The House Energy and Commerce Committee unanimously advanced a bill Thursday that would require TikTok’s China-based parent company ByteDance to divest the app or face a U.S. ban. The “Protecting Americans From Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act,” advanced out of committee with overwhelming bipartisan support just two days after it was introduced by Reps. We'll have a new generation of teenagers that hate Washington. It's hard to believe that our lawmakers are this stupid. While the Congressmen are really aiming to get ByteDance to divest TikTok, it's not clear what the company will do. If they divest, it would probably be only the US operation and not the global operation headquartered in Singapore.
They hate Washington because of TikTok? Is it based upon actual actions that China has done, or just a theoretical security risk? If they want to track Americans, couldn't they already do it with their hackers? Or perhaps they could, but less reliably? I should ask the cybersecurity guy in my family about all of this, but maybe somebody here has the expertise.
It’s interesting because TikTok has installed more protective measures for user data than Meta or Google yet they are being given a blanket exemption Congress is trying to say it has nothing to do with TikTok but the initial draft was leaked and the it appeared in the file name. Sad how so many in government love to ban information
They'll get over it in the couple of days it takes for something to replace it. Tiktok was the replacement for vines. And they'll be glad when China can't store more data.
It's owned by a Chinese company that has ties to a Chinese government that's engaging in genocide which it denies so don't trust. Only when it's being gathered by Chinese communists.
If the Republicans do this, they've lost the election in 2024. Kids who wouldn't otherwise have had the attention span to handle a complex task like voting will suddenly be motivated to pause living their best life and speaking their truth and head out to the polls to punish the bad men who took away their bathroom entertainment.

I voted Democratic in every U.S. Primary and General Election since Jimmy Carter. My last vote was for Biden in 2020. I will never vote for a Democrat again because they always end up reinforcing Republican antidemocratic fascist policies--and with pride. But yet, Biden can't do X because of Joe Manchine, or he can't do Y because of Kyrsten Sinema, or Biden can't pass Z because of the filibuster, or Biden can't stop the genocidal war against Palestinian children because of Netanyahu---but Biden CAN censor the media to spread more fascist lies and suppress the free exchange of information. It's disgusting. With the current Democratic president and senate, one would think they would work to reverse the fascist policies of the George W. Bush Administration known as the USA Patriot Act, which was signed into law by President Bush on October 26, 2001. The USA Patriot Act allowed the US Government to produce and broadcast political propaganda and disinformation directed at and against the American public. But instead of reversing these fascist laws, Biden (and the entire proto-fascist Democratic Party) is building on the fascist USA Patriot Act. What is important to remember is the Patriot Act made disinformation directed at Americans LEGAL. The “Voice of America” broadcasts that were directed at the Nazis in WWII was by policy not allowed to distribute disinformation even against the Nazis during war time, but now the Patriot Act allows the feeding disinformation to its own population. The Americans are financing their own demise. The Patriot Act allowed the Bush Administration to disseminate propaganda when The Department of Education paid commentator Armstrong Williams to promote the No Child Left Behind Act. The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) hired Maggie Gallagher to advocate for its “marriage initiative”. In another case, columnist Maggie Gallagher was also paid for government propaganda: In yet in another case, religious right-wing fascists got into the act: The administration also produced pseudo-news videos that were disseminated nationally to local TV stations to promote its other fascist policies. Washington D.C. has banned Russia Today, and wants to ban TikTok, but not but the Nazi Rupert Murdoch's Fox News even though he was enabled fascist movements in Britian, Australia, and the United States. Murdoch (Moloch) has merged and synchronized the Wall Street Socialists with the entire American communications network. He has actually hacked the phones of American "celebrities, royalty, and public citizens" without any real consequences to his world empire.
