Geez, do you have OCD? You cannot and should not control everything your teenagers does. Tjere is no reason to monitor their Spotify lists, sneak-peak at their text messages and glance at their YouTube history.

"Selena Gomez - Hands to myself??? GAAAASP!"
"My daughter youtubed 'How to tell a boy likes you'??? OMG!"
"Wait! She said the f-word in a text? Ohh myy gaawd, I am literally shaking here!"

I am always very reluctant to speak about parenting since I have no kids of my own, but come on. This is just weird, wrong and creepy.

If you do not want the school to hand out reading assignmemts to your kids, I am not sure if there is any school (even homeschool) that you would approve of.

    I am not a Lib.

That is not at all what this is about. You really are a snowflake, aren't ya?

Are you slow? This is not about what I find offensive nor what I would allow my kids access to - it should be at least dimly obvious that I'm not personally offended by much (I mean really, I could hardly have made that any clearer). FFS, I can't say it simpler: let the parents decide what is appropriate for their kids.

If that is what parents want, they should not send them to public school in the first place (not sure anyone should, tbh)

Even more important, the technology has changed.
They need something. Parents aren't typically enough.
Yes, and students learn skills best when the material they practice on is interesting to them.
I think Critical Race Theory is an effort to propagandize and should not be taught as fact. Issues it addresses are fact.

I had classes with thirty students. How is that supposed to work?

You want to know why teachers join teachers' unions (and teachers' associations where unions aren't allowed)? Look in the mirror.

Parental options are great as long as parents are made aware of said option and have to sign permission slips to allow their student to read r or nc 17 material.

Parents make themselves aware of the school board policies and procedures as responsible parents would, don’t they?

Parents have a broad range of preferences and prejudices. If they want to pass some or all of them on to their progeny, they must assume parental responsibility and actively participate in the child's education - which they are entitled to do and which the Loudoun County School Board encourages them to do.

Back in the 1960's I had certainly heard about it and about to get a more hands on if you get my drift but it wasn't from my English/Lit teacher and it wasn't on the radio and TV and every movie I went to. Are we a better society because it is now?

That’s why they need permission slips. Parents can know policy backwards and forwards but that doesn’t say when something objectionable will come up.

Sure thing, within my lifetime Lady Chatterley's Lover was still banned in the States and UK.

You don't know what free speech is. It doesn't mean giving any type of reading material to kids. We are NOT saying that the book shouldn't be allowed to be written. THAT would be anti-free speech.

So you would give ANY book to ANY age?

What KIND of soldier? I specified COMBAT soldier. You obviously missed that.

    It's irrelevant to what?

Well I didn't say that they were NOT teenagers! I said "KIDS." How is that "making it appear" that I'm saying NOT teenagers?

You think that we'd be bothered about the book if it was NOT handed out to kids?

Well how else could I know what you think? Why do you think the 'satisfaction of sex' is a relevant part of sex education?

So then you're AGAINST this book being handed out to kids?

No book is wantonly "handed out to kids."

Are you opposed to parents having control over what material is included in their children's curriculum?

Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) reminds parents that if they feel a book is not appropriate for their student, they may request an alternate text be assigned. (When a reading assignment is optional, there are several selections available.) There will be no academic penalty for a student should they request an alternate text to fulfil an assignment...

LCPS recognizes that its students and families come with a host of varying life experiences, values and sensitivities. The school division also understands that secondary textbooks, both classic and contemporary, curricular and self-selected, may have sensitive content and therefore offers options for students and families.
The Catcher in the Rye was widely censored in the United States - among allegations that it was part of an "overall communist plot." Certainly, books should be "age appropriate"
but no child should have his education limited by the parents of other kids.

Is there something wrong with students knowing it isn't true?

I have to wonder what high schools you all attended back in the day. Literature that covers sex was pretty normal in high school.

Why is it being promoted in school by a teacher? THAT is the question.
