C'mon man, really? First CA hits you with a 10 percent sales tax and then buries you with 14 percent more. Some folks might try to defend this, but a 24 percent tax is a 24 percent tax.

There are different Excise taxes on different things.
One important question is what sort of thing did you purchase?

California is one of the highest tax states in the country, with both a 7.25% sales tax and a progressive income tax that can average around 7%, even higher for those with high incomes.

For comparison, of the other two states on the West Coast, Oregon has a state income tax that averages around 9% but no sales tax, and Washington has a sales tax of 6.5% (more like 10% with taxes from local governments added on) but has no state income tax. (Washington also has a business tax rate that is typically just around 0.1% of a business's total revenue)

On top of that, California also has a 1.5 to 8.84% corporate tax, which has an effect on increasing prices of what you buy in a less visible way.

I don’t know what this particular purchase was, but I do know CA has an excise tax for pot and ammo. But still, a 24% total tax is pretty extreme.

Someone has to pay for all of their progressive freebie ideas.

I remember years ago when we checked into a hotel in Amsterdam that we booked online, the receptionist told us there was an additional city tax that we still had to pay. Okay. The difference is the Netherlands is not a shithole that people are climbing over themselves to get out of. You charge high taxes because you're a place people want to be. You charge high taxes and you're a dump, and you wind up with a $60 billion budget deficit.

Some of the most expensive things are the unfunded mandates.

That's where if you're a business the state tells you what you have to choose, do, buy, or provide, but doesn't pay you for it.

It's more the idea of freebies. The state claims its offering gender reassignment surgery to everyone, including illegals, but we all know the state is too broke to actually make good on such a promise.

Also keep in mind that some of those freebies come in the form of excessive lawsuit judgements.

Think you were wronged by someone working in a school? Sue the public school and maybe you can get a million dollars.
    Of course that's taxpayer money.

For some reason, those on the Left seem to like the idea of a lotto system.
(This despite their rallying cries against "inequality", ironically)

The state just did a bunch of painting here at the store where I work for the handicap lines and the handicap parking spot which they ironically placed about as far away from the door as possible.

I'm curious and I'll have to ask my boss later if the state did that free of charge or if they charged him?

FB, you know me, I'm impossible to offend. You and anyone else can make Italian, German, Irish, Armenian, white, wife, mother, etc jokes and they'll just bounce off me. But a 24% tax on a purchase just rubs me the wrong way. How much of our money does the government want?

Wars have been fought over such.

The answer to your question is if you have an ultra woke progressive government, just as much as the parasitic bastards can Leach out of you.

Ah, the American obsession with stiffing each other.

Everybody wants to be the stiffer (fweedumb!) but not the stiffee!(tyranny!)

The sad part is it'll encourage more Californians to make an exodus and then they'll just move somewhere with sane rates of taxation and vote in the same sort of stupid progressives that make policies like this and then scratch their head and wonder how taxes get so high.

Progressivism spreads and metastasizes like cancer and destroys everything it touches

Our government taxes us for existing and then taxes us more when we try to survive or live our lives freely. Does anyone want to take a stab at who gets everything they need to exist and survive and isn’t taxed?

You mean like viruses replicating inside an infected cell, and then at some point that cell finally bursting open with viruses spilling out in all directions to start infecting new cells?

The interesting thing is that there's huge numbers of progressives who have been priced out, progressives unable to afford the effects of their policies they support.
For example, a huge number of the progressives moving away to conservative states are public school teachers, with only moderate to mediocre salaries who don't feel they can afford to keep living in their progressive area. Lots of lower level government employees too.

Or think about the hippie type of personality who does not want to be under the immense financial pressure and be trapped in a rat race.

So while it is true there are conservatives leaving the state for political and lifestyle reasons, it's also true that a disproportionate number of the other people leaving who are not conservatives are pretty Left leaning progressives.

They move to conservative states, but they typically concentrate into the biggest city areas within those states. Because they're accustomed to living in a city, with all the amenities and higher income opportunities those cities provide, and so they can be around their own kind -- something that's really true of almost any minority group.

But a problem is, a lot of the big cities in conservative states really aren't that big, and there's not enough room. So you start getting really high-density housing, any last remaining open space disappears, and it starts displacing the rest of the population who would have lived there.

A lot of conservatives don't understand, you can run away, but there is no long-term escape.

I'm going to guess that a lot of conservatives who say "I don't care what happens in California" are only expecting to live another 10 or 15 years or so.

I was born in the Bronx and raised in New York. I joined the Army at 18 and since then have lived (as in been a resident) of Oklahoma, Missouri, Germany, Virginia, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Florida, Georgia, Pennsylvania, and 20 years in California. I have also spent extensive time in Israel, UK, Kuwait, Greece, Turkey, Iraq, Mississippi, West Virginia, Delaware, and more. (I am a firm believer in the old saying that "Being in the world and only living in one place is like living in a library and only reading one book".)

The differences between US states are often more pronounced than the differences between certain nations.

Now I am retired in Texas. It is like nowhere I have ever lived before. There are obvious differences like no state income tax (and we have a $30 Billion state SURPLUS, while CA has the highest state income taxes and has a $128 Billion deficit). The China Virus Tyranny (mandatory masks, school/business closings, etc. was outlawed here early on. (We still joke that our kids will be doctors and astronauts while blue state kids will still be in their pajamas learning to read.) But there are more subtle differences like kids playing outside unsupervised (and they still say "Yes, Sir" and "No Ma'am"). Marijuana is still illegal here. We are a "sanctuary state" for the Second Amendment. We defend our own borders when the federal government fails to perform its duty to do so. The differences between the SOVEREIGN STATE of New York where I was born and the SOVEREIGN STATE of Texas where I will die are EXTREME.

    TEXAS!!! WHERE FREEDOM LIVES!!!

Socialists want all of it so that they can provide what they think people need. They have been amazingly successful at undermining the capitalist system that has made us the wealthiest people on the planet.

And, yet, the sales tax isn't 24%, as is falsely claimed in the title.

    https://www.cdtfa.ca.gov/DataPortal/map.htm?url=SalesTaxRates

The sales tax rates are between 7.25% and 10.5%, depending on location.

The excise tax was charged because the person most likely bought pot. I have no problem with this.

Also, if it was for the fair tax advocates (you know who they are), we'd all be paying exorbitant sales taxes, because they want to do away with the federal income tax.

in essence, this is more of the typical fear mongering of the anti-government types. Surprisingly, when one looks behind the curtain, many of them, including on this forum, are on SS and Medicare. Go figure.....
