go to both kinds of drive-ins, in a convertible. :sun:

stop in Amarillo, TX, and take the 72oz steak dinner challenge. <----The Big Texan has a horse hotel too. i don't think they're related enterprises. :confuse:

The Cross Bronx is a disaster at any time of day. They should rename it the Cross Bronx parking lot. Some days the Belt Parkway isn't much better.

The US is an awfully big place. Most Americans never see even a significant part of it. I've never been to New York (except to catch a connecting flight), for example.

Washington, DC is an interesting place to visit if she hasn't. You can spend days in the Smithsonian easily. For a truly bizarre experience, try taking AMTRAK from somewhere in the southeast up to DC.

A trip down the blue ridge parkway is also interesting. The appalachians are very old mountains, and of a profoundly different character from newer mountain ranges like the rockies.

There's actually quite a lot of stuff to do in Atlanta, depending on the time of year. The Georgia Aquarium is probably the most significant attraction, there's also a six flags there. If she's a baseball fan, she can go watch the braves lose some games. There is probably an art festival going on in the area on any given weekend in the fall (though that can sometimes require a significant drive--1-2 hours). There's an excellent art museum (though not on par with some others she'd probably have seen if she was into art and went through New York). There's the Coca-Cola museum, which interests some people, but I confess I've never been. I think you can also get a tour of CNN's studio in Atlanta, another thing I've heard about but never done. Not to mention it's easy to get to a lot of other places from Atlanta, if she's exploring the southeast. She could take a turn northward and go rafting on any number of rivers in the area where Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee, and North Carolina meet--that's only three or four hours by car from Atlanta. In the same vein, a visit to Charleston and Savannah can also be interesting, for cities of an entirely different flavor. If she likes beaches, there are many white sand beaches there (on the coast near the Georgia/South Carolina border) that are less crowded and more natural than some of the developed beaches in Florida she might otherwise visit.

There's also, of course, plenty of good restaurants and other attractions that any large city has.

Like what? I'm genuinely interested. I've driven through Atlanta dozens of times and never felt the need to stop for anything other than lunch. Quite frankly, if I just had to go on vacation in Georgia, I'd rather go to Savannah.

I edited my response to include some examples. The Georgia Aquarium is certainly worth a visit if you're there.

Yeah, just looked into the Aquarium. It does look pretty cool but I think I'd rather just go to Sea World. They have everything that the GA Aquarium has plus a whole lot more and they're close to tons of other fun stuff.

The US is HUGE. But inspite of worthy places in every corner of the country, there are must see places:

    Must See Cities:
New York, Boston, Washington DC, Miami, San Francisco, Los Angeles

    National Parks:
Grand Canyon, Yosemite, Redwoods State Park/Sequioa National Forest, Glacier National Park, Yellowstone

The areas around each of those above noted cities offers countless things to see and do, and will be representative of the US. Foreigners are dazzled by NYC, but honestly, a few days there and you will have seen everything unique. The rest can be found in any city in the world.

The National Parks EACH will take days and days to see. They are SPECTACULAR, and one would likely not see scenery like that anywhere else. Redwoods State Park has trees 360+ ft tall, 3,000 years old!!

    Take your pick and enjoy.

I dunno if I'd want to go to Yellowstone anymore, I read in the paper the other day that some guy got eaten by a bear! The park might be beautiful to visit, but I don't want to get eaten...:omg:

If she's planning on Las Vegas, send me a PM. I'll get her free tickets to one of the shows (we get tons of stuff free).
The San Diego Zoo is great but the Wild Animal Park is better - they run around free. Just have her go super early / late because during the day, they're usually sleeping (Most are from Africa).
I have clients who are partners at NY Law firms (I own a legal recruiting firm) and may be able to get her something there if she's going to be there a while. The biggest problem with them, is they're always so hard to reach. I also have friends in an area called The Hamptons which is an area that she might find interesting.
Let me know if she goes to DC. Lots of friend on The Hill and familiarity with The District.
If you come, let me know!

    Cheers!

Went to Yellowstone as a kid....never got eaten.

That is why you do not feed the bears...if you follow the Park Rangers advice you will be safe...You just can't miss Old Faithfull, the Yellowstone Canyon, the boiling mud pits, the hot springs, the treeline, and the Yellowstone Lodge.

But go in the summer...the winters are brutal.

You got it all right except the part about the winter. the park is now closed the first weekend of November (or if there is to much snow ) for the winter.

What is Old Faithful? And do you swim in the mud pits and the hot springs? How is the water in them hot?

And as for not feeding the bears, you mean you can actually SEE them walking around?

lol Are there no natural predators in Australia? Yes, if you go out into the wilderness then you can actually see wildlife. The last time I went to the Smoky Mountains, we ran across a black bear. Bears aren't exactly the most nimble of creatures. I heard it long before I saw it. If you keep your wits about you and don't snuggle them like a Teddy bear or go screaming while running aimlessly through the woods, then chances are you have nothing to worry about.

If you see a bear, just go quietly and calmly in the other direction, and yes, do not feed the bears. You may think that you are being kind to the bear but you are practically signing that bear's death warrant. The park ranger at the Smokys told us that the year before a guy decided to feed and play with a bear on the same trail we saw our bear on and it wound up mauling his leg. Once that happens they have to track down the bear and put it down. The jackass was also charged with a crime since it is illegal to approach a bear inside the park.

Another time in the Smokys we saw some cars pulled over along a narrow road going through the woods. Some people had spotted a bear cub and had gotten out and treed the little guy. --Dumbest. Thing. You. Can. Possibly. Do.-- As we drove on I just yelled out two simple pieces of advice:

    1. "Baby bears do not exist by themselves."

    2. "Ya'll are about to be lunch."

We have our natural predators in Australia but they tend to be spiders and snakes, which are rare in most parts.
I think I'd freak out if I saw a bear. Although feeding it would be ridiculous and the wrong thing to do, as you would probably encourage more bears!

You can still go to the national parks. Just stick to the main trails and stay with groups of people and you'll be fine. People usually only run into bears when they go hiking on back trails or go romping through the woods. When I saw that black bear, I was on a 2 mile long trail going up a mountain that had some obscure waterfall at the end. If you stick to the main "attractions" you probably won't run across any predators.

Quite frankly, when I go into the woods I'm more worried about snakes than I am bears. Bears, you can see coming, you don't know a snake is there until you are practically right up on it.
