Jan. 6 committee considering possibility of criminal referrals

Now several months into their probe, members of the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol riot are weighing the possibility of sending criminal referrals to the Justice Department, The New York Times reports.

The panel was formed to put together the most complete account of the assault on the Capitol and make recommendations to prevent similar attacks in the future. Since beginning the investigation over the summer, the committee has interviewed more than 300 witnesses and received tens of thousands of documents and records. The more they learn about the Capitol riot, the days leading up to it, and the players involved, the more panel members are considering asking the Justice Department to pursue specific criminal cases, the Times reports.

Committee investigators are specifically looking at two crimes: whether wire fraud was committed by Republicans who raised millions of dollars off of baseless election fraud claims, and whether former President Donald Trump and allies obstructed Congress by attempting to block the certification of electoral votes, people familiar with the matter told the Times. They did not share what evidence the committee has that may support criminal referrals.

    ................................................................................................................................................................
In recent weeks, the committee has publicly signaled its interest in the question of criminality. Shortly after obtaining from Mr. Meadows 9,000 pages of documents — including text messages and a PowerPoint presentation — the panel’s top Republican, Representative Liz Cheney of Wyoming, read from the criminal code at a televised hearing.

She suggested that Mr. Trump, by failing to stop the violence at the Capitol on Jan. 6, might have violated the federal law that prohibits obstructing an official proceeding before Congress.

Trump’s newest business partner: A Chinese firm with a history of SEC investigations

A Chinese firm helping former president Donald Trump take his new media company public has been the target of investigations by federal securities regulators, who say the firm misrepresented shell companies with no products and few employees as ambitious, growing enterprises, documents and interviews show.

Arc Capital, an investment advisory firm based in Shanghai, has repeatedly helped create or finance companies with little or no revenue, no customers and office locations that point to P.O. boxes, according to a Washington Post review of regulatory and court filings. One claimed to be developing autonomous drone software despite having no employees; another said it operated a publicly traded in-home bakery “specializing in freshly-made cakes and cupcakes” before saying it pivoted into touch-screen technologies for a “diversified blue-chip client base,” regulatory filings show.

Members of The Following who make baseless allegations about China and Biden will be silent about this.

2 Georgia poll workers sue Giuliani, OAN over election conspiracy theories

Two former Georgia election workers are suing Trump adviser Rudy Giuliani, One America News Network and several of the network’s top executives for pushing a series of debunked conspiracy theories about the workers' role in the 2020 election that they said put them in physical danger and threatened their livelihoods.

Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss, her daughter, worked as poll workers counting ballots at State Farm Arena in Fulton County, Ga., during the November 2020 election. In a lawsuit filed in Washington, D.C., on Thursday, the two asserted that they became the center of a series of unfounded conspiracy theories pushed by Giuliani, the former New York City mayor who served as an adviser to former President Donald Trump during the 2020 election, as well as several top employees of OAN, the California-based cable news network with close ties to the then-president.

House Investigation Uncovers Trump-Era COVID Chaos

By August 2020, Dr. Deborah Birx made it known that she had hit her limit.

The Trump administration’s COVID-19 response coordinator, Birx had been asked to attend a COVID-19 roundtable event with some of the country’s leading advocates of the so-called “herd immunity” approach — figures that included neuroradiologist Scott Atlas, and Great Barrington Declaration authors Jay Bhattacharya and Martin Kulldorff.

The theory pushed by those at the planned Aug. 25 roundtable held that the U.S. should focus on keeping COVID-19 out of long-term care facilities, leaving the virus to spread through the rest of the population until it had nobody left to infect. The Trump administration, with leadership absent during the preceding six months and the death toll approaching 180,000, alternated between grasping for a way to stem the economic impact of the pandemic and cracking down on federal officials who spoke honestly about the toll.

“Best if this proceeds without my presence,” Birx wrote in an Aug. 25 email, to 16 senior Trump White House officials. “I can’t be part of this with these people who believe in herd immunity,” she added in a lengthy follow-up message to Marc Short, Vice President Pence’s chief of staff.

