Out of curiosity, what do you folks on the right have against using device-based age verification instead? Simpler, less economically wasteful, more universal, less intrusion from the government, fewer privacy concerns . . . why do you guys hate it? It's way more effective than waiting for Texas to sit there and sue every single porn website in existence, one by one, until they all comply, and doing it all over again every time a new one pops up.

If your concern is really about the kids, and not just trying a workaround to try to effectively outlaw material you don't like, then why don't you want a solution that is way cheaper, more secure, way more effective, harder to circumvent, and less intrusive?

Hell, if you guys are really just that desperate for the government to handle it instead, I'd be all for requiring all adult websites to provide resources for adults on how to do this. I'm also fine with the surgeon general-style warning that the law requires.

 

Um no like 99% of the porn I've ever viewed online was "free." Free as in they bombard you with ads and try to get you to pay to see the full video in some cases, but there's plenty of free stuff available in multiple places for just about any taste.

 

It wouldn't really be proof. A mildly deviant 13 year old could get a hold of their parents credit card. Really, proof would require something like a video of the person next to their ID reciting a randomly generated password... at some point that won't be proof anymore either if deepfakes become more easily made and at least as hard to detect.

 

Texas has always been a nanny state with ridiculous restrictions, like prohibiting the purchase of alcohol on Sundays.

 

So, let's get at least the facts correct. Pornhub themselves took an action. Those are the facts. Texas, as a state didn't do this, nor could they. So, if the provider denies you access, how is that a condition of the state of TX having made you less able to consume your porn? The fact is that it appears that Pornhub is punishing you because of where you live instead of attempting to comply with the regulations of a the state by offering a mechanism to verify your age. And yes, you mischaracterized what I wrote, I suggested that democrats will use interstate commerce to attack the State of TX. I can see why you were confused.

 

They responded to the state's action, and anyone else Texas sues is going to have to do the same. None of these sites are going to be able to afford this overhead. And, no, I didn't mischaracterize what you said. You said IDs were required for interstate commerce. They are not. There is a much better solution. But the GOP doesn't want to hear it, because this was never about protecting kids.

 

At least you can buy alcohol after 10am now. And there's no longer a restriction on the number of sex toys you can own. So . . . progress? At least until stuff like this started happening again.
