It remains to be seen what affect billions of dollars of our military equipment in Taliban hands will be. Goat herders aren't going to be able to use the high tech stuff and without parts, many vehicles won't last too long. I hear some of it is being shipped back into Pakistan. I'm sure China, Russia, and Iran are waiting to get their hands on some of it.

The US keeps thinking they can nation build the way they did after WW II, the government just doesn't understand that the culture of tribal societies doesn't work that way. I said before that we could stay there 100 years and the country would still fall apart, we would have to fully colonize the region to have any chance of it working, and that's not going to happen. While I have favored pulling all our troops out, after listening to certain talking heads, it might have been better to keep the bare minimum in there. We only had 2500 non combat personnel in there and haven't suffered a death in 18 months. What will the future cost of allowing the Taliban to take over be? But then, how long do we prop up a corrupt government? Corruption is one reason their army collapsed so quickly. The troops in the field weren't being paid or supplied. And after all our blood and money what did we get out of it? We couldn't even get the mining rights we wanted so bad, no, instead China gets mining rights. That region has never seen peace for long. Hopefully they are too busy fighting each other and have no time to plot the next terrorist attack on US soil.