It's only fitting that these members of the Trump crime family be subpoenaed together.

Trump, Ivanka, Don Jr subpoenaed by NY attorney general

NEW YORK (AP) — New York’s attorney general recently subpoenaed former President Donald Trump and his two eldest children, Ivanka and Donald Trump Jr., demanding their testimony in connection with a civil investigation into the family’s business practices, according to a court filing made public Monday.

The subpoenas, stemming from Attorney General Letitia James’ yearslong investigation into matters including “the valuation of properties owned or controlled” by Trump and his company, the Trump Organization, came to light after James went to court last month seeking to force the Trumps to comply.

The attorney general’s attempt to get testimony from the former president was reported in December, but the court filing Monday was the first public disclosure that investigators were also seeking information from Ivanka Trump and Donald Trump Jr.

EXCLUSIVE | OPINION: BJay Pak’s strange - and Trumpian - election journey

Pak was testifying about the unrelenting pressure from Trump’s team, who seemingly wanted Justice officials to bend the law and accept facts from an alternate universe.

“Well, that seems — that’s very — that’s crazy,’” Pak recalled telling Richard Donoghue, then the acting deputy attorney general. “That’s just highly crazy.” Donoghue agreed, saying it was “bat(shoot) crazy.” What was so crazy?

It was during a phone call either Dec. 30 or 31, 2020 when Donoghue told Pak that a Trump loyalist in the Justice department wanted to enlist that agency’s help to overthrow the election in Georgia. The official wanted to send a letter to Georgia’s legislators urging them to throw out the presidential electors and consider installing a new slate, citing “significant concerns” about the election.

Amongst those “concerns” were allegations of fraud that already had been debunked, like the so-called “suitcases of illegal votes” found election night at the Fulton County counting center. Pak knew state election officials and the FBI had already shot down that claim of fraud. In fact, he knew of no confirmed fraud in the state.

    Never Trumpers ponder what’s next

For those Republicans who dare to publicly oppose Donald J. Trump, politics can be a lonely place.

Both Jeff Flake, the former Senator from Arizona, and Cindy McCain, the widow of Senator John McCain, landed ambassadorships in the Biden administration, but has anyone heard from the former senator from Tennessee, Bob Corker, lately? As for the 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach Trump last year, the former president has succeeded in pushing them out, or else frighten most of the rest into silence, with the fates of a few others — notably, Representative Liz Cheney of Wyoming — yet to be written.

As for the broader network of disaffected Republican strategists and activists who worked to defeat Trump in 2020, the upcoming midterms are highlighting a conundrum: With Trump not on the ballot, what should they be doing in 2022?

Mods, this came to me in an e-mail from the NYT. No link available.

Just because Biden and the Dems are unraveling, doesn't mean America is. It's the Constitution unraveling Dems and Biden, which is exactly what should be happening when they attempt to exert illegitimate power.

We'll soon have an election, which Dems will lose badly, as they should, since they are not representing the American People.

What Biden’s Approval Rating Means for the Midterms.

“Although the presidential election isn’t for another 2½ years, the midterm elections are fast approaching. In our increasingly polarized and nationalized politics, the single most determinative factor in midterm outcomes is the president’s job approval. . . . Assuming the parties don’t nominate particularly weak candidates and there are no further retirements, a Republican-controlled Senate starts to come into the picture when Biden’s job approval falls to around 51% and becomes the most likely outcome at around 48%.”

N.Y. Attorney General Outlines Pattern of Possible Fraud at Trump Business

The New York State attorney general, Letitia James, accused Donald J. Trump’s family business late Tuesday of repeatedly misrepresenting the value of its assets to bolster its bottom line, saying in court papers that the company had engaged in “fraudulent or misleading” practices.

The filing came in response to Mr. Trump’s recent effort to block Ms. James from questioning him and two of his adult children under oath as part of a civil investigation of his business, the Trump Organization. Ms. James’s inquiry into Mr. Trump and the company is ongoing, and it is unclear whether her lawyers will ultimately file a lawsuit against them.

