President Dwight D. Eisenhower: "Those Communists May Be right"

Nothing, not even communism, seemed to obsess Eisenhower as much as his fear that capitalists would ruin their system by spending too much on defense. A sometime reader of Marx and Lenin, the president warned that those communists might be correct: capitalists were too "selfish", too willing to spend and profit now at the cost of "long-term" interest and thus "in the long run would destroy any free economic system."

Excellent analysis from the man who termed the "military industrial complex." This is directly tied to current events as the government and corporations care more about killing innocent people in other countries than about programs of social uplift.

 

I wouldn't say he feared Capitalism but rather he feared Corporatism.

 

Communism has murdered more human beings than any other force in the history of mankind. It is an abomination.

Communism does not kill, it is the people who corrupt it that do.

Communism is a corruption. If you read Marx and Lenin it becomes abundantly clear why it can only exist in a totalitarian state. In its inception, in every instance, it was no more than a shift in who are the "haves" and who gets killed for having been a "have."

Let us not forget that the Red Army systematically assassinated the entire Russian Royal family even through to cousins seven times removed along with their friends and relatives. The "rich" were sent to concentration camps to starve to death.

In all of its existence, in all cases, the "party" hierarchy are the first to be fed, have homes and heat while those not drinking the Kool-aid go without.

 

I heard someone the other day on the news comment that unbridled capitalism becomes mafiaism. I think that's the point that Eisenhower may have been making.

This is the man that commanded our European forces in WW2. He saw first hand just what war can do. He should be listened to. It's not an argument about capitalism vs communism. It's an argument about keeping greed in check due to how it drives our foreign policy.

Eisenhower was a good president. He spent billions on the interstate highway system which was critical to modernizing our postwar economy. His speech on the military industrial complex was one of the great rhetorical admonitions to protect our democracy from corporatism and warmongering in the history of this nation.

This is exactly the kind of thing the **********s reject.

Eisenhower would be called a socialist by the baggers, if they even knew who he was.

The GOP is even out of touch with its own history.
