    24 hrs bus lanes- the silver bullet to Singapore's social, economic, existential problems.


    At 3 am at night, cyclist can use, so can PMD (needs license, minimum height threshold, helmet, 25kph speed limit, 20kg weight limit etc).

    Bus operational hours, must cycle single file.

    Nobody can complain that public transportation is bad or cars are expensive. PMD will stop complaining about 10kph footpath limit, pedestrians will stop complaining about PMD speeding and endangering pedestrians.

    Nobody can complain that diabetes is expensive to treat because exercise (anti-diabetes lifestyle) and transportation are both very accessable if not totally free.

    Even GST increase can be indefinitely postponed/ cancelled if people become fit and the environment more green (LHL said that GST needed to be increased to pay for healthcare costs for older Singaporeans (see bottom ref)).

    People can move around 24/7 means economy will improve. More jobs for all in 24/7 economy. Traffic jams will be reduced since more people can travel 24/7 vz PMD, meaning that the economy can be almost 2X expanded since people can now work 24/7 rather than only being limited to office hours. More people can work during night time hours doing deliveries, logistics, repairs, leisure activities/ work etc shifting such forms of work to graveyard shift hours will free up roads for more vital uses (meetings, conventions etc) during office (day light) hours. Traffic jams can be alleviated with the optimisation of road use.

    Less forex loss buying fossil fuels and overpriced patented diabetes medicines because Singaporeans become fit (non-T2 diabetic) and don't need fossil fuels to cycle to work if they opt to.

    Police can respond to terrorist attacks quickly by using bus/PMD shared lanes instead of getting caught in traffic jam (Little India Riot case) and arrive on scene late.

    Use of road will be optimised with rules to ensure that cyclist are not endangered when cycling on the road e.g.
    [YOUTUBE]TU_nYvZu7ns[/youtube] where road was totally empty but still taxi driver knocked cyclist down. Bus lanes will provide proper demarcation and avoid cyclist and motorist accidents since bus lanes are reserved lanes and have slower speed limits based on the usual user's profile.

    In case of terrorist attack on MRT/public transportation, society will still operate as usual. More people will use PMD and bicycle to get to work whilst public transportation is getting fixed with the established bicycle use infrastructure: this means that the economy can still run even if public transportation is wiped out in a terrorist attack: this makes the Singapore society and economy very resilient.

    Silver bullet to all our problems, no?

    Sounds good, but it would just be impractical. The space that would be required for those lanes would not be justified for only having buses and emergency vehicles use them.

    If you want to cut down traffic, the economical approach would be to auction off driving permits to the highest bidders, and then reduce taxes accordingly for the lowest income people. You could reduce the traffic down to a level where buses would be mostly unencumbered.

    I think more people would be willing to use the bus if there were fewer cars on the road also, since it is unpleasant to wait besides a street with many cars (noise, air pollution).
