Exactly. And that list is not infringing on my right to bear arms.

I'm 100% on board with that list. But we all know rightists and the GOP will just say nope.

In a perfect world, 2 weeks of training and continuing refresher training by an accredited trainer would be good for everyone who keeps a gun for self-defense. But it would be prohibitively expensive for the average person, and it would, therefore be an impediment to the right, especially for those of limited means.

Teachers, as I think you both realize, are in a special position of trust. The purpose of them carrying firearms is not simply to protect themselves, but to protect the children of others - children whose parents have entrusted the school with the care of their children while they're there. Because of the critical importance of their purpose - their mission, if you will - it seems to me that the level of training must be at a high level, and the cost should be picked up by the school district or city or county or state where they are.

It is one thing to keep a .38 revolver in your nightstand at home in case of an intruder and quite another to carry a concealed weapon in a school full of children for the express purpose of defending against an active mass shooter. I have raised two children, and so I know what it is to be a parent. My children are grown adults now, but I know that I would not approve of some unscreened, unqualified, untrained or poorly trained teachers carrying around loaded firearms in my child's school. That is a recipe for disaster. And so I would hold the school district responsible for properly training whatever staff chose to carry a concealed weapon. And I would expect that training to be at a high level - more than what is required of the average citizen to own a firearm.

And so, sure ... it would be nice if everyone got that level of training, but requiring it for all gun owners as a condition of owning a firearm is probably unconstitutional because of the impediment those requirements would place upon the right.

But to arm teachers is for a specific mission in a specific place and for the protection of the most precious things we have in life. It is a tremendous responsibility they are taking on, if they choose to. And so, if we are to arm teachers, we should do it right, and what I laid out is doing it right.

Thanks for reading my post and responding.

    Seth

Nope, not an impediment, that would part of the WELL REGULATED part.

I wouldn't support it being mandatory for teachers to carry. But certainly I'd prefer they be allowed to.

Teachers get adequate pay already. If they don't like their jobs they can leave.

Just hire armed cops as teachers from now on. In fact maybe just bring in military personnel armed with automatic weapons, to teach.

The biggest problem: Most teachers probably don't want to carry a weapon. That is not what they signed up for.

The logical conclusion to the right-wing approach is obvious: Just give the students weapons.

Armed Teachers in School. Thoughts ?
~ I think it's inevitable. Eventually everyone in the USA who wants a pistola will get one. As society progresses in America guns will very likely be more commonplace and the stigma will disappear.
Where I live most schools are "locked down" and have local police resource officers on grounds. Our police department has drills for school/public shooting incidents and special tactics officers who are trained to go in quickly and "neutralize " the threat.
Hopefully we will soon have school choice and parents can decide what school is appropriate for their children . Smaller schools are always better.

"school choice" in no way means you can always find a school with everything you like.

~ Nobody expects that. But public schools in the USA have been failing for 20 years. It is just getting worse ...
I believe most parents see this and America would do much better the other way.

More than 20 years. More like 50 (since 1970).

    But fixing them is easy.

Polk County Fla Sherriff Grady Judd is one of the pioneers of armed teacher initiatives in the US. Teachers/staff who volunteer must pass exhaustive background checks, including phycological evaluations, and then undergo intensive training - aspects of which are more rigorous than even his own deputies have to go thru. It's common sense. Something the Israelis have understood forever.

I wasn't quite sure whether to laugh or cry at the teacher profiled in the Inside Edition segment, whose chosen precaution is a baseball bat in the closet. She's nearly as clueless as these morons:

Hockey pucks: They're small and heavy and — one Michigan college thinks — may be the perfect weapon against an active shooter on campus...

...The police chief also suggested that a group of students could "rush" an active shooter with their pucks, creating a distraction that would allow someone else to get their hands on the shooter's weapon.

"The police chief." The Stupid is strong with you, young jedi.

That's good to know. Your ad hominem caricature has contributed so much to the discussion.

Depends on the teacher. Some re worth their weight in gold others should be working fast food or some other menial job hell almost anywhere other than a class room

Just think how more effective these “groomers” will be at “turning” kids gay or transgender when they’re armed.

Sounds good to me. The criminals all carry guns. Oh wait, we have a law that felons can't have a gun. How's that working out?
We also have a law against murder. How's that working out?
Schools are gun free zones. How's that working out?

Pretty sure the ones that want to groom would be too afraid of a gun to own one.
