the years, liberal-Left political factions have added all this "BLM/ANTIFA/NFAC" baggage onto NFL games, along with the anti-American 'kneeling' guerrilla-theater, and even a separate "Black National Anthem".

If all the NFL really cares about appealing to is the American Black population, then they're stupidly restricting themselves to a segment of the population that is approximately 14%. Does any professional in either the marketing, advertising, or even the political arena think that's a good idea...?

Nonexistent issues and 'injustices', there you go. There will be 'injustices' for the end of time as long as grievance has a financial compensation to it.
And thus, the liberals cannot progress us any further, and have little interest in doing so. It's not financially viable to end social conflicts.

It's the equivalent of complaining about a beehive existing, even though not a single bee has stung you.

Your comparison has another point of relevance also -- those factions that bitch about a "beehive existing" (although they've never been 'stung') do so endlessly -- BUT -- when the government, supported by tax-PAYERS, is giving away FREE HONEY, the bitching-factions are ALWAYS the first in line to get it! :knifefork:

    1) TV Ratings aren't as big of a deal as they used to be, with younger fans adopting Streaming Technology to watch on alternate platforms.

    2) I have to take issue with this statenent:

    "legendary quarterbacks on both teams".

Brady is a Legend, The GOAT, Etc.

Mahomes is a 25 y/o off to a fast start, BUT Mahomes has a lot left to prove to earn "legendary" status.

    3) And, yeah. Gaga was Epic:

Just because it isn’t an issue or injustice to you does not mean it isn’t one.
Native Americans have struggled against many for generations that are just now coming to light for the average person, so have many marginalized groups.

I watched the first half and then did other things when I saw how it was going. I have a lot of friends that are into sports that just didn't bother. They didn't want to be preached to by the Left all day.

Well, Cowboy, take a good long LOOK at it, from start to finish -- and it's true of more and more of nearly everything you see on TV now!
As the saying goes, "It is what it is!"

Is there a big ongoing 'woke'-fest for East-Asians (Oriental)? Do they sing a separate East-Asian "National Anthem" before a football game? Do you see East-Asian faces every single time you turn on your television? And, no, I'm not "East-Asian" at all, but you must admit, the fact that you can't even watch a football game anymore without black-THIS, and black-THAT, and black-SOMETHING ELSE, having to be laced throughout the whole thing. Is it really so surprising that a predominately white American audience might just turn away in exhaustion and say, "OK, that's about all of THAT crap I need to look at for awhile...!"
