And that is exactly correct. Ukraine would have fallen overnight had we not pumped hundreds of billions of dollars into their war machine. And Ukraine still isn't winning, even with the cash and weapons influx.

 

If it had "fallen overnight" those hundreds of billions would have been too late. Ukraine's performance in the war is related both to their unexpected resilience and the west's support.

 

Putin could have launched airstrike after airstrike, carpet bombing run after run, cruise missiles, you name it. Why he didn't do that immediately, I have no idea. All he had to do was launch everything he had at Kyiv and wipe it off the map right off the bat.

 

Well this is a war of conquest, not a war for security. The goal isn't to salt the earth as rome vs carthage, but to enhance Russian prosperity and power in the long term. At the same time, however, it's a war putin feels he cannot afford to lose, so ultimately he is willing to do quite a bit to both Ukraine and his own men to achieve his goals.
