That is a very helpful suggestion - I'll look into putting something together with input from the other advisors/mods.

We already have one, the Updated FAQ. We could always add to it, though. It has info about the rep and credit system, and how to report posts, etc.

    Stickey, Mak et al;

"No flame-bait threads. Threads where the sole intent (either by topic, title, images or language) is to elicit emotionally charged responses or personal attacks from others will be deleted. This especially goes for any form of hate speech. It is up to the moderators' discretion to determine whether or not a given post falls into a particular category."

I appreciate there is a fine line between someone expressing an opinion or the above.

I am personally aware of a poster called Lasher who on another forum regularly engaged in the above because there was no such a rule and now I fear he is here doing the same thing.

I admit I do not have the logical, dettached, objective perspective as a moderator because its directed at Jews and I am one.

I know moderators sometimes will warn or ban people when they go too far. Me personally I do not want to ask for anyone to be censored needlessly simply because they make me uncomfortable. I would hate that to happen as I believe freedom of speech is more important then my personal feelings/

Part of me just wants to ignore some of his comments, but I feel it is dangerous to say silent when certain people say hateful things so Ichallenge them but I do not want to flame back either and ruin the purpose of this forum.

Any advise on resonding to flames I would appreciate. I know we are not to personally insult one another. I get that. I am not sure though if responding to someone by suggesting to them they are being a flamer is in itself an insult or not. Know what I mean?

Maybe there is no clear answer but any suggestions I would appreciate.

    Thanks.

Yes. Calling someone a flamer is a personal attack. The truth is no defense. The forum is for sharing and debating. Calling someone a name is an ad hominem and does not make your point or prove them wrong. Often, ad hominems serve to show that the person using them does not have a better argument.

Remember, something is not automatically flamebait simply because it makes you mad.

The word bigot, bigotry, bigoted should be censored. It's way overused! :bump:

Even though it is a form of prejudice or a differing opinon, if used in a sentence against a poster, it is wrong. I think I would be warned or edited if I came out and said, "You are a bigot and a hypocrite".

This is a debate forum and we all have different opinions, right? That's why we should civilly discuss our opposition in a manner as not to insult others.

It can be done. Like I have heard Southpaw say, read your post before you hit the submit button. It sure takes discipline at times. I would prefer a clean slate than have to deal with an infraction history.

If people are going to cut and paste articles they should at least comment on the article and not simply post it.

Agreed. The OP is expected to comment, not sure about those who come in, mid thread and post an article.

Any time you post an article you should comment on it. Otherwise we will have cut and paste wars.

Are links to other forums (not mine) discouraged?

We do not allow threads made solely for that purpose. If it is a decent site, you may put a link in your signature. No spam or porn type links.

if it is not clear then we should review it , in my opinion no member should just cut and paste without a link and some commentary

As you may know, I am involved mostly in GW threads. I know of a forum that has a GW thread that only allows the discussion of the science, ie only peer-reviewed papers; no blogs, no newspapers, no opinion pieces. I would like to direct any poster that is interested in the science of GW to that forum, not in my signature, but in a response.

A safe way to do that would be to quote information from that site in your response to a thread here. Then you're required to have a link.

It would be preferred to refer to them as "sexual paraphenalia" or "sex toys" and provide a link to them in the post with an "Adult Content" warning. Aways remember that we have minors on this forum and the Forum Rules and Guidelines prohibit sexually oriented language because of that.

A little common sense goes a long ways.

After posting a Comment, when someone post to the thread afterwards, I'll get an email. I have been on Message Boards in the past where the Commenter would only get an email if the additional comments were about these specific comment, not based on comments to the general Thread.

However, under this system I get email notifications about a posting to a thread I commented on, but the notification is no where near my comment,or the original thread, so I can't even make any type of comparison. I know the System is just dispursing it as it comes in with everything else.

The ideal email notification is when a poster is notified specifically about his/her specific comment, not notified about posters to a Thread. I usually respond to those that respond to what I said on a particular subject in relations to automatic email notitication. I rarely comment on someone else's comment on a Thread Title, since I don't claim to know what others are talking about or thinking about when they make postings.

When entering a post if you scroll down there is a selection box for subscriptions and email notifications related to the thread. You can select no email notification if you choose to.

leart, what you do is this:

    Go to your UserCP.
    Click 'edit options'
Scroll down to the options for email notification.
    Select 'no email notification'.
    Save changes.

When you post in a thread, if you wish to be informed as to anymore posts, scroll down and select 'subscribe'.
You may not get any email notification, but when you return, go to your UserCP again and you'll see your subscribed threads listed.

There is no way to only be notified when someone replies to your post - ONLY when someone else replies to the thread.

Politicalforum uses a linear thread style. The type of notification you're looking for is only possible in forums which use the threaded style for threads, like DemocraticUnderground or Reddit. Unfortunately the only option is to either get an email for every reply to the thread, or to get no email responses.

The last sentence of your comment, which indicates that your System don't allow for email responses to specific Comments within a Thread. Thank you.