Still, the filing marked the first time that the attorney general’s office leveled such specific accusations against the former president’s company. Her broadside ratchets up the pressure on Mr. Trump as he seeks to shut down her investigation, which he has called a partisan witch hunt. Ms. James is a Democrat.

National Archives On Verge Of Giving Trump Docs To Jan 6 Committee

The National Archives will give the Jan. 6 Committee its first few documents from the Trump White House this evening, absent a court order.

Trump has sued to block the archives from releasing documents from the first three tranches of records that archivists have identified as relevant to the committee’s subpoena. Courts have agreed to freeze the release of those tranches, even after Trump has lost the case at the district and appellate court levels, pending his ongoing appeal to the Supreme Court.

Now, Justice Department officials say in court filings that an additional fourth tranche — containing a whopping four documents — is not covered by the rulings that freeze release of the initial three.

If a court doesn’t block release by 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, the Department said, the records will be released.

Supreme Court rejects Trump request to block release of records to January 6 committee

The Supreme Court late Wednesday afternoon rejected a request by former President Donald Trump to block White House records from being sent to a House select committee investigating the January 6 Capitol riot.

The ruling, which Trump cannot appeal, sets the stage for more than 700 pages of Trump White House records to soon be sent by the National Archives to the select committee.

Trump in late 2021 lost efforts in Washington, D.C.’s federal district and appeals courts to block the panel from getting those documents, and then asked the Supreme Court to take the case.

He had argued unsuccessfully in those courts that he had the authority as a former president to invoke executive privilege to prevent disclosure of the records and cited that argument in his application to the Supreme Court.

Georgia County DA Requests Special Grand Jury In Trump Election Steal Probe

Georgia’s Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis requested a special grand jury in her election interference investigation into ex-President Donald Trump on Thursday.

Willis sent the request to the chief judge of Fulton County’s Superior Court, Christopher Brasher, in a letter obtained by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The prosecutor told Brasher that she needed help with her probe from a special grand jury because a “significant number of witnesses and prospective witnesses have refused to cooperate with the investigation absent a subpoena requiring their testimony.”

Willis’ investigation, which was launched nearly a year ago, is centered on Trump’s failed pressure campaign to push Georgia officials to help him steal the state’s 2020 election results from Joe Biden. One of the most infamous moments of the ex-president’s scheme was a call he made to Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger in early January last year, during which Trump demanded that Raffensperger “find” nonexistent votes to flip Georgia in his favor.

Trump campaign officials, led by Rudy Giuliani, oversaw fake electors plot in 7 states

Washington (CNN)Trump campaign officials, led by Rudy Giuliani, oversaw efforts in December 2020 to put forward illegitimate electors from seven states that Trump lost, according to three sources with direct knowledge of the scheme.

The sources said members of former President Donald Trump's campaign team were far more involved than previously known in the plan, a core tenet of the broader plot to overturn President Joe Biden's victory when Congress counted the electoral votes on January 6.
Giuliani and his allies coordinated the nuts-and-bolts of the process on a state-by-state level, the sources told CNN. One source said there were multiple planning calls between Trump campaign officials and GOP state operatives, and that Giuliani participated in at least one call. The source also said the Trump campaign lined up supporters to fill elector slots, secured meeting rooms in statehouses for the fake electors to meet on December 14, 2020, and circulated drafts of fake certificates that were ultimately sent to the National Archives.

in order to refute them they must first exist. Things paranoid conspiracy theorists make up in their own mind are not facts.

I think it's gone beyond TDS, and graduated to full blown Trump OCD, at least in this forum. I could start a thread about putting up a traffic light near my house and within a few posts, the ex-President would somehow be involved in the conversation.

Trump officials hindered at least nine key oversight probes, watchdogs said. Some may finally be released in coming months.
Trump has pushed out 5 inspectors general since April. Here’s who they are

Keep supporting him guys, and keep fighting amongst each other also. Your only helping the corrupt politicians control you more. “United Stand Divided We Fall.
