Why is it not plausible to think if something can be changed at the local level that it can't at the federal levels? What makes you think people in power can't at some point say "they're already voting in every other kind of election so why not".

at a certain point, they will make up more and more of the country. you can't just tell that large a group of people your opinion doesn't matter. Large groups of people matter, after all, it was YOU PEOPLE that implied that a tiny group of red necks in cosplay outfits could actually overturn an election so don't pretend you don't believe its possible.
The left can find many ways to do this.
